Sens could take a big step back if they lose Batherson to suspension. And who do you see coming out to make room? Any of Boston, Tampa, Toronto, Florida, New York Rangers, Carolina or New Jersey missing would be a surprise. And the Isles improved last year with Horvat and Engvall additions. They're aging for sure but they're stacked on D with a stalwart in net. I do think Buffalo and Pittsburgh should be in this year, just hard to know who they're knocking out.

I can see any of Boston, Tampa, and Florida, missing out. Even the Rangers and Devils could be in tough. Boston is going to have to deal without Bergeron/Krejci, and Florida could struggle out of the gate again. TB has been less impressive in the regular season for several years now and I'm guessing the Isles for sure are not going to make it. It only takes a couple of over achieving teams and some key injuries to turn everything on it's head.

The last half decade or so I've found it really interesting to watch teams emerge that everyone kind of fades based on the last years standings. I'll say Florida and the Ilses are both on the outside looking in.

Yes.   A laser would be awesome.   QHs shots are great for tip ins.   Would be tough for opposing goalies have to guess and deal with what is coming next with two skilled defenseman manning the points.

Exactly. It would be a case of exponential reward to have that component. Teams having to respect that shot would have to give QH even more room to operate .... LETHAL!!! :metal:

And he's a RHD.   This was the guy I wanted more then QHs ... said I made a mistake and own it,  EDM didn't even have a jersey ready with his name, because they didn't think he'd go that late.    Dobson, QHs, Bouchard ... who's going to end up with the best career (Dahlin appears to finally getting to where he was supposed to be)?   Goals from the blue line is something we haven't had in what seems like forever.

Here's to hoping Hronek can deliver on that shot I've heard so much about. Man would it ever benefit QH to have a partner with a nice "Salo-like" clapper from the point.

The jackets will have a 20-25 point increase this season.

They're too deep too skilled and actually have a decent coach in Babs that works well with kids and vets

They have an insane wealth of assets to move for literally anything they want including numerous additional picks.  Not to mention a top 5 prospect pool for both depth and skill.

    This team will surprise

    Agreed

Agreed, but will they improve enough to make playoffs?

Maybe ... what a cop out lol

I think there's a good chance, they've got some good vets, I think it'll boil down to how their youth perform and whether Babcock can tighten things up

There is a good chance stuff will change in the East. Sabres, Sens, Jackets, Wings, Pens, and even the Caps looking to force their way into the playoffs.

Like Nico Hischier?  He was still given every opportunity to play aggressive and succeed.  These two Rangers, though... their confidence to control and dictate play has definitely been affected, especially with Lafrenière.  The problem here is that neither of them have developed their offensive game at all since going pro.  Even if you place those two players on a top line with... someone like Panarin, it'll take time for them to adjust to that style of play.  Even guys like Crosby and McDavid took a couple of years to become comfortable with the NHL's style of play before exploding offensively.

    It's a waste of talent.

Maybe. It seemed reasonable to me. They made the SCF doing it. The NHL is not a developmental league. I guess they could have put them in the AHL and filled the third line with cheap bums and then maybe they don't make the final, but I'm not going to argue. I don't have a problem with it.

they wouldn't be they certainly would be one of the very few 1st 2nd overall picks especially 1st overall to not be given extended chance on the top lines that matches their style to show what they can do. who was the last 1st overall pick to not be spoon fed top line mins/opportunity in the league the moment they play in the NHL? Slafkovsky? that guy have bust written everywhere.. i dont get the hype with this kid.. like he's playing in some finland league against men? but his stats doesn't even jump out.. my prediction with this guy he'll be nothing more than a 3rd liner or maybe he'll follow the way of yak

Probably Byfield in 2021. Hirschier 2017. When was the last time a team as good as the Rangers got to draft first and second overall? Whatever, they're shitty at development then. It's really not that important to me.

It’s hard to imagine him being more dedicated to defence. He did receive some votes for the Selke.

