Did any top 4 young rhd get traded today or in the last couple of days? If not I will give management a slight pass. That was one of our biggest needs, but if none got moved, hard to buy what is not for sale.

It’s like we got Brad Richardson and a 2023 4th for Motte. Motte only had 19 games left this season with us. I’m betting they were in contract talks to the last 5 min and then we had to quickly unload him.

Well I guess all the people who wanted to make trades just for the sake of making trades got their wish. Feels great doesn’t it?

This is underwhelming

We keep Miller at 9 mil per, and how do we afford to keep Dermott at 4 mil? We would need an ELC guy coming up to replace guys like Dermott who are moving into contracts where they earn too much. Where do those ELC guys come from? Lots and lots of picks, especially in the second and third rounds.
It's not the player (Dermott) it's the philosophy of trying to speed up the process to becoming a consistently competitive team. IMHAO the Benning method (being replicated by this move) isn't the best way to build what we want.
I just think we were paying Hamonic $3 million, so what’s the difference at $4? If he does play well enough to get paid like that, it means he has flourished here and likely in our top 4. At his age and his next contract he would be 27 and he’s also signed next year at $1.5 million. Worst case you trade him and sell high like we should be doing with Miller right now.

Exaclty! Build the farm and collect the picks first. Adding 25 year old guys at the cost of picks isn't helping build a long term winner. It's hoping for a quick fix that might work but usually doesn't. And will mean a shorter window. If Dermott plays well, then he will earn more money. What do we do in a year and a half when he earns a 4 mil deal? Trade him for a third and do it all over again. This philosophy is not a way to build a consistent winner.
So if he plays good enough to earn a $4 million dollar contract how would his value be the same?

You have to imagine they know a lot about this player. I imagine they saw him quite a bit when he was playing against Pittsburg. Just hope for the best!

Can anyone please enlighten me.... Why did we get rid of Hamonic and then get Dermott when Hamonic is bigger, tougher, and got more points production??!! This is an obvious downgrade just to get $1.5M in cap savings!!
It’s one of those change of scenery trades that could pan out great if the player gets motivated by this. He’s much more mobile and only 25. This will be his second team so it should be his best opportunity to make something of himself, as soon as you start going on your third, fourth team, you are a journeyman Dman

In the end we rely on Demko anyways with the Dermott and Hamonic swap. We saved cap and got younger and more mobile.

So we replace Hamonic for Dermott and save $1.5 million in cap? I would have tater saved $3 million in cap by and keep the third round pick. Guys like this are available in free agency for “free”

This is not a good move, period. There were better options for free in free agency! Why did we give up a 3rd? We went from wow, to holy cow in the matter of 45 mins.

Whos going to replace them? Theyre both good players.
Lots of options with $12 million in cap space. You can find a team over the cap like Vegas etc and leverage them for a decent player and pick. Asset management 101

If we can somehow unload Pearson and Myers without taking cap back that is $12 million in cap space for 3 replaceable players.

You have to figure this move is because it’s hard to attract free agents to Ottawa with where the team is at right now. For $3 million and one year they will be able to have the player fill the role for a year and probably be able to trade him next deadline for the same return.

Writing is on the wall here. If he doesn’t waive he doesn’t get his bonus.

It’s time. Love the guy but we need other things like prospects in the system.

Cap hit.
They retained 50%. But yes 2 more years at $1.5 is attractive

I’m a die hard Canuck fan and always will be…. Sometimes it’s tough though. Playing a backup goalie with points needed we $&!# the bed! I can’t imagine a single Canucks fan happy with this one.

So his contract is similar to OEL’s. They both are done when they are 36. OEL has had better numbers than Lindholm.
Let’s see which player ages better…
OEL is $8.25 million but we got some retention. They aren’t similar

Interesting tidbit re: Scanlin (and other UDFA’s):
Just goes to show how off-cap spending in areas that support the players (coaches, staff, facilities, etc) can pay off, in making an organization more attractive to players.
In this case, the former regime deserves much credit. Ryan Johnson ultimately hired Braid, but with the backing of Benning and Aquilini, as part of an upgrade of the team’s development staff. And Mackenzie Braid is the son of Dawn Braid (one of the biggest names in the world of skating coaches).
It’s encouraging that the Canucks organization has committed to building up their development staff and bringing in good people, and that Rutherford (and some of the other management team members) have talked about expanding this even further, with facilities upgrades, even more staff additions in the near future, and overall just making the Canucks an organization that fully supports their players and can offer them whatever resources are needed to help make them the best versions of themselves possible, on and off the ice.
So long as ownership is willing, this is the type of spending, off the cap, that can give a team a competitive edge, when it comes to attracting free agents, and also developing their player assets into actual NHL players (and thereby maximizing draft pick value and ELC commitments).
It remains to be seen whether or not Scanlin (and other highly sought UDFA’s) will choose Vancouver. But it’s definitely a positive that the Canucks are said to be in the mix because of what they can offer as an organization, in terms of their coaching and development resources, rather than just what they can offer for a contract and roster spot.
These UFA free agents also get to come in and work with two hall of famers that could probably still play. The Sedin twins are very much involved as well and I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt that they are teaching a little bit on the skill portion. At this point, Scanlin is the guy I want to come in and learn from the best. We have a great history with unsigned UFA players.

[Trade] Canucks trade Tyler Motte to Rangers for 2023 4th-round pick

Well, I’m puzzled as to why they broke up our 4th line for a 4th round pick? Those guys had such good chemistry and Motte was the leader on that line. I would have looked into trading the whole line together as a package before I would have let one go for a mid round pick. We also added Travis Dermott? WTF? I feel like they should have just stood pat once they got a 3rd for Hamonic and gained $3 million in cap space. Surprised we couldn’t even get future considerations or a 7th for Halak.
