I actually don’t think Ottawa is going to be the pushover that many seem to think.

Short season, weird division, any of the Canadian teams can make the playoffs really.

Also, Ottawa is now pretty much a cap team if you include potential bonuses. They could make room by putting Gaborik on LTIR... but they are nowhere near a floor team.  In real dollars their salary expenditure isn’t much less than ours.

I keep trying to predict how the north division will wind up and I just can’t come to a conclusion. The division will be wide open this year. Gonna make for an entertaining season!

A lot of really talented players ("stars") in this tournament, obviously - but the ones I like to watch the most are players like Costmar (not just homer-speak here).

His goal(s) may be what gains him recognition (stayed engaged after that breakaway opportunity) - but for me he's one of those players that is a pleasure to watch because of what he does without the puck on his stick.  He really has a 'complete' nose for the game imo - always going to the right areas, very responsible - a level of hockey intelligence that not a lot of players possess, even the 'elite' talents.   A telling sign to see him on a scoring line but also taking key draws shorthanded.

His 'mental' game kind of reminds me of his number-sake (14) Burrows - who also had that continuous/unbroken concentration - always hounding the puck and taking the key territory on the ice.

The other guy that has stood out for me in a similar way thus far is the Russian (#13) Ponomarev (the Canes 53rd overall pick in this year's draft) - another really bright center imo who has a high end ability to read where to be/get to on the ice - first few shifts of the tournament were a cue to watch him - "who's that"? - intelligent and has that drive/intent to get to the heart of the play.    Love to watch players like this - tend not to be valued highly enough imo - don't tend to register as 'stars' but guys you win with.

Seems like a pretty common trait in most of the guys drafted during Jimbos tenure

Theres such a double when talking about our prospects here it's annoying AF. Any type of criticism towards one of our boys and you're automatically a troll.

Podkolzin is going to be a good nhl player. I dont doubt that. His motor is enough earn him a long career in the top 9. However I doubt he tops 50 points in a season imo.

This isnt my conclusion after 2 games. This is my conclusion after a year and a half.

    Flame away suckas

I totally agree with this outlook. I’ve been a watcher on this board for a long time, and feel generally as a poster you have a pretty balanced view on things. It’s just annoying to see the constant negativity. I’d rather see overly positive people than constant negativity. Astonishing to me that so many people choose to be negative like that on a consistent basis

I think people expect an offensive dynamo at the 10th pick.

Anyone who expects anything more than a 40 -50 pt 2 way forward is going to be disappointed in his play.

His attributes aren't going to show up on the score sheet. That said I don't see him being a good compliment to Petey or a 1st line player. He doesn't seem to understand how to create time and space with the puck or without it. He's great at quick passes and puck retrieval but he treats the puck like a bomb and doesn't seem to be able to find open spaces on the ice when he doesn't have it as he is more focused on staying close to defenders to try and get the puck back once it's lost.

Great as a workhorse and grinder with some skill. Could def see him complimenting Horvat well

I see the fit with Bo as well. I was more thinking he’d be a great guy to have with Petey as he seems to have some great puck retrieval, similar to Burrows with the twins. Just need him to be able to battle on the boards and get the puck to the primary puck handlers, in this case Petey. Don’t necessarily need him to be driving a line. That’s the good thing though, he seems to be a player that you plug in wherever he is needed.

All this talk of Podz being disappointing is....just wrong....

Open your eyes people ....watch the players not just the game....

Podz stole at least 4-5 pucks and turned the play the other way....he had the same # of hits...he came close to scoring 3-4 times over the 2 games and his linemates did not make any good passes to him...only the other way around.

Someone mentioned Landeskog as a comparable and that seems about right to me....

    Podz will be fine....

    Just watch....!

...try squinting and looking out of the corner of your eye if you can't see it already...!

It’s crazy to me that people can actually watch the kid play and say that he is disappointing. He plays exactly as advertised and that is the type of player we need playing in our forward group. I see him playing with Petey down the road and being a great compliment to his style of game

He is supposed to dominate his age group yet I haven’t even seen him today he been quiet and not for a good reason

No I mean what’s the correlation between Pod and Shirokov? Just seems like a weird comparison. By all accounts Pod has played as advertised. A hard nosed game with some skill to compliment any player he plays with.

