He doesn't retire until first day at camp. Then he passes out on the ice....

Not to me. Juolevi just wasn't ready to begin an NHL journey. Ultimately he wasn't skilled enough, and clearly was not in good enough shape. The only extra disappointment here is that I was happy we drafted a blue chip defenseman because we really needed that boost from the back end and it never came.

Virtanen, on the other hand, HAD the tools; he was always on the cusp of breaking out. Yes, he also came to camp out of shape but if he just committed himself, he would have been fine and would have had an NHL career. Instead, he f'd around and found out. To me, that's far more disappointing to see a guy throw his career away than a guy who was destined never to have one in the first place.

Either way, those are two *major* flubs which made it that much harder to become a competitive team again. If we made difference choices in a parallel universe, we could have had:

    Kuz Pettersson Mik

    Fiala Miller Boeser

    Beauvillier Suter Podz Garland

    Joshua Blueger Podz

    Hogs, DiGiuseppe

    Hughes McAvoy
    Cole Hronek

    Soucy Myers

    Wolanin, Hirose

    Cest le vie

Without going down the rabbit hole that is the butterfly effect, wouldn't that roster be about $15m over the cap?

But yeah Virtanen >>>>>>>>>>> Juolevi in terms of disappointment on and off the ice.

  2. Maybe I'm missing something, but if Tanner is back and only Poolman is on LTIR the current roster is nearly $2.5m over the cap. Given the maximum buriable is $1.15m they'd need to send 3 players down leaving a roster of 22 including Mikeyev. Would need to send another down to fit Podz on the team too. All the players on Cap Friendly's roster would need to clear waivers, though I'm not convinced our waifs are that appealing to other teams anyway.

So technically they can be compliant but it doesn't leave a lot of room. Guessing they are going to make a move, but doesn't necessarily have to happen before day 1.

Gagner may be ready to retire but having a chance to put on the jersey of the team that drafted him one last time to end his career on his terms be it on a PTO but not earning an NHL contract. It would still allow him to likely get some pre season games where he could wear the Edmonton uniform and kind of ride of into the sunset on his own terms with the team that granted him his childhood dream of becoming a NHL player and making millions along the way!!!

Congrats to Sam for carving out a solid NHL career and making millions to setup up his family for generations hopefully!

He holds the Edmonton record for most points in a single game does he not...that is impressive considering Wayne Gretzky kind of has all the records!!!

He was an early 1st round pick, was just a fluke that Edmonton drafted him,  he would've got a chance at the NHL regardless and he doesn't owe Coilers anything. He wants another contract, if he's not signed that won't be leaving on his terms.

Maybe I'm just being a downer but hoping for unearned generational wealth seems a bit weird too.

Also he tied that record with 99

Better prospects than Woo have slipped through the waivers. But then again, we have Gadjovich get claimed. So i'd say no one knows, it's 50/50 lol...

Fair point. In my addled brain I thought Gadjovich had played much more than 1 game for Van, but internet says otherwise. Maybe PA is playing 4D chess and the only reason Woo wasn't called up last season was to sneak him through waivers this year.

    Incidently, I'm assuming Jonah's 17 PIM/GP is a Canucks record?

out of the 2024 UFA Defenseman not playing for contenders. There's Going to be  Tyler Myers, Noah Hanifan, Nikita Zaitsev, Tyson Barrie, Chris Tanev, Nikita Zadorov, Shayne Gostisbehere, and Brendan Dillon available at the deadline. Hanifan probably traded and signed before the season starts. At the trade deadline  for contenders looking at adding a 6th or 7th defensemen, out of the above mentioned names Myers @ 3M  should be in demand.

Hmmm, maybe if Myers has a great season up until the TDL but I don't see it tbh. We'll revisit this in the Spring, if it turns out I'm wrong and he gets more than a 3rd I owe you a Coke.

Interesting (and ironic) that our new Beau is actually a much better fit with us than old Bo is with the Islanders. New Beau is on a 4.1 mil cap and old Bo is on  an 8.5 mil cap.

I'd be willing to swap them back, with retention on their end of course :bigblush:

Giving away any of those players is a dumb idea, they have value contrary to belief on here.

Beau was a cap dump when we acquired him, nothing has changed since. Brock and Garland are slightly overpaid for what they bring, in a flat cap world that's a big issue. If management could've got assets for any of them they'd be gone already.

Nope. A second buyout period, before the start of the season, was allowed only in the first two years of the CBA so teams could adjust to that new contract. That was for 2013 and 2014 seasons only.

