The Official Transit Thread

It is an absolute gong show out there no matter what mode of normal transportation one takes. With the massive increase in bus passengers, buses are running late and leaving passengers behind at bus stops. Chartering a helicopter would be the fastest way to get across the Fraser River.

Maybe BC Ferries should lend translink a boat during this time as the Albion ferry has a small capacity.

It is definitely chaos for translink and riders are not happy the way this is being dealt with.

Cause they cant guarantee a scheduled arrival and departure times for the bus routes.

The 351, 601 and other buses that use highway 99 and the Massey tunnel are not guaranteed a scheduled arrival\departure times. The Port Mann should be used during this traffic nightmare.

the 300s and 600s suburban buses are sometimes off by a bit; however, they have the luxury of using the HOV lane on 99 southbound after Westminster Hwy, as well as 99 northbound all the way until the mouth of the tunnel.

Port Mann does not have the luxury of providing a useful HOV/BOV lane for buses. As well, considering the nightmares commuters and auto drivers are facing on Hwy 1, it's even more reason to NOT put buses onto the Port Mann. Putting buses on the bridge only causes valuable resources (bus, driver) to be wasted as they sit in gridlock.

I'm sure using a huge vessel in a river will turn out well...

Give them a super ferry and people could just drive like bridge over.

Well a gulf island ferry would probably be bigger then the current Albion one.

Also, why wasn't the pattulo bridge replaced when the Skybridge was built for the skytrain? A combined skytrain/road bridge would probably be more economical in the long run.

That takes intelligence have you ever seen translink execute a smart move?

SkyTrain Millennium Line Extension to UBC

milleniumlinewest1qh6.jpg

Starting with the last stops on the existing intersection of the Expo and existing Millennium Line:

broadwaycommercialyk7.jpg

Prince Edward Street Station will be a FUTURE STATION as there is nothing there right now, but will soon become part of a high-density technology zone and satellite post-secondary campus for UBC, SFU, BCIT, and Emily Carr in the False Creek Flats. From VCC-clark it continues as elevated guideway and drops to grade just before Prince Edward Station and cuts into the hillside as cut-and-cover tunnel.

princeedwardstationav5.jpg

Kingsway Station to have three station entrances located on: Main, Kingsway, and Broadway. The tunnel will arrive at the station in a stacked configuration underneath 10th Ave.

The expected interchange station with the Canada Line at Cambie.

The stacked cut-and-cover configuration continues under 10th all the way to Alma, before switching to bored tunnel to handle the typography and to save the commercial strip around Sasamat. Station entrances are located on Broadway.

Right after Blanca, the tunnel switches to side by side configuration and opens up to a trench down the middle of University Blvd.

sasamateu6.jpg

The track becomes elevated once more, giving the most scenic views from any urban mass transit system in the world. Part of the rationalle is to allow for some chance of restoring a continuity between ecosystems north and south of University Blvd.

westbrookza1.jpg

Before reaching the UBC Point Grey campus and neighbourhood, the track drops into a trench and runs down the median of University Blvd., with stations just before Westbrook Mall and just after Main Mall.

Hope you enjoyed your ride!

Travel time from VCC to UBC: 20 minutes.

Funny, it looks as though the line ends in the bookstore parking lot. The bookstore apparently bitched and moaned about the possibility of losing that lot to the proposed bus depot there. Instead it's going underground on the other side of main mall (and it's poorly designed at that).

^ What's the latest timeline on the project?

Officially, 2020. But there are some mild rumours that the BC Liberals want to ram it through much earlier than planned and have it done by 2014.

Construction can and will likely begin on the Evergreen Line some time this year, most likely during the summer. And as for the UBC and Surrey extensions, there are studies being made right now and will include preliminary design - which will take 1-2 years. Construction on UBC and Surrey could begin in late-2010 or 2011. Not sure where the money is coming from though...

lol they better be putting turnstyles in and have on-site security otherwise those west-side residents will be up in arms with all the hobos infesting their neighborhood.

I can assure you that fare gates and smart cards will be system wide within the next 6 years.
