  1. Alright the Rangers are close to set for the season. Trading Tkachuk was a hell of a tough decision, but we needed better depth of assets with both a high degree of NHL-certainty as well as some high-end upside. Tippett's development is reminiscent of Tyler Toffoli, but we're hopeful for a little more even. Sharangovich is a wildcard, but he's made tremendous strides since leaving Belarus. Samuelsson was USA's captain and top D at WJC a couple years back. Maybe not much offensive upside, but just being on the ice 23 minutes a night will give him the opportunity to collect some points, plus his PIMs will help make up for those lost with Brady.

For Iafallo, we had a first plus prospect on the table from another team, but decided to go with the further-along Petruzzelli and take our chances flipping Granlund. Not really looking to move Granlund right now; probably closer to deadline.

Just need to add some depth pieces. Still looking to move O'Reilly - something along the lines of the Faulk and Iafallo trades would be good. Willing to take back bad salary.

Might be willing to move Brady Tkachuk. Preferred return would be two young players with upside (1F, 1D), an elite prospect and a first.

  4. The Rangers are running out of cap space and need to be picky about moving cap dumps from here on. Prefer offers like the the Faulk deal or impending Iafallo deal where I take players at higher cap who I might still flip at the deadline, or at least someone who can still contribute.

  5. projected 2021/22 lineup:

    Bjorkstrand - Barkov - DeBrincat

    Vrana - Backstrom - Brown

    Gusev - Foligno - Thompson

    Lazar -Turris - Gagner

    Leivo / Vesey / Eklund / Chmelevski / Somppi

    Toews - Severson

    Goligoski - Walker

    Edmundson - Fabbro

    Mitchell / Kukan / Clarke /Benn / Walsh / Borgen / Durzi

    Blackwood

    Smith

    Vejmelka/Shepard/Soderblom

We fully expect to challenge for the division in the regular season. May be an easy out for a road team come playoffs, but we think we can find a way to be a contender by '22/'23.

Any of the depth players, are available to teams needing to fill out their rosters. Will take B prospects and the like.

Goligoski, Edmundson, Smith will be on the market throughout the season. Starting ask is a 1st for Goligoski, a 2nd for Edmundson, and a 1st for Smith.

  6. Joakim Kemell is this year's Lysell or Perfetti. Smaller guys with superlative talent but not exactly coach's dreams. The way they just attack opponents one on one with reckless abandon. They're not bat$&!# crazy like a Stranges or Trikozov, but will need some coaching and might take time developing. But man oh man, could Kemell be the best of the bunch?

Starting to think Lekkerimaki will emerge as a top tier (using that term loosely) prospect. He reminds me of a pinball machine the way he darts around the offensive zone. Man is he quick. But is he a Hagelin or is he an Ehlers?

  7. Also - things are heating up on Iafallo. A couple offers on the board that are pretty close, but nothing that gets it done. Need a 2022 first plus a high end prospect or young players with some upside.

Hasn't been much interest in O'Reilly yet. We need to move him this year as he's already 30. Best fit would probably be a championship contender who feels their window is shrinking - a p/g center and playoff performer at 5 million for two more years and then four years at 8. Could be a huge addition if you're looking for a couple more big runs and then to start a rebuild.

TRADE: The Carolina Hurricanes have made a trade with the New York Rangers.

    To NYR:

And the Faulk trade is now complete. Really happy with how this turned out actually. Vegas was the only serious suitor for Faulk, and Lambos and Gaudreau were the only pieces they were willing to move that really excited us. But they were looking to dump Arvidsson's contract and we were able to get a little creative by using max retention on Faulk to get get Arvidsson at a more flippable contract. Was expecting to have to wait until the deadline to get something worthwhile but when I realized Khusnutdinov might be available we jumped to get it done.

  9. Brad Lambert has been off to a pretty disappointing start to the season. Played around 13 mins his first two games, down to 11 last game. No points. I had him ranked 3rd coming into the season, but very tentatively.