Team defence and winning sometimes means sacrificing point totals, or not focusing on beating your previous score. I can totally imagine a scenario where the team is better and Petey gets less points. 70% of the season they spent chasing games in garbage time. Petey said himself he is focusing on becoming better defensively just the other day in a press release.

  7. 1 hour ago, wai_lai416 said:

sure but by the time that happens they prolly missed out on the most critical part of their development time and never even come close 50% of their potential.. it's like they are trying to develop top end offensive talent into a grinder.

It's more like they were trying to win hockey games and integrate them into the team at the same time. I don't think that experience will necessarily hurt them. If they are truly gifted it will come to the surface eventually. They wouldn't be the first rookies to earn it the hard way.

so you are expecting Pettersson who's been playing with a carousel of wingers the last couple season and still set a career high in points while avg over 1.2 in his last 1.5 season to regress and can't even match his career high? okie

If the team starts playing real hockey it might affect his point totals. Especially if he's more dedicated to defence.

Brule is not even comparable in terms of skills and raw potential.. they rangers f up 2 player with very high potential by deploying and developing them poorly.. Laf and that habs like whatever his name was are one of the few cases where a 1st overall pick wasn't given any extended period of time in a top line all situation to see what they can or can't do.. if they had no plans of giving him a chance on the top line at the nhl level should have moved him to the AHL or just trade him instead of ruining a kid's confidence

It's not really the end of the world. These guys played in sheltered roles on good teams. They can and probably will break out when relied upon more. Whether with the Rangers or someone else.

Honestly, Martin will be fine unless he’s thrown into the starting job again. He was pretty good at first last season, keeping Canucks in games, but after a while it became too much for him.

Maybe, pretty much zero NHL track record of consistently performing well though. He was a dart through to begin with.

    4 hours ago, stawns said:

Martin was back to being a strong goalie once he got into a strong system in Abby.  No goalie could look good in the disorganized sh!tshow BB brought last season.  He and Silovs were about equal.

I hope that's it. He played decently for a tiny bit but seen I haven't overall goaltending that bad in a long time. I won't be able to buy it until I see it. Still worried about it. A strong back up helps Demko play better as well and takes a lot of stress of him to perform.

Your opinion. But actually Hronek is the much better player than Dobson. Dobson plays a sheltered role on the Island. Hronek was the stud on Detroit’s D.

On 8/19/2023 at 10:34 AM, Maninthebox said:

They played very similar roles. The question I'll be curious to learn the answer to is if Hronek was being held back in that role. Where is his ceiling as the top rhd on a team?

The thread is about the Hronek trade, not necessarily about the player himself. I think the Horvat trade was the weaker deal, as aquiring Dobson in the first place would have made the subsequent trade moot. Unless anybody actually thinks we wanted Beauvillier...

You know what would have been really swell? Dobson AND Hronek.

100% would have rather just taken Dobson and our second and called that way better than Hronek, Raty, and a cap dump. Don't think it was on the table though. He's way better than Hronek imo. I'd have thrown our second in if need be.

  12. 1 hour ago, Elias Pettersson said:

OEL trade would be a close second...

I'm sure Jeannot will play well enough. OEL trade takes the cake. That first rounder will likely be a late one too. So maybe 22 and 56. Not the 9th overall and 43. That difference pretty much wipes out the rest of the picks and Jeannot doesn't count $12 mil against the cap either.

Sure they added Gavrikov and Dubois, what about that goaltending though ? I would'nt hang my hat on a Talbot/Rittich duo.

Hronek is Top 4 RHD, that gives us two decent D pairings (we're not depending on Myers and OEL anymore). Those depth D men and bottom 6 centres were brought in to address the PK. The Canucks were 6th in GF in the Western Conference, scoring isnt the issue..defending is.

Whether you think it's presumptuous or not, the Canucks have a better roster than they did last season. I think they've closed the gap.  That's my opinion (man).

