With news pouring in, it looks like a new GM could be hired as early as this weekend. As reported Allvin, Mellanby, Burke, Futa and one other candidate are in the running. Let’s keep all GM/AGM news and articles in one thread.

Only problem is what happens when the team is not quite out of it, but not quite in it either. That middle ground. Do you become sellers or buyers? I find that to be the most difficult decision. You’re close, but if you decide to sell, that sends the message to the rest of the team that you’re done this season. But you’re not quite that close, so if you buy, well, that could get you into all kinds of problems moving into the off-season when the team doesn’t make the playoffs. You miss out on maximizing Miller’s worth and value for a return.
It’s a Buisness first and if you run your team off feelings or predictions you end up where we are now. Look at the Vegas approach, those guys are cut throat but they run a great team. You get the price you want and move on.
-
Then you sign him in the off-season. Trade him for a second all day long if you are out of the playoffs. If you lose him to UFA, you were going to lose him anyway.
Second round pick please. -

Other than we don't need another left D, I'd love Provorov. Maybe with Hughes on the right...
I think there's better moves, that fit our needs better... But we could do a lot worse.
He’d be great for Podkolzin as well. Having another Russian. LHD isn’t a priority but if we could unload OEL somehow it would be an upgrade.
-
I wonder if we could get Provorov from Philly? Boeser for him straight up? Part of a Miller trade? Would be great to buy low on him as a player.
-
Demko time. He will be the difference maker if we have one.

Veterans and pending UFA’s. History would say Pearson and Sutter, Halak also has to be up there in the veteran group. Motte is a pending UFA and should have value around the league. Depth Dman usually end up going for a decent price so Schenn could be in that mix as well, maybe Hamonic if we are lucky. I see the big names moving near the draft, unless someone offers us their shirt for Miller.

Can we terminate Sutters contact at this point? How was he even medically cleared to sign a contract? Hamonic as well, how were either of these guys signed in the off-season without due diligence being performed. That $4.15 million and two contact spots that could easily been producing for us.

I say you trade Miller if it looks like you’re out of the playoffs or just hanging on. Getting him all next year doesn’t help the situation and if he walks after that without a return? Or if you keep him and he has a down year like Petey or even gets injured? You have to sell on him at an all time high and even retain to get the most value out of him.
This is almost a no brainer where the state of the franchise is at. We need to rebuild the core around the 25 and under crowd with top prospect’s and draft capital. You can fill holes through free agency with the money left over and just prey JR and co are great at identifying free agents with good cap and term.
With the draft, I’d focus on RD and C with trying to attain as many picks as possible until we hit. Those two positions hold the most value in a trade and are the hardest pieces to acquire.

Latest rumour from Friedman links us to Ryan Bowness from the Pens.
He is their director of pro scouting. And yes he is Rick’s son. So that could potentially be three Pens execs moving over here...
It’s inevitable. You just hope since we are in a different situation with assets to actually trade for big value that these guys are great in that regard. Crosby/Malkin/Letang were never going anywhere and they were always adding to them. JR and co haven’t had a Miller/Boeser/Horvat and possibly Pettersson to work with in negotiations.

Oh goodness.
Didn’t know he was LD - totally thought the opposite. I blame the holiday hangover.
Back to the drawing board with mission impossible.
I’ve been stuck on the board for a long time. Don’t think we have drafted a competent RHD since Bieksa and before that Jiri Sleger. It’s time we draft our own stud in the first and keep doing it until we hit on one.

Just for discussion sake, I would also be 100% behind trading any of our better top 6 pieces (Miller, Boeser) and using that return to help acquire Chychrun this offseason.
That’s honestly the type of “rebuilding” move I’d love to see from Rutherford and co going forward.
I’m a big “build from the net out” believer and there won’t be many opportunities to find that young, elite partner for Hughes - that has to be the priority IMO.
They both play the same side unless one wants to switch. Also have OEL on that side. We should be focusing on the Right side RHD to play with Hughes. If you can get Chychrun for either one you jump all over it though.

