Thanks guys for bringing back the hope, and talking me down from the ledge. Great game, keep em coming!

Damn do I love Kuz's smile!

Yeah, a lot of warmth there.  It will be great when his English is better and he can joke around a bit because there's pretty clearly a sense of humour waiting to come out.  The guy is living the dream and brings a really positive vibe to the team, which is a big part of what's needed to avoid streaks like we just went through.

    Did I miss something?

Did the family quit cutting cheques?

Are any of you old enough to remember when the team almost left town?

When good people had to sell because they couldn't afford the losses?

I do.  (And I know some of you old timers remember too.)

I once talked to Brian Burke after he spoke at a luncheon.

One of the things talked about was how close it came.

Perhaps you remember his interview on TV, when he said something like, 'it was a phone call away'.

The Aquilini family has always supported the Canucks and for that, as a Canuck fan, I am grateful.

I'm a fan of a hockey team; to me, like Ken Kesey said, "You're either on the bus, or off the bus."

  3. I don't know what is or is not going on in the dressing room, but these reports are contradictory.  On the one hand there's the "country club" comments from Kypreos which suggest no real leadership.  Then there are the, Bo vs. JT, reports that suggest contending leadership groups.  So either there's no leadership or an excess of it, take your pick.  Maybe the "cliques" comment is part of the Bo vs. JT bs or maybe it's a separate "issue" like who hangs out with who in free time, as if things like nationality, being married or not, etc. aren't going to affect that.  Sounds like really toxic stuff to me [not].

  4. That loss was a choke-job of historic proportions.  The only thing comparable in team history was blowing an 8 game division lead in September 1987.  With that said, there was a lot of luck in Seattle's victory:  bloop hits all over the place and at the worst times.  But a character team would have found a way to stop the bleeding.  Hopefully this is a wake-up call that gets this core to take a long look in the mirror.

There clearly is a problem with the "fun" culture on the team and their inability to execute fundamentals.  That's why they consistently lose to less talented teams that play the right way.  A hard-ass old school manager is part of the cure for that.  But there also has to be some older players who can smarten Bo and Vladdy up.  Chapman is a step in that direction but they need more veteran leadership.

Wolanin looked pretty smooth moving the puck out of the D-zone and Burroughs adds some grit, while playing a simple, steady game.

In a game that had us hemmed into our zone just like the worst of the Green era, Wolanin really stood out for calm, efficient zone exits.  Since he wasn't playing with anyone higher-end than Schenn, and the puck support from the forwards was pretty spotty all night, I think he deserves credit for what we saw.  He was solid in his exits when he played on a really bad team in Ottawa too.  This is the main thing we need from our non-elite D.  How does he stand in the pecking order?  A bit below Dermott but close would be my guess.  Rathbone has a higher ceiling but still needs more pro reps to get a reliable floor to his game:  his decision making was poor on a number of occasions last night.

This is why I'm optimistic about our team becoming a contender over the next couple years. I mean ideally, we'd have something like our own "McAvoy" magically show up as a legit #1D on the right, but we can still be a very good, contending team, even if we can find a younger guy like Tanev/Pesce etc. Those guys, while certainly not "easy" are definitely not as hard to find...and bonus, they also don't cost as much cap $$!!

Yeah, we need to find a "Pesce/Tanev" type and maybe a younger "Manson/Mayfield" sort and we'd pretty good. And yes, I have to think we package one of Boser/Garland  + maybe a guy like Rathbone or Hoglander for  someone like that.

Very much agreed.  Leading up to when Myers goes, we basically need to find one and then another solid but not spectacular RD and we are a contender.  The acquisition cost you suggest seems reasonable, and I'd pay it in a heartbeat.  Personally, I'd like to keep Rathbone over any of those wingers because he looks like a good succession plan for OEL, but it all depends on what it takes to get the right deal done.

no they're sure not easy to get.

I'm kind of expecting, or at least wouldn't be surprised, to see us burn a late pick and/or prospect to clear some cap space to bring in DeHaan before camp starts, now that JT is locked down and Bo likely soon to follow.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to see that either but maybe some papering-down of ELCs and waiving of Dickinson would be enough to cover DeHaan.  Longer term, I can't remember a time when RD, any RD, were so in-demand as they are now.  Hopefully we get some nice internal surprises, maybe starting with Keeper and Juulsen.

Bruce absolutely does need to try Hughes-OEL. If it works, it raises the further question of who takes over the shutdown role that OEL-Myers had last year, but maybe DeHaan can help there. No question that we need one (and before long two) stay-at-home RD with good physicality and enough mobility to play with any of our puck-moving LD but there are work-arounds like Hughes-OEL that would allow us to get by meanwhile.   For me, the silver lining is that we don't need elite RD to make our pairings work, just some solid defensive guys that should come cheaper.  But as we're finding out, even they aren't easy to acquire.

I really wished this thread was just an extension of the last Miller thread.  We'd be well on our way to 2000 by now.  Moderators, can this not have happened?  Isn't a legendary thread a good thing?!!!

I was hoping it would be different, and it was for a while but seems to have reverted to the same head-butting.

not sure this is true - we may have good players for the right side, just not right shots.

Hughes-OEL is a really interesting thing to try. If it works that really helps us as we can put together a workable bottom two pairs particularly if we get DeHaan on board.

Yes and no.... 1200 pages about that...

Yes the problem is still the same, and it was either keep Miller and hope he matures well, or take the scraps as you suggests.

I've been the fence the whole time, and am just happy its sorted.

But for the folks that saw Millers future elsewhere, it was about A: whether he matures well, and B: What do we have that can help us get a RHD...

And those were legit questions and still are...  However leaving it all in a limbo, would have been the worst going into the season. All the talk about TDL trades etc. could have destroyed confidence amongst the remain part of the team, and possibly also swayed Horvats hand towards leaving.

Regardless that's all irrelevant now, but I think some people here is alienating some of the fans for having a different view of going forward.

Don't get fooled by JR/PA saying they were always going to sign Miller... but lets just be glad they did. If they had gotten a good deal involving Dobson or the likes, its not a foregone conclusion Miller would have been a Canuck now. They didn't, and he is, and I for one am looking towards the future with happiness.

Could have gone either way for sure, and could have been a good thing either way depending ...  This is a good outcome, and probably the best one for maintaining team morale.  In the end, the only people who need to go on time out are the ones who were certain that he would never re-sign with us despite his many statements to the contrary during this saga.  They were flat out wrong and need to own it.