Totally fair. Yeah their goaltending could be an issue. We'll see if Talbot can meet the challenge. Tbh I didn't even think of that. I still think they're one of the top teams in the West now. I really like what the Canucks have done in the offseason as well but I'am in the wait and see camp after our last half decade. I just hope we're at least in the playoff picture until the very end.

Best in the league? Nah I am good with Petey and Miller thanks.

Vegas has good a pretty good group of Centers as well.::D

Yeah they do. Vegas is #1 I agree. Rangers are decent, as are the Avs, Stars, Devils, Sabres, and Blues. Ducks have a lot of potential.

Petey is awesome, we'll see which Miller shows up at the start of the year. He's very good though too. There's only the 2 of them though. Similar to the Oilers in that regard.

Villardi was in the trade to acquire Dubois.

The thing that surprised me most about the Kings was, they ended up giving away Durzi for practically nothing, and seemingly paid someone to take Walker. Those are 2 promising young RHD that could have been a lot more valuable if they shopped them for longer, or perhaps moved them earlier and plugged the holes with vets. But they seem so impatient now. And I’m not a fan of the Dubois add. Good player, but they gave up a lot, and have to pay him a lot too, and he plays a position they’re already quite stacked at. So then they end up having to roll out one of the most questionable goaltending tandems in the league because they have no cap to improve it.

Kings will be good for a while, but I feel they mismanaged the rebuild, and won’t reach contender status because of it.

They did give up a lot for Dubois but wow do they ever have great center depth. One of the best in the league off the top of my head.

    Kopitar

    Dubois

    Danult

Filthy. I like the signing a lot for them. They are all in while they have Kopitar and Doughty, plus they have locked up a long term center for when Kopitar is gone. Of course it remains to be seen how Dubois fits in but if he clicks there ... watch out. I predict they finish second in the Pacific, and what the hell Conference final as well. ::D

In addition Dubois is a big physical player who plays with an edge. Perfect fit to make one of the toughest teams in the league already, even tougher.

1 hour ago, Honky Cat said:

Kopitar and Doughty are superstars (franchise players). When they're gone there isnt anybody going to be stepping into their shoes anytime soon. I think Clarke will be an excellent player, but Doughty level ? No.

A ton of HIGH END prospects ? If you say so. Their prospect pool bears no resemblance of what it looked like a few years ago.

Their impact players are not that young, and there is no guarantee that they cant go anywhere but up. They've whiffed on too many picks at the top of the draft, and their goaltending is suspect.

I think that the Kings will be a strong team this season and next, but the Canucks have considerably closed that gap between the two teams.

Pretty presumptuous to say they've closed the gap before a single game has been played. The Kings added two superior players in Gavrikov, and DuBois, while we added some depth dmen and bottom 6 centers, in addition to Hronek.

that cycle on the boards was the big complaint about the sedins 20 years ago. be patient. Garlund will learn where Brock is waiting with his snipe. And all the sudden worth his cap

I will try just for you. ::D Honestly though my patience is about gone on this failed trade. Hopefully he proves me wrong and gets 70 points on Miller's line if he remains with the team. I'm expecting more parlor tricks from him though and bouncing around the line-up. Would so much prefer we had Guenther playing for us instead.

    Good one.

He hasn’t really had a reliable shutdown d partner, and Cole seems to perform consistently with a variety of teams and partners.

I could see a scenario where he re-establishes himself on the second pair, leaving Hronek to play with Hughes.

    Hughes - Hronek

    Cole - Myers

I’d be interested to see that tested in preseason

Very interesting. Sure would help our depth if that would work. Hughes and Hronek forming a deadly duo would be sweet.

I guess you never saw mighty mouse cartoons.... Garlund is like the mouse in my house that gets the cheeze and doesnt get caught. He can play on any line because he gets the puck. They should stick him with Boeser full time because Garlund draws 2 guys and Boeser is open. Garlund just needs to start looking.

Yeah that's true, Garland is so busy doing spinaramas his teammates have a hard time reading and getting open for passes. When they do his back is usually turned against the wall.
