We are so much better, especially in our top guys. Add Hronek and we are a top five team.

One noticeable thing is that when a structured team comes in and plays a fast predictable game, we used to give up too many high danger chances.

We're now keeping up with that structured speed now and threatening our own structured game right back at them. Like it.

I listened to a couple of Detroit insiders who said the complete opposite.  They said Hronek is a solid two way Dman and plays heavy minutes.  He's not the best defensive Dman in the NHL but he can hold his own.  As for being sheltered, all Dmen need to be sheltered to some degree unless you are a Norris trophy winner.  Even Hughes has to be sheltered.  You aren't going to pick up a Norris trophy winner for a mid-round first and a 2nd round pick.  It we wanted Seider we would have had to trade our own first plus the 2nd, and even then Detroit probably says no.

At the end of the day, Hronek can play on our 2nd pairing and hopefully we get a good complimentary Dman to pair him with.  Same with Hughes.  We need a partner for him too.  Hronek is also going to excel on the PP and he also has good stats on the PK.

In the immediate future I would think OEL will partner with Hronek and could do well if he's healthy IMO

PA will have 2 major moves to make.

Unload Myers with a prospect (Rathbone) and eat some salary- everyone would hate this but starting training camp without Myers would be in win

Stay at home RD for Hughes without trading more picks!

If those two transactions take place over the summer we're in pretty good shape to be competitive.

I am confident Ratys floor is a 3c. Miller needs to make better decisions with the puck and his play without the puck needs to improve for him to be a 2c on a contending calibre team.

Great news is that he's starting to turn it around and I'm seeing much better 2 way play

So then does that mean we just have 1 Top 4D left?

I wonder if the plan is to play Hughes with a decent d man (not a star) on the right side(Severson) and then do the reverse on the 2nd pairing with Hronek being paired with a reliable LD (OEL) and have those 4 log big minutes

    That may work?

That sounds right. Millers best year was when he was deployed as our 2nd line center behind Petey. Before he was injured, his game was looking good without Horvat and with Tocchet. I see that continuing next year as Tocchet/ Miller seem to have striked up a good arrangement.

The 7.2 Million dollar questions is can OEL have a bounce back year in 23-24 like last year. If healthy and with a bonafide top 4 RD that will do the offensive work I believe he can. The buyout as absolutely ugly so any way to avoid would be best.

Raty hopefully will be that 3C , just not sure about next year but he certainly has the potential and is working hard at his faceoffs which will be key.

    Still lotsa work to do!

    Canucks are a 2C and 2 x top 4 D away from being a playoff team.

Their hoping to either draft a 2C or hope Raty turns into one.

Now that they took care of 1 top 4 D, my guess is going in on Severson and Livingstone to round out the defence...

I believe Miller is that 2C we were looking for so a solid 3C  and 1- Top 4 Defensive D man would be at the top of the list

  5. Hughes- X

    OEL - Bear(re-sign)

X - Myers( try to move with asset)

    X- Burroughs

Still remains to be seen if they move Schenn

This should be an interesting summer to say the least.

If something can be done with Myers without throwing a 2nd rounder or top prospect in,  it will be a win

Starting to believe PA may not be the best in the media, but who cares if he gets the job done behind the scenes.

I second this sentiment. Improving steadily.

Third it, Stillman was improving under Boudreau after his rough start. Tocchet here has helped him take a further step. He's aggressive at times, show some offensive flair at times so now it comes down to positioning, simplicity and consistency for him. He has the tools.

Like most Canucks D, playing him with Myers puts him in positions to fail and the only player I would somewhat trust with Myers is an RD on the trading block.

Therefore we either bench Myers or Stillman will get the call most nights without OEL.
