[Game(?)] Team Frame/Outline Heading Into Next Year

Recommended Posts

Another armchair GM posting, nothing out of the blue. Wanted to make a thread a bit different from others just outlining what we have and what we don't, allowing to assess and discuss who would fit in and who wouldn't.

As of now from an unbiased point of view, it's safe to say that Malhotra, Booth, Roy, Barker, and Vandermeer won't be with the Canucks organization next year. Ballard, Edler, Raymond, and Higgins all have a cloudy uncertainty whether they will be with the team or not. Luongo/Shcneider is the big question mark though and from speculation, it seems Luongo will be the odd man out but you never know because Schneider can get more value in return and it'd make sense to keep Lu if the team were to go for another Cup run - Lu gives the better chances than Schneider of going further hands down but then again, Luongo is the likely goalie to be gone but there's too many question marks to make anything certain from the goalie view of things.

Current Roster:

Sedin - Sedin - Burrows

Booth - Kesler - Higgins

Raymond - Roy - Kassian

Sestito - Lapierre - Hansen

Schroeder, Jensen, Gaunce, Weise, Pinizzotto, Malhotra

Hamhuis - Bieksa

Edler - Garrison

Ballard - Tanev

Alberts, Corrado, Vandermeer, Barker

Luongo

Schneider

Lack, Cannata

* Red = Gone, Blue = 50/50 Chance, Green = The Unknown *

Now taking the legend above into perspective, we have 4 top 9 players, 4 bottom 6 players, 2 top 4 dmen, 2 depth dmen, and 1 goalie who all have chances of not being with the club next year. That's 13 roster players we can all expect to be gone.

Now, let's put in blanks for those players and see who we know we'll have for sure heading into next season:

Sedin - Sedin - Burrows

??? - Kesler - ???

??? - ??? - Kassian

??? - Lapierre - Hansen

???, Jensen, Gaunce, Weise, ???, ???

Hamhuis - Bieksa

??? - Garrison

??? - Tanev

Alberts, Corrado, ???, ???

Luongo/Schneider???

Lack

Cannata

As you can see from this analysis, the team looks terrible. Around 40% of our roster has a chance of being gone next year whether that is via no extension, trades, buyouts, or whatnot but the main point is again, approx. 40% of our roster has a chance of being gone and it's not that, but seeing how MG will be able to fill in those holes.

Just with that roster up top, the forward depth is horrible as we have 3 youngsters expected to fill in for injuries/you can't give that much pressure to youngsters except if they are willing to take it - if they feel they are roster players, than it is a different story. The defensive depth is horrible, and for goalie, the depth is horrible as well dependent on which goalie stays/if Lu, depth won't be a problem but if it's Schneider, we have a problem.

Now here's the game(?); being an armchair GM, using this analysis of the team, simply make reasonable moves to solidify the team and fix the missing spots while remaining under the cap. Take into account what MG has said of he wants younger guys in the lineup due to cap and that there will have to be a shakeup as keeping the same core guys for 5 years hasn't worked. I'll get things started off:

1.) Edler + 4th for Loui Eriksson

2.) 2013 1st, Schroeder, Higgins for Bobby Ryan

3.) Schneider, 2nd for Sean Couturier, 2013 1st

4.) Booth for Mark Fayne + Cond. 2014 3rd if Booth puts up 40+ points

5.) Ballard for NYI 3rd 2013

6.) Sign Hendricks 2 years, 1.25 mill per year. Sign Lapierre 2 years, $1.15 mill per year. Sign Weise 2 years, $700K per year. Sign Alberts 2 years, $1 mill per year.

23 Man Roster:

Sedin - Sedin - Eriksson (Swedish Connection)

Burrows - Kesler - Ryan (Agitate, Defend, Score)

Jensen - Couturier - Kassian (The Future)

Lapierre - Hendricks - Hansen (Shutdown + Offense)

Wesie...

Hamhuis - Bieksa (Go-to pair)

Garrison - Tanev (Garrison mentors Tanev)

Alberts - Corrado (Veteran presence + Corrado gets experience)

Fayne, Sauve...

Luongo (Take us to Glory)

Lack (Lu Mentors, just like how he did to Schneids)

Fits just under the cap max $64 million.

Have 2 first lines, an upcoming WCE line : P, and a 4th line that could top any teams 4th line in the NHL. 1st pair great, 2nd pair great, 3rd pair worked out great in playoffs so take it for what it's worth.

We shift from a defensive team to a scoring team thus why our defense looks a lot weaker from previous years but you got to give to get, and we give D for O. Playoff scoring woes jump out the window and this is obviously a team to go for the Cup plus it takes care of the future as we get Couturier, Philly's 2013 1st, Mark Fayne (young solid dman), and Lack gets mentored from Lu and will hopefully take over in some years when Lu's game starts declining.

...oh yea, and any coach other than that turd AV lol. No way would that 3rd line ever play if AV's coach