Lambert falls in the category of post-Barzallian forwards. Young players try to emulate their heroes, and when people saw what Kane and Panarin were able to do together in 2016, it was somewhat revolutionary - previously the hashtag corsi game was all about controlling possession down low and cycling high to the Ds. Being a "perimeter player" has always been a pejorative; but seeing elite forwards dancing around playing keepaway high and on the outside, controlling possession and manipulating defenses, spawned a bit of a new breed of forwards focused on skating agility, stickhandling and passing skills, utilized in particular ways: starting with Barzal, and then Alex Texier, Tim Stuetzle, William Eklund, and now Brad Lambert. There's also guys like Jean-Luc Foudy, Aatu Raty and Samu Tuomaala who have the skillset and attempt a similar style, but I'm not sure have the hockey IQ to execute at higher levels.

I recall debating a lot about Raymond vs. Stuetzle in their draft year. In some ways similar but drastically different players. Like Barzal, I suspect players like Stuetzle and Eklund will dominate possession and scoring chance generation stats every year, but that their point totals will vary significantly, depending on whether they have linemates who can keep up with them and finish on the chances they create from the outside. Whereas players like Raymond, or in this draft Savoie or Miroshnichenko, who drive the puck to the inside and attack defenders one on one, will create their own chances and their own luck.

Bit of a tangent, but back to Lambert - it takes elite hockey IQ and stick skills to be like Barzal and Stuetzle. Lambert has the skating abilities, without question, and he's had all the tools to be able to play this style superbly at the junior level, but he's yet to show much at all at the pro level. I do think he's closer to Stuetzle or Barzal than he is to Tuomaala or Raty, but unless he figures it out and rights the ship very soon, he's going to start freefalling down the draft boards.

The San Jose Sharks have signed the following free agents:

    Kyle Turris - 1 year, $1.000M
    Will Calverley - 2 years, $1.600M ($0.800M AAV)

    Colten Ellis - 3 years, $2.550M ($0.850M AAV)

    Arvid Soderblom - 3 years, $2.625M ($0.875M AAV)

    Jesper Eliasson - 3 years, $2.400M ($0.800M AAV)

    @HighOnHockey

Wow. We are over the moon right now. Will never forget Brian Burke on European and college free agents: it's like finding a wallet on the street. Costs nothing in assets or cap. Calverly had a monstrous (albeit short) NCAA season at 22. Colten Ellis went 23-1 with a 1.78 and .926 in the Q at 19. Soderblom was the second best SVP in SHL last year at 21.

We've been pulling out all the stops this summer to try and shore up the mid and long term future in goal beyond Blackwood. Weren't expecting to land all three of those guys, but I'd say we're pretty set now.

  11. Alright, now that some trades are posted, I want to update my trade block:

Viktor Arvidsson is available. 4.75 for the next two years and then one year at 6. Won't be offering any further retention at this time. Ask for this season will be two 2nd round picks or equivalent prospects.

Ryan O'Reilly is available. He's a point per game player on a playoff team. 6 years left at 8 million. Willing to take on max retention for the next two seasons. Ask is a player under 23 with upside, a 2022 first and high-end prospect.

Will probably hold on to Gostisbehere for this season to let a year tick off that contract and see if he recovers some value, but feel free to make a creative offer involving another bad contract or something. He was a half point per game D last year, so I am still expecting to find a way to get positive value out of him.

And finally for now, Alex Iaflallo is available. Have already had a handful of inquiries and two somewhat serious offers. Ask is a 2022 first plus another first or high-end prospect.

  13. Well, I guess I'm an Omsk fan now lol. It's the only hockey going right now, but I've watched all three of their (VHL) games so far, or at least Miro's and Trikozov's shifts. I've been following Miroshnichenko's career for it feels like years now, and when I started watching him with Yastreby last year I was immediately blown away by Trikozov as well.

