You're right, I forgot he is Finnish. My bad. I'm still hesitant but I really hope he lives upto his hype because from the plays I've seen, he appears to be defensively mature.

    He’s got the full package

after next season everyone will be super excited even the draft benson omg camp

We're tanking this year for Mackiln. If we don't get 1st OA we'll trade Pety for it. He's gonna want max money's to stay here.

    Start the rebuild.

Honestly with our roster holes tanking isn't out of the question.\

Even if we didn't get the Macklin or Eiserman

Getting Zeev BUIUM would be amazing.

We will see what they do this weekend signing sand trades if any.

Another player that is likely headed to the free agency market is defenseman Carson Soucy. Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff is reporting that the Seattle Kraken and the hulking defenseman had discussions about an extension, but it appears that at this point he is going to unrestricted free agency and will be in a new uniform next season.

This past season Soucy finished last in Kraken defensemen for points and ice time, however, he will still be a significant loss on the backend for Seattle. Together with offensive defenseman Justin Schultz, they formed one of the top third-defensive pairings in the NHL last season, which is what will ultimately price Soucy out of Seattle.

Soucy had three goals and 13 assists in 78 games last season and while he will never an offensive defenseman, he may be paid like one given that he’ll be entering a very weak free-agent market for defensemen. Soucy can bring a lot to a new team, he can play on both sides of the ice, has a bomb from the point, and is a good penalty killer. The one caveat to Soucy’s recent success is that he’s played sheltered minutes for the past two seasons. If a team pays him like a second-pairing defenseman, they might be very disappointed with the results.

Sounds like a Canucks scenario to me

I actually did a top 100 for fantasy purposes (probably a little different than how I'd actually rank them but not by that much) so just checking my list against who was on the board at each pick I'd have gone:

    11. Eduard Sale

    75. Juraj Pekarcik

    89. Jayden Perron

    105. Aram Minnetian

    107. Cam Allen

    119. Beckett Hendrickson

    171. Connor Levis

As stated in the title, let us know which players you would have selected in the positions available! The aim is to come back to this in 3-5 years and see how we all did!

    I shall start!

    Round 1

    Pick 11: LW Zach Benson

    Round 3

    Pick 75: RW Jayden Perron

    Pick 89: LD Luca Cagnoni

    Round 4

    Pick 105: RD Cam Allen

    Pick 107: C Luca Pinelli

    Pick 119: RD Arem Minnetian

    Round 6

    Pick 171: LW Timur Mukhanov

This is the first year I've been able to do a more in depth analysis and scouting work. Probably have pumped well over 100 hours of homework into this draft but most of it is on first round to second round talent. I don't have access to many games so I'm reliant on reports for later round picks, combined with shift by shift analysis if it's available and just general internet research. I was like a hardcore casual scout this year lol.

If you're familiar with these players you can tell I aim for upside as opposed to specific traits. Try to find good deals in the draft. Lots of these players are projects but have a bit of special something to their game and need something else to round out to turn into NHL players.

I'm confident with my top 2 picks despite being undersized forwards. Both are play drivers that have some great tools and good motors and good IQ. I would have also gambled on Ziemmer however being truthful to my order drafting Perron would have meant I couldn't have taken him for our second third round pick as he wasn't available (but had I cheated, I could have taken Ziemmer first and then Perron second).

From thereon out there's definitely more gambling going on. Go big or go home picks.

I really really really wish we had some 2nd round picks. So much potential fell into the 2nd round and we didn't have a single pick there. Oh well! Let me know how your picks would have gone!

    My Stab:

    11. Tom Willander

    75. Hunter Brzustewicz

    89. Jayden Perron (Although I like the pick Mynio they made I think he could be a sneaky 3rd Rounder, )

    105. Hoyt Stanley

    107. Jaden Lapinski

    119. Aram Minnetian

    171. Aidan Celebrini

Has Myers ever had a decent D partner with the Canucks?   No doubt Myers isn't a top D man... but seems he would be much better if he had a superior partner paired up with him.

He has to have some value as a Big Bodied R hand D.

Love how he flattened Tavaras in the Leafs game.  Elevated the whole team.

I’d say edler  when they first played together and Hughes ain’t bad.

Okay as great as that one Tavares play was the opposite end of the spectrum compared to getting knocked off a puck by caufield along the boards.

If there’s a trade for him I hope we pull the trigger so fast

Pesce is my dream for this offseason. Get him and one of Graves or Soucy and we’re cookin’.

I just don’t see the trade fit and if any team could go for him it’s buffalo

have more assets then us to trade.

having Miller on his new salary, signing hronek  and extending petey be really tough to fit him in cap wise.

im wondering how he’s going to age too or if he will decline like parayko.

I just don’t think we have 1 the asset package to make the acquisition and 2 the cap space for him when he needs to be resigned and 3 scared how it will age

Im trying to sell myself on the pick, but its hard. He a 20 year old, smaller left handed winger/center, with uninspiring numbers (5th in team scoring). What do you like most about his game?

I know nothing and I’m not boosting it I’m just saying I’m willing to give our team the benefit of the doubt on it right now

I wasn't super psyched hearing the team drafted another Swedish defensemen prospect but I think that is more because of what happened with Juolevi. I hope the best for Willander and I hope he's one of those players that starts to tip the teams fortunes in the right direction.

You know OJ wasn't Swedish right?

Willander is going to be a horse for us get behind him and watch him run!

