gdcanucks02 Posted October 19, 2011 Share Posted October 19, 2011 The reason vancouver is considered a goalie graveyard is because we get reasonably to immensly talented goalies, expect them to win the jennings, vezina, and stanley cup in the first 2 years they are here, and as soon as that doesnt happen, the fans/media belittle them and show absolutely no confidence therefore turning them into head cases and inevitably ruining their game. Luongo is not the cure to the goalie graveyard, but he will be the greatest goalie destroyed by fans that expect way too much. Since luongo has gotten here he has won the jennings, been nominated for the vezina twice, and been to the stanley cup finals, and yet he gets the most disrespect. Heres why we loved kirk: kirk never gave up on the puck and let people just score 3 or 4 consecutive goals in a period. kirk never asked for a salary contract that front loaded him with 10 million dollars per year (overpayment). kirk never expected other goalies to "pump his tires". kirk didn't have problems with breakaways. goalie13 Posted October 19, 2011 Share Posted October 19, 2011 I really wouldn't include Noronen, Essensa, Whitmore or Hedberg in that list. Maybe Auld either. They were back-ups and really didn't get the same kind of attention or pressure that the number one goalie did. Cloutier also had a great run as a Canuck. Sure it ended fairly badly, but he set several team records along the way. I would say the goalie gaveyard era began after McLean left and ended with Cloutier's arrival. With someone with his work ethic and going to the rink and practicing every day he shouldn't be allowing soft goals behind the net every other game, I do realize soft goals will happen. But ever since the groin injury 3 years ago? He hasn't had the same movement or fight that he once had. Luongo will put up 30 plus wins every year no doubt but you never know what Luongo will show up. Look at the cup finals what games are people going to remember most the games where he shut out Boston or the game where he let in 5 plus questionable goals?
