Computer Crash/black screen question?

Hi guys got a computer question.

Randomly when I'm playing games on my computer or talking in teamspeak/skype to friends my screen will just go black. Lose all video, but things are still running in the background (I could hear my friends still talking on teamspeak) but when I tried to talk they couldn't hear me and I had to force restart my computer.

My friends say maybe it's overheating but I doubt that's the issue since it was only on for a grand total of like 30 minutes ( I had it shut off all day / night. 24 hours) and it just went total black. To be honest it felt almost like it was in sleep mode.

Anyways, any ideas?

Is this situation similar to what you're describing?

My suggestion was going to be graphics card overheating, as well. It can happen very quickly using any video intensive application and say, have your fan for the card stop working.

Download SpeedFan, http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

It will tell you the temperature sensor values, then check the readings against your graphics card/processor specs.

EDIT: For laptops especially, one of the specs at the top of my list when buying any consumer electronics product is the max temp of the processor(s).

Yeah. I think it could be my graphics card. I've been playing Archeage recently and it's causing my graphics card fan to go crazy. I'll get that program as soon as I'm home to test the temps.

But yeah I jusT formatted my computer like 3 weeks ago. Got new drivers and everything. My card is old tho. Very old. It's a GTX 570. Good for its time but it's been used for a lot of games. Could be finally dying. Thank you guys. Appreciate it.

Likely a video card issue, you can overheat a card in minutes if it isn't cooled properly. Since your not getting any artifacting or issues on boot up you may be able to fix the problem by taking the cooler off the card and applying new thermal paste if the card is overheating.

Yeah I'm also gonna try cleaning it out. Don't think I've properly dusted it out in like months. Bought an air duster (compressed air) gonna clean it out see if that helps. If not I'm getting a new card come Christmas anyways. 570 is nice but it's run it's course I think :(

I am still running 2 GTX 560ti's in SLI and they are playing most everything pretty well still. They are starting to die as well on me though sadly.

The most recent driver update has caused some issues with these cards for myself. You might want to revert to the version right before the most recent drivers and see if that resolves the issue. Also, Speedfan and NvidiaInspector are good. Inspector will allow you to control the GPU fan manually. Ramp it up to around 60-75% before you start playing and see if it keeps the temps down some more.

I air dusted the **** outta my comp and cleaned all around the fans and i've noticed it's gotten significantly quieter, and no issues since (mind you it's literally been 24 hours) plan on getting some major upgrades for Christmas / boxing day. Like MAJOR. Haven't determined some factors but this is on the list so far:

Arc 647 gaming case (Some people don't agree with this, but it has tons of fans AND my computer will look like a spaceship :bigblush: )

GTX 970 Video card (outperforms the 980 in some aspects and is like $250-$300 cheaper? I think Tom's Hardware had the 970 at a 5-10 fps lower framerate then the 980 but with my specs I'll still maintain 60+ on Ultra with any game)

Motherboard: I haven't determined that yet, gotta go to NCIX to see what they recommend. I don't plan to overclock so it'll be a basic board

RAM: Depends on the Motherboard.. but I plan to upgrade to 16gb of DDR4 which should be out by Christmas

and then finally some form of Cooling system as having a cooler system will actually significantly improve performance. Nothing fancy here tho. Expecting to dump around $700 or so? Pretty excited! :towel::towel::towel:

Thanks for this link man ! My new laptop runs fairly cool but is a bit loud and want to see when it is the hottest.

Don't bother with the ddr4 it's a waste of money. Just get some good ddr3 and don't cheap out on the motherboard. Get a good motherboard with the money you save by getting ddr3. Cheap mobo's are the easiest way to not get full performance out of your hardware.

If you have the space and room for it I would recommend a full ATX tower. More room for air to flow and easier to install everything. That said, they are freaking huge. I have the Thermaltake Chaser Mk-1 and it is ridiculously roomy.

The new 900 series Nvidia cards seem pretty legit. I have been looking into them as well but I like to wait for quite some time after the release of cards before buying them. You wont go wrong with that card though. The 70 models always are perfect for gamers. The 80+ models are overkill and unnecessary IMO for the difference in price.

Dont skimp to bad on the motherboard. It is literally the one thing that makes everything else work and flow proper. Don't dumb it down to much on the Mobo.

8Gb should be the minimum for RAM but upgrading to 16Gb is always a good idea.

As far as cooling goes I have the Corsair H100 for the CPU and everything else is air cooled (I have 12 fans from 80mm - 200mm) and I have never had issues with heat. Full water cooling costs a buttload of money but is fun and can significantly improve the life of your components.