Think you may have that backwards Jan.

OJ's defensive play is likely to be more mature/polished (while still needing development to get to solid 'NHL level').

He has great vision and passing, which allow him to move the puck forward consistently and leads to a lot of first, second and (dreaded) 'third' assists but his offense doesn't 'jump off the page'. He's not a 'dynamic' skater but has a smooth stride and good speed. Think calming, solid and smart... Something like Hamhuis or Lindholm.

Rathbone on the other hand while being a solid battler, will likely need a fair bit more polish on his defensive play before he's even ready for limited third line use IMO (but happy to be proved wrong). His compete, skating (dynamic!) and offense (passing and shot) though are quite good with a potentially high ceiling.

I’ve always thought Hamhuis was a good comparable. Hammer was a better defender (though I believe OJ can get there), but they both seem to make the right play majority of the time. Never get any spotlight either

I think we should wait and see what kind of salary demands Edler makes before deciding he should walk.

He’s still a very good player, and also a huge part of the leadership group. Guys like Juolevi and Rathbone are a long way away from proving they’re good enough to displace Edler.

Consider Edler’s past season. Even with Hughes taking over primary power play duties, Edler put up 33 points in 59 games. That’s 38th among all NHL defencemen. Decidedly “first pairing” numbers. And they look even better when you consider per game and per 60 rates (he then becomes top-30). And when you look at even strength rates, Edler was top-15 among NHL Dmen in 5v5 points/60. Getting close to #1D numbers, all considered, even while making way for Hughes to be the top dog on the PP and during prime offensive 5v5 minutes.

And last season wasn’t even a one off.

The previous year, Edler was 42nd in defensemen scoring and 25th in points/60.

The year before, he was 41st in defenceman scoring.

”Steady Eddie” has been steadily giving us “first pairing” quality play and production for the past several years, and he’s really showed very little decline in his play, since turning 30. In some ways, he’s actually stabilized and looks better now than he did during various stages of his late 20s (at least in terms of his overall performance and results—of course there are signs of aging in his game, and I won’t deny this).

I think Edler, barring a significant injury, has quite a few good years left in him, and if he’s willing to give us those years, on some relatively cheap short term deals, there’s no way I’d say no.

And even if Juolevi and Rathbone pass him (which I doubt happens any time soon), Edler is certainly capable of playing his off side. We have this belief that he can’t play the right side, because he struggled in the past. But that was also playing his off side in a top-4 role. If Rathbone and Juolevi are leapfrogging Edler, then Edler won’t be playing top-4. And he’s more than capable of playing 3RD, if needed. Especially now, as a cagey vet, versus back in the early 2010s, when he was a relatively young Dman playing some tough minutes on his off side with LHDs like Hamhuis and Ballard.

I think so long as it’s financially feasible, and he continues to perform well through his 30s, there’s a place for Edler on this team.

(Certainly, if he decides to test the open market, we can’t afford him. There’s no way we can match “market value” on a player like Edler. In that scenario, I’d agree that we’d have to let him walk. But hopefully, Edler is willing to take a discount.)

If you just took out Markstrom and inserted average goaltending last season, we were a lottery team.  He was that good for us.  We also got unusual career years from a lot of guys and great health from our top end players.  Lots went right for us to be a bubble team last year.

Take away Markstrom AND two of our starting 6D and not getting the health luck we did last year... and ya, barring everything falling into place for us next year, we will likely be a bottom feeder with the current roster.

I am not saying there isn’t time to make moves... but we can’t judge them unitl/if we make them.

Fair points. I just figure that our top guys are gonna continue to get better. Hopeful that guys like OJ can step in and fill the holes. Still plenty of time for Jim to improve the defense, I suppose only time will tell

The problem is that we were a fringe playoff WITH all those guys.  We are an almost definite lottery team right now unless Demko can manage a whole season of .970 save percentage rather than just a 3 game stretch.

It is one thing to see what you have in your young players, but throwing them all on defence means you aren’t planning on winning much.

Maybe this season is just a write off and they are hoping it is cancelled or significantly shortened.  There is a chance to get some depth back, especially on defence during true expansion draft when teams can’t protect guys.

I think it’s a bit of a stretch to call us a lottery team