Nope nope. I think you're confusing the compliance buyouts with arbitration buyouts.

    Quote
Buyouts Outside of the Regular Period

Clubs whom have 1 or more arbitration filings may be permitted to perform a buyout outside of the regular window. This gives teams another opportunity to become cap compliant following an arbitration case.

Yeah, that’s what I believe. It’s the salaries keeping them Canucks. They obviously have some skill and value, but nowhere near what they are being paid.

I don't think Garland and Boeser are too far off market value, but it's enough to make them tough to move. Myers obviously is but, in JB's defence, the timing of his signing was quite unlucky. At the beginning of 19-20 the cap was 81.5m, it's now 83.5m a rise of less than 2.5%. If the cap had gone up by the same amount as the years leading up to that season it would now be over $94m and there'd be an extra $340m potentially on offer across the league. Obviously not all teams spend to the cap, but the floor raises would be proportionate. In my alternate universe they'd all be movable or maybe even worth keeping. Would still be crazy to trade for OEL in 2021 though.

Basically, through the power of maths, I've discovered that something really bad happened in 2019-20 that really screwed the Canucks cap management. As soon as I work out what it was someone's going to pay.

For an organization that has players that no one will trade for. It seems a lot of Ex-Canucks seem to be in demand.

The question is will Yzer-plan work out long term?

Not sure depth players signing league minimum contracts really screams 'in demand' and I don't get how they have any relevance to Boeser, Myers, or Garland who are paid 6-9x as much.

Bold prediction - most/all of these ex-Canucks will be available on (and probably pass through) waivers.

He'll be 30 when he signs his 7-8 year deal.  He's getting $6 million+.  Hronek at $7 million+.  Hughes at $10 million+ plus in 4 years.  Where is the money coming from to fit all these guys?  And where is Willander going to play, on the 3rd pairing?  Why bother drafting a stud RHD who projects as a top pairing guy if you are just going to overpay for a 30 year old in free agency?

If we were actually going to trade for Pesce, we should have drafted Matthew Wood instead...

    28+1=29

Though I still wouldn't trade for him.

He doesn’t have to prove anything. He was bought out because his previous salary wasnt commensurate with his output, but his current output when healthy is within the range of a 3.5 mill Dman, provided he’s tasked with less TOI than he was here.

People making him out to be such dead weight are reaching. He’s still a very sound positioning 2 way Dman with decent speed and a good eye and shot on the PP. The question is can he continue to tolerate wear and tear. I’d add him at 3 - 3.5 simply to hedge a bet that he’s also an LTIR candidate which could prove very beneficial if required to parlay into legal cap circumvention.

I don't think you understand how LTIR works. Unless JB gets hired somewhere, I can't see OEL getting close to $3.5m this season.

Well if the players don't get it it's gotta go somewhere.

Yeah, obviously. This is probably not the place to explain how I'd reorganise the whole of society, but if I could control the NHL all the teams would be owned by the fans, ticket prices would be affordable, beer would be under $10, and the games would be on free TV. Players would still earn a good living and their would be more connection between the team, the fans, and the wider community. As an added bonus FA, Bettman et al could all f off.

I always take issue with this statement, why should the players who actually put their bodies on the line get capped while the billionaire owners get to keep the rest and just get richer?

You always take issue with what statement? I'm not saying the owners should get paid millions of dollars either. I don't think anyone should be paid $8m a year, but I'd rather JT got it than Aqulini. Millionaire sportsmen and billionaire owners are both symptoms of our dysfunctional society, but the owner class are far more egregious and undesirable.

I am surprised how much support there is for this contract, He ain't no Pavel Bure or Marcus Naslund.... Wish what we could see the Sedin's think of this contract. you all realize its till the end of this decade? kinda like the OEL contract when the yotes puffed that into existence?

In 2005 Naslund signed a 3x6m contract. Obviously it's a much shorter deal, but he was a couple of years older and already past his prime. At the time the cap was only $39m so, assuming my quick calculations are correct, that would be $12.8m today.

Bure signed a 5x5m deal in 1994. Pre-salary cap so not really comparable but even if he signed the exact deal in 2005 he'd still be getting close to $11m as a proportion of the 23-24 cap. Realistically he'd probably get closer to $7m at the beginning of the cap era, which would work out as $15m today.

So yeah JT ain't no Naslund or Bure and that's why he's getting two thirds of their money. Personally I don't think anyone should get $8m a year, but in today's NHL Miller's contract is fine.