Well, if we're looking at Allvin specifically, I don't see a resume there that indicates he should have the inside track over a lot of the other candidates being discussed. One can make the argument that there are reasons that us fans simply aren't privy to that may indicate to Rutherford that he is indeed the best person for the job, but that's pure speculation. We can only make judgements based off of the information we're aware of, and of the information we're aware of, the only thing on Allvin's resume that would would give me reason to believe he's the man for the job is his connection to Rutherford. Remove that connection, and I doubt he's on anyone's shortlist.
On a more generalized level, the fact that Rutherford is eyeing several people from his Pittsburgh staff indicates to me that our "exhaustive search" for a new front office staff wasn't quite as exhaustive as we were led to believe.
I’m interested to see with the fragile market here, if the owner and JR get wind of the fan base not to pleased with Pittsburgh’s office just coming over.
Would it force them to go out and hire a GM like McFarland or Tulsky etc outside of that organization (Pittsburgh). Obviously everything is hypothetical at this point but we all know who drives this team (the fans)

I’d personally love to see a Defence first approach from our new GM. Build from there out as they are also the highest return when it comes to assets as well. Seeing JR go after the likes of Gudbranson, Jack Johnson, Mathason scares the living bejesus out of me. Benning couldn’t evaluate talent on the back end either and it’s been the most frustrating position to build on the team since it has entered the league.
Who from Nashville is available? I’d argue they have been and are one of the best at evaluating Defensive Talent. I’m confident JR can take care of the forwards. -

As for cleaning house, yes, it absolutely was deserved. I don't care if the same team has looked better under Boudreau, we looked &^@#ing awful prior to him. Benning had years to bring in someone established and went with Desjardin's and Green, Desjardin's actually got more out of his roster than Green did, those rosters were rough.
Then you've gotta considering Benning's mistakes, his signings, trades, all of it. GM's have a shelf life, he'd been given plenty of time to figure things out and he wasn't able to. Same goes for AGM's and other executives who were involved in decision making. It was time to get fresh voices and ideas on board.
Pittsburg just went through this with Rutherford and it looks like the assistant’s there as well. Very reassuring. Wonder where they all end up????

Vancouver has the same amount of drafted players in their lineup right now as Carolina. 7 each. Drafting has not been the problem with Vancouver even though people want to keep saying this. The biggest issue with the Canucks over the last 8 years has been their coaching and their UFA signings.
5 were top 10 picks and the other two went 36/40 in the draft. Basically first rounders as both were projected there.

Last year Carolina had 5 representatives, while we had 4.
In 2019, they only had 2 (one which was a loan), while we again had 4.
Again, these rosters don’t dictate how well your team’s scouting is.
It’s usually a sign of progress as it is mostly a 20 year old tournament. Not only drafting was good, developmentally they were improving. Vancouver has been a bottom 5 team the last 8 years and Carolina have been one of the better teams. It would make sense for bottom 5 teams to have more players at the tournament.

The hint was from Brian Burke when JR was hired. The more time goes on, he hinted at personnel making a switch along with him and everyone assumed it was players. It’s looking more like executives was what he was hinting at and they all seem to be mentioned or coming over according to the big hitters in media. If Allvin ends up GM and the AGM role filled by another Penguins Executive, this will have all been staged from the beginning.
All this talk of waiting to meet in person and not on zoom but stating they want someone in the GM role by the end of the month just screams there wasn’t really a search. How do you hire someone to run your billion dollar investment with one meeting, even two? JR was promised he would be able to assemble his own team and it feels like he’s setting up his “boys” before he retires.
This is just not adding up!

I dont like the sound of that. So Rutherford was BSing about this whole process of having a 100 GMs as a candidate on a list and narrowing them to a group of 5 GMs when he knew it will be Alvin all the way? lmao and I hear he will hire another pittsburgh staff for the other AGM position. Definitely is feeling like Pittsburgh west if true.
Burke even quoted when JR was hired right away, that a few other people will be making the switch to Vancouver. Everyone speculated it was player personnel, but that makes no sense due to their needs/wants. Burke was hinting at a bunch of executives and that makes this whole situation staged from the very beginning. If Allvin ends up being the guy and one more AGM gets a role here, we didn’t interview very many people.

I hope its not true and McFarland gets the job. I mean if it was Alvin all along would he not have been hired couple of weeks ago?
It’s the franchise pulling the wool over our eyes. Rutherford is in charge now and before he retires he needs to try and setup his boys it sounds like.

That means absolutely nothing. Quality over quantity.
We could literally draft all the prospects from the entire Swiss team, but that doesn’t mean they make a good prospects pool.
I’d wager to bet, only one or two of them actually make it into the NHL.
You go with those odds every time. Carolina is the team I’d be looking at. Hearing they have 10 guys playing in the World Juniors means they have excellent Amateur and Pro scouts.

This win streak and how we close out the season will go a long way to attracting GM candidates, AGM candidates and free agents. I would wait till the off-season to hire/interview potential people and bank we go on a huge tear and are anointed a destination anyone would want to go to.
Patience might pay off here.

I agree, I’m also wondering about Futa as he is far from green and might not require as much mentorship. Out of the candidates listed he peaks my interest the most as he has been labeled the next “one” in the GM circles for some time.
