Thumbs Down to Patrice Cormier

For those of you who haven't seen or heard about it yet, last night's game between the Quebec Remparts and Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, former World Junior captain Patrice Cormier was ejected in overtime after a vicious elbow headshot on Mikael Tam. Tam was convulsing on the ice and left the game on a stretcher. He is in stable condition but has suffered a concussion and possibly a broken jaw. Needless to say it could've been much worse. A word of warning - the video is quite graphic and horrifyin

Number Crunching IX: Us against the world edition

Between Ref-gate, Fight-gate and The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien (whoops, wrong forum), there was certainly no shortage of controversial topics this past week. Here on Number Crunching, we certainly don't shy away from controversy as we take a look at the best and worst statistics from the week that was in Canucks hockey and answer that burning question of just whether the refs really do hold a grudge against the boys in blue. And as always, read on to find out who takes home this week's cov

On Ron MacLean and Auger/Burrows

I think everyone's a little tired of the Stephane Auger-Alex Burrows incident. What had been said to Auger behind closed doors won't be revealed, but it'll probably be along the lines of, "well, you know, just keep your mouth shut before the game and watch who you talk to." The NHL was in a bit of a pickle here because they can't pick sides - whatever side they choose, it sends the message that the NHL acknowledges that they have refs who cannot stay impartial during a game but are really refusi

Decision Time: Who comes out of the lineup on Wednesday?

Ryan Johnson's anticipated return to the Canucks lineup on Wednesday night against the Edmonton Oilers will mean a decision will need to be made on who comes out of the lineup. Winger Steve Bernier and defenceman Aaron Rome could also return. After a 6-2 drubbing of the Pittsburgh Penguins, it's hard to pinpoint a particular player who had a bad game.

Penguins 2 - 6 Canucks F - Game 48 - 01.16.10 After a controversial week, The Canucks show up and blow out the Stanley Cup Champions 6 to 2. It could have got far worse for the Penguins, but there was no need to run up the score with the entire country watching. Marc-André Fleury and Brent Johnson were forced to sit this game out due to injuries. John Curry started the game and was shortly pulled in the second period after giving up five goals. Ending the Skid against Sid

I think the Canucks should lobby harder for a more-balanced schedule. We need more of these good East conference teams coming into Vancouver at the end of their road trips and stinking out the joint. Obviously the Crosby's, Malkin's and Ovechkin's of the league also need to make several trips out here before they do anything impressive in front of the Canuck faithful. Who would've thought a visit from the defending Stanley Cup champions would be just what the doctor ordered to end the Canucks

Salmon Kings Goal on TSN

History was made last night. For the first time a goal scoring hilight from a game at SOFMC was shown on TSN. It was the 5th goal of a 5 goal first period outburst in a 6-3 Victoria Salmon Kings victory over the visiting Bakersfield Condors. Adam Taylor was the goal scorer with a tricky move that was preceided by some amazing puck control by Scott Howes and Dirk Southern. This play made TSN's Sports Centre Honour Roll + was the hilight of the night.

Wrapping up Burrows/Auger

In the end, the Alex Burrows - Stephane Auger incident doesn't seem to have amounted to much. Why does the NHL hate Twitter?

When Alex Burrows lashed out and gave Stephan Auger a verbal donkey punch, I wasn't surprised in the least. Burrows is a passionate guy who cares about two things - helping the Canucks succeed and the Montreal Alouettes winning. What shocked me about his tirade was that he did it the old fashioned way. Burrows stepped up to the mic and didn't hold back, something not often seen from athletes anymore. It would have made more sense for Burrows to Tweet his thoughts, circa Larry Johnso

Road Woes Continue

And so the Canucks' road woes continue after a third period collapse in which Antti Miettinen was the Wild's spark. The loss drops Vancouver to two games below .500 on the road and a chance to claim top spot in the division. I think it bears mentioning that the Canucks must finish above .500 on the road to make the playoffs. The face their biggest challenge in February and March and the Canucks have yet to play with any form of consistency. The recent 4-win surge was nice, but it has been follow

Rattled

On the same day that Colin Campbell and Gary Bettman decided to withhold discipline from Stephane Auger and fine Alex Burrows $2500, the Canucks misfortune spilled onto the ice. The Wild are hot, 4 straight wins and 19-10-3 since opening the season 5-10-0 Derek Boogaard of the Minnesota Wild threw more controversy at the Canucks camp. Boogaard, who hasn’t scored in 200 games (Jan.7, 2006) told the Minnesota Star-Tribune that just prior to his fight with Darcy Hordichuk, Hordichuk said: “

With 1:48 to go in the first period, Ryan Kesler dug out the puck and scored his 12th goal of the season to make it a one goal game.

My two cents (or more) on the Burrows-Auger controversy

I don't blog after every game but I was planning to submit something about the Nashville game -- until I watched it. By the end of the game, I was so disillusioned and disgusted I couldn't bring myself to say anything about it -- and that was before I became aware of the bomb that Burrows dropped. The game sucked and I would've been of that opinion even if the Canucks had won, though admittedly I would've been slightly less annoyed. It sucked because there was a stretch in the second period w

Burrows v. Auger: Case Closed?

So justice was meted out by Colin Campbell and the NHL tonight regarding Alex Burrows' comments pertaining to the officiating in Monday night's loss to the Nashville Predators. Burrows, for speaking his mind and accusing referee Stephane Auger of having a grudge against him, was fined $2,500 for doing so. According to Darren Dreger and Greg Wyshynski over at Puck Daddy, Auger is receiving no punishment and the matter is closed. Understandably, this has folks in Canuckland seething. The fact

The video evidence of what Auger did before the game and the blatantly weak calls as well as a history of very poor officiating makes this yet another controversy the Canucks find themselves in the thick of. What to do with Burrows and Auger

I read a blog tonight that made a good point about how the NBA mis-handled the same situation with referee Joey Crawford. Same situation with Spurs star Tim Duncan. Crawford was suspended and Duncan fined. In San Antonio's first game after the incident, Duncan was ejected after getting a double-technical, and a brutal non-call in a playoff series against the Lakers cost them a game, which the NBA later apologized for. Are the refs close with each other? Yes. If Auger is suspended over this, w
