Showcasing Rathbone as potential trade bait this summer?

Potentially, but probably not the case. In any event, if the Canucks were looking to showcase Rathbone, then I would prefer that they did it over most/all of a full NHL season.

His offense has been insane in Abbotsford. Really hoping Quinn can show him what decent defense at the NHL looks like for a small defenseman.

What, is Hughes going to show Rathbone some old videos of how Pat Stapleton played?

  3. This is perhaps a bit late for the "official" season change...

Hmm, someone with Youtube doesn't believe in Spring. Let's try this:

  4. I have to admit that in the last while I have not paid much attention to hockey (in general), and HNiC in particular. I have been spending more time watching baseball, and the play-by-play and colour commentators are pretty much a delight to listen to, regardless of the team which employs them.

Case in point, a few nights ago, I was watching a 9 inning game which was already over by the bottom of the 5th, with the home team stomping the visitors. The home team guys calling the game were doing anything to try to keep fan interest, ears and eyes on the game. By the top of 7th inning they were discussing the best freeway route for driving to get to the stadium for the following day's away game.

Once a particular route was agreed upon (factors considered: time, possible traffic congestion, etc), the conversation then evolved into what kind of food do you want to get for lunch while en route? One guy wanted a burger, while the other guy wanted chili, and neither could agree that the other guy's restaurant of choice could properly make what that guy wanted to eat.

The conversation then became a further discussion of economy of time/distance; if you started from the same point, and travelled to each of the restaurants, which would allow you to get to the ballpark in time for the game? One location permitted a direct route to the park, while the other required a certain amount of back-tracking, so by the bottom of the 8th, it was finally decided that they were going to get burgers....

    Glorious.

So basically he didn’t gain any value here. I don’t believe that.

Couldnt we have at least gotten some boom or bust prospect from them? I’d prefer that over a fourth. Get Gradin to pick one of their Swedish prospects!

Can't say that I disagree with any of this. There is a let's see if we can salvage something out of the Miller trade deal after it fell apart. The Rangers couldn't accept the Canucks' demands for Miller (and a package which included Motte), but just as they were about to hang up, someone said, "What about just for Motte?"

The only thing that makes sense to me is that the team had no intention of re-signing Motte (for some reason). As he was a pending UFA, they got a 4th. I still think he was worth more.

But hey, it's BASEBALL season just around the corner. GO GIANTS!!, Best wishes to you Jays fans, and for you Yankees and Dodgers fans.....................

Allvin to speak to media at 1:30... I bet you he's gonna say the expected...  That he didn't get any incredible offers and the team still got a shot at playoffs!!

Well, what if Miller were "given away" by the equivalent level of bad deal? Rather than the 1st and multiple high end prospects which we were all hearing here, maybe the best offer was a 1st and one B prospect, who plays in a position which the Canucks don't really have a need?

It would indeed be interesting to be a fly on the wall...

    Wow a 2022 4th isn’t enough, a 2023 4th? The chances a 4th comes any where close to motte’s value is extremely slim.

In case it hasn't already been pointed out (and I can't be arsed to read through the entire thread), the irony of this is that Motte was selected in the 4th round.

He's only a few years removed from logging nearly 20 minutes a night on average with is. Being stuck behind Seider and Hronek limited his minutes in Detroit, which is obviously understandable, but the fact remains that he ate big minutes for us, and played solidly while doing so not long ago.

    Or are you disputing that?

The fact also remains that we just coughed up a 3rd round pick for a bottom pairing Dman when LA only gave up a 7th for a player that eats more minutes and has a better pedigree.

I'm not disputing anything about the minutes Stecher played here, in the past. I'm not disputing that Stecher played behind Seider and Hronek in Detroit. I can't rightly say that these mean anything to the Canucks' current situation. Two years ago, Stecher became expendable to the Canucks because he fell down their depth chart, so he left as a UFA to Detroit. He is currently a pending UFA (again), and he was just moved in a trade for a 7th.

Two different teams have set the current value of Stecher as a 7th, which is a bit better than being released on waivers, or just not re-signed (I guess).

    He played 2RD often here.

    Here. Then.

He (likely) played a lot of games at 2RD for Detroit. Detroit let him go because they could get a 7th for him, rather than put him on waivers, and maybe put him in the AHL or perhaps lose him for nothing. Maybe the Canucks will sign him as a UFA in the off season.

Doesn't matter what the reason was. He played in a top 4 role for us often, hence why I said he CAN play in the top, not that he should. Hell, prime Stetcher would be a top 4 on a current blueline considering how absolutely dog$&!# our right side is.

He put in some hard minutes for us, often played 20+ minutes a night, and had solid underlying numbers to boot. The amount of disrespect he gets around here because "lol smal" is absolutely baffling, and a complete rejection of the reality of how solid he was for us.

Could then does equal can now. Detroit who, last I heard, were a challenged team on defense this season, let Stecher go for a 7th.

Evidently the 3rd went to TO for Dermot, so we basically exchanged Harmonic for Dermot.

Yeah, I'm catching up. I just woke up from a nap and am (mostly) watching the Giants game.

So, aside from an age gain (Dermott is younger) and some cap space, it remains to be seen how this will turn out.

  12. Haven't checked to see if anyone else has noted this, but, with the Canucks regaining their 3rd for this year they would have been able to offer sheet another team's RFA asset, in the $4 - 6 million range (approx) and be able to supply the 1st and 3rd picks as compensation.

                                               regards,  G.