I dont know about this, you shouldn't take rankings as gospal. But this is a guy that wasn't ranked by any major scouting source that I could see and has been passed over in two previous drafts. Taking him over 18 year old RD's Mittetian or Allen was a mistake in my opinion.

    Kids develop at different rates.

There are kids who takes them to there D+2 to show they are solid prospects for whatever reason.

They must feel confident about him.

I would have loved Hoyt or Aram or both! but thats just because my knowledge of mid to late round picks was such a narrow focus.

Lets trust our teams scouting process and what they have seen in these C's games.

Lol yeah I didn't mean to attack Provost. His post was just the most recent of a bunch that were much more egregious. Was actually a decent post aside from the one comment where he was so confident that Alriksson would have gone through the draft if the Canucks hadn't picked him. Obviously there's no way of knowing that, and in fact scouts tend to talk among themselves at rinks and often have insight into what other teams might do, so if they take a player earlier than expected it could be because they know another scout for another team likes the player.

I guess my thing is if I know absolutely nothing about a topic I generally try to keep my mouth shut. And I always find it pretty annoying when people talk like they know shit about something they clearly know nothing about. But I guess it's a discussion forum so of course people are gonna say shit just to say something. But sometimes people do have actual interesting or informative things to say about these prospects, and it sucks that it gets buried under an avalanche of people talking just to talk.

Ah I didn't see that post.

The OJ / Tkachuk comments online have been killing me.

    People are hurt deeply.

Alriksson I am giving them trust on the pick. Huge kid who can move and they got lots of looks on him.

I like the project I know very little about this but our sweidhs scouts have a great track record and when's last time we draft a massive forward project like this.

I like the list, we're not rushing our prospects and players like Woo are finally co into around.  I like to see what Johansson can do.  And I don't think Willander is that far away.  1 year in the NCAA and he'll be ready to go just like Hughes did.  He's got the smarts. I think this defence is better simply without OEL.  The future could look like this

    Hughes -  Willander

    DPetey - Hronek

    Hirose - Woo

    Truscott - Johansson

    Hughes-Willander

    Hirose-Hronek

    EP2-HUNTER / Johansson

    Could be a cool blend.

I have a feeling Hirose could be Hronek d partner not this year but maybe next year.

But ya if Hirose becomes a player, EP2 becomes a player, Willander hits and just 1 more of our RHD prospects hits we looking PRETTY

My read on the draft is similar to @Provost. The general consensus is that Willander is a very good prospect who immediately goes to the top of the Canuck prospect list but, in a very deep draft, was not a particular bargain at #11. He may have been the best guy on the board when the Canucks picked, but he did not "fall" to 11. And the Canucks passed on Benson to take him. So ,yeah, happy to have him in the system but, to mix gold and baseball  metaphors I would rate this pick as "par for the course" rather than a home run.

The same metaphor applies to the Canuck draft as a whole.

Brzustewicz did "fall" to the third round as he was generally expected to go in the second round, but if he makes it to the NHL, even as depth D, that would be a big win.

Beyond that the picks are not getting much praise from the media.  They are, of course, all longshots.

But @HighOnHockey makes a good point.  The Canucks are not just following the public rankings. They are trying to bring additional knowledge to bear. And there is an overall theme in the picks. As @Dr. Crossbar says, the Canuck are going "all-in" on defence (Where their pool was very weak and where it is hard to get good players in trade or as UFAs).

Also, apparently the Canucks were targeting "hockey IQ", character, and commitment to improvement -- kind of the opposite of Jake Virtanen. Those are the guys who improve the most post-draft

Given Rutherford's track record, we can reasonably hope that these picks are, on average, a lot higher in the "redraft" after two or three years.

    Ya sounded like:

Character (Confidence, Self Awareness, Compete), Hockey IQ, Skating was the trend.

Well Sawyer kid looks like he coulda been a steal. He should have a big big year last year.

Wagon of a team, and it was hard for him to get prime ice time. But he ended the season as their go to close out dman and trusted in key moments. Excited about him too. He wasn't on my radar.

  13. 11 minutes ago, Provost said:

… umm you know that central scouting isn’t media rankings right… right?

Also that most of the other lists are done by people with significant hockey resumes and experience… not random bloggers.

You know every teams pro teams scouts had vastly different rankings. Benson ranged from 5-6 --> 14-17 on NHL team lists. even look at Bob Macs aggregate of 10 Scouts.

Media guys the majority of them dont dig too deep but they produce content to engage us fans.

Central scouting staff is just one team of scouts, and you could easily argue the are an inferior group to every NHL teams scouting team.

Its hard to get too upset with round 4-7 picks.

Even @HighOnHockey absolute favorite prospect from this draft to target in the 2nd round and on was availble to pick and hes not freaking out a bout it

If Mueller ends up being a bottom 6 C at some point for us down the road thats a big success for that pick range. I get taking big swings.

And there is something to be said about drafting and developing your own bottom 6 Cs and not having to go out and acquire them,

But we clearly had list and stuck to it and took our BPA's. Luckily it resulted in two RHD to start!

Does he? I really haven't heard much of that. Everyone talks like he's a sure thing.

hes not a sure thing but his scoring profile is that of a top 3 pick in past drafts. But there's clearly a reason he fell to 13 and he wasn't even picked right after our pick.

In my opinion the top 5 team draft performances in 2023 (not in order) were:

    Philly

    Seattle

    Washington (limited picks)

    Columbus

    Buffalo

They all knocked it out of the park

    Id add

    STL - crushed it imo

    CHI

    NAS

    CALGARY - underrated draft