I've been talking about the need for Miro to learn and prove himself at higher levels, and his first game in the VHL was a very rough outing - he mostly looked lost, timid. His progression in the next two games has been tremendous. Second game he at least looked involved most shifts, and occasionally made an impact. In those first two games he played between 16 and 17 minutes; today he played over 20 minutes (as a 17 year old in the 8th or 9th best pro league in the world) and was making a significant impact almost every shift. I can only hope he starts to bring this level of play with some consistency, but today he looked like the raging bull I've always thought he could be.

Trikozov only played 10 minutes the first game, but in the second game he came unleashed. Just an absolute monster. Played over 17 minutes with 6 shots and at least 3 takeaways. In today's game he came back down to earth a bit. He still seems to make at least one stupid overconfident play with the puck every period, but it's a testament to just how talented he is that his coaches keep playing him (15 minutes today) even at this level. Really tough to say where he might get drafted, but I'm starting to think he'll find his way into the top 15 or 20, and if not some team could get a franchise-altering steal. Speaking of steals, here's his three from the other day (#8 in White):

Just like to thank you in person for your 2022 draft thread.

    Great resource tool.

Lol yeah man, I live for that $&!#. Looking forward to actually have something on the line with my scouting. Guess I'll have to be a bit more cautious about posting lists now though.

  15. Well the regular season is up and running over in Russia. Miroshnichenko started the season on the top line for the new VHL expansion team Omskie Krylia.

Russia has always used the European over the North American style of league tier system, where the minor league teams aren't farm systems but are their own organizations and the top teams every year move up to the higher tier league, while the worst teams move down. But in the past few years it is looking the VHL is more and more becoming a feeder league for the KHL. So anyway, Avangard Omsk added a VHL affiliate. Avangard is one of the top teams in KHL so it would have been very tough for Miroshnichenko to make the big club, so this is a huge blessing both for him and for scouts trying to get a read on him.

There are some whispers going around questioning Miroshnichenko's hockey IQ, but I think it is important to note that the kid played just 16 games in the U17 league, 16 games in the U18 league, and then 20 games in the MHL (U20) over the past couple years. As I've been saying, he is at his best playing an in-your-face power game - protecting pucks, leaning on guys, bouncing off checks, driving the net, shooting through sticks. But for as long as I've been watching him the problem has always been that he's also remarkably talented, and has never been challenged enough at lower levels so has been able to rely mostly on his skill. Now in the VHL he's going to have to learn to play the right way. As I said, he was thrown right to the wolves, starting his pro career on the top line of a weak team, but it was a rough night for him. Which is great, this is exactly what he needs is a bit of an ego check to push him in the right direction, as it's a lot harder and more painful work to play the way he needs to to be at his best. This was the highlight of the night for him (#63 in white; took him until late in the third to start to get the right idea):

I dunno, Glen Murray was a little too slow to be a Pods comparison I feel.

Lehtinen is closer I think, and guy was an absolute legend. Would be great if he had the anywhere near the same shutdown capabilities

I'm kind of wondering if Shanahan would be a good comparison. Both wingers playing on the opposite of their hand, similar size now, that high level of competition, decent shot and nastiness/physicality. Needless to say, I'm stoked for this guy.

Yeah I didn't think Murray was such a great comparison, just the name that kept popping up in my mind. Don't really see the Lehtinen comparison as he was just 6', and the first thing anyone thinks of when they think of Lehtinen is Selke. That's a tall order for Podkolzin to live up to. I thought about Shanahan too, but as with Brady Tkachuk, I don't think Podkolzin has that kind of edge. He does have some edge, even fights occasionally, but nothing like those two as far as I'm aware.

Since you mentioned the skating, what about Brian Rolston? Not as hulking as Murray, but dude could wheel, and was a heck of a two-way forward in his own right. Seem to recall he was near the top of the league in SHG every year.
