Common sense
The irony is, we have a political figure who says what we're all thinking instead of the usual hogwash, and suddenly he's the insensitive one. Did you really agree that Hugo Chavez's regime was and is better than Harper's in terms of standard of living, economic prospects, and guaranteed freedoms as set out in a constitution? If so, $700 CAD gets you a one-way ticket to Caracas.
Langdon Algur
The anti white anti west crowd is out in full force today. Please move back to the middle east if you hate the people here so much. Oh wait you won't because it sucks over there. I know people there and they are happy he is dead.

taxi
Are you asking if the standard in living is better in Venezuela than Canada? If so of course the answer is no. But if you are asking leader improved the standard of living for his people more the question gets a bit harder to answer. Chavez did alot for the poor in Venezuela and can't say the same for Harper in Canada, just ask the First Nations. Regardless of what you think of Chavez, Harpers comments immediately following the death of a popular world leader were in poor taste.
Dittohead
someone needs to buy dittohead a globe. Venezuela is in South America so why are you talking about the Middle East?

nucklehead
Didn't see this posted anywhere but thought it was a decent move by the Shawinigan Stragler to show that Canada is not entirely full of douche bags. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/jean-chrtien-among-eclectic-mix-of-dignitaries-leaders-who-attended-chavez-funeral/article9559388/ The ceremony drew world leaders including former Canadian prime minister Jean Chrétien, athletes and left-wing celebrities, while multitudes of Chavez supporters watched on giant screens outside. Chrétien, who met Chavez several times, attended the funeral along with his wife, Aline.
Buggernut
I think Stephen Harper has it all figured out that Canada's economy is much more dependent on the US than on Venezuela, and therefore it is the former whose ass we have to kiss more. As smug as all we nobodies with no political power can get with our online US bashing, it is Steve et al who have to do all the foreign diplomacy juggling on behalf of our country. DeNiro
God bless Chavez, he would have been a much better leader than Harper.

Buggernut
The sad thing about this country is that we actually think the US cares what we do or say. It's like a little kid brother trying to get attention from his older brother. Harper goes along with everything the US says and in the process makes us look like the US's b*tch around the world. Countries have respected us way more in the past when we've had leaders that aren't afraid to go against what the US says.
DeNiro
"Respect" by itself however doesn't bring $$$ to our wallets and food to our tables. Fact is, we're just the northern fringe of the North American economic bloc that is centred around the US.

Electro Rock
You want respect? You need real demonstratable power, and a whole bunch of other factors that are at odds with the Canadian national character. The last time Canada was truly respected on the world stage was the '70s, *not* because of Trudeau's policies but because the world still remembered what it did in WW2 and Korea. Its only been since that time where Canada has gained the reputation as being a bunch of limpwristed underachievers, outside of an icerink anyway.
