We have a trade to announce...

To LAK - William Borgen, Alex Steeves, LAK 2022 3rd Round Pick

    To SJS - Carson Soucy

A little nervous but happy to finally get this done. Our director of pro scouting has been high on Soucy since we joined the league. His name came up a few times during Larkin negotiations but there were other players we liked better so it didn't work out. We continued to badger LA about him since then, and now with Walker out for the season it was vital to get some help on D, but we also needed contract term so we're not wasting assets on a rental in case we miss playoffs. I guess you could say we had extra motivation to do it now because of the Walker injury, and the Kings had a little extra motivation with Soucy's healthy scratching, so it was a bit of a perfect storm.

LOL....I seem to tug on you the wrong way at times.........did not mean to

Just everything I have read has Luneau ranked quite a bit lower than Jiricek in the early rankings

But as I said a long time ago.......I like your takes

HAHA no, nothing to do with you. You can ask anyone, I just prefer being straightforward over being polite, and do not mind offending people or being disliked.

I try to watch as much of the prospects as I possibly can, but there's just not enough time in the day to see every one as much as I'd like. Obviously the players I get the most invested in and advocate for are the players I've seen the most. I never quite know what to say when I say "I'm not too high on that player because haven't seen them enough" and then people tell me I'm wrong. "OK?" Sure, could be. I will try to watch more and reassess.

In other news, there's a 5 Nation U18 tournament coming up starting November 8th. That'll be a great opportunity to get a looks at a lot of different prospects for this draft, and pick some players from there I'd like to focus my attention on going forward.

Funny how you don't like those big defensive Dmen

I am not saying you are wrong, just an observation

You do not like David Jiricek's skating?........I won't take issue with your observations, as it is early and you do make a great argument

I will watch, as the season goes.........it will be interesting to see where everyone lies in June

a long time from now! Too bad we do not have a 2nd this year!

I love this topic....thanks for the response!

    Cheers!

... Not sure what you're on about here. There's a one inch height difference between Jiricek and Luneau. Not sure where you think I said I didn't like Jiricek? Said I haven't seen him much and there's a defenseman I've seen more and like better so far. I was also Mukhamadullin's biggest fan. He's 6'4 and a pure shutdown defenseman. I had Kaiden Guhle ranked right about where he went. My not liking Brayden Schneier has less to do with stylistic preference and more to do with an opinion on an individual player.

Further to my last comment to @HighOnHockey

I think this is a great year to focus in on a high end RHD.

It does remain to be seen, if we will be close to him, as we may have a little lower pick

But this is a year, where you move up and target a player, just like NYR did with Brayden Schneider a couple of years ago.

There are many ways to move up. "IF" you have a willing partner, but you have to give to get!

Yeah, I recall there was a lot of people pushing for RHD last year, and I was pretty adamant that it was dumb. There were how many RHD qualified to go in the top 15 or 20. Clarke, Ceulemans, Heimosalmi? Not many anyway.

This would probably be the year that it would make more sense to go after an RHD. I've got Nemec top 5, Seamus Casey, Tristan Luneau, David Jiricek, top 15. Elias Salomonsson, Ryan Chesley, Ty Nelson all probable firsts. Kasper Kulonummi, Micahel Mastrodomenico, Vinny Borgesi should go in the first couple rounds. And I'm not all that up on all the Canadian prospects yet with no season for some leagues last year, but will be more. Should be opportunities to get a couple RD you like without having to exhaust picks to move up or risk missing a player you like better to move down.

I haven't seen a ton of Jiricek. Good player though. Thought of him more as defensive defenseman until I saw him run a powerplay. Not bad. Not sure he'll ever be a first unit guy in the NHL, but he could help an NHL powerplay.

If it's an eventual D partner for Quinn Hughes we're after I think the ideal player would be Tristan Luneau. I talked last year about how I like Colorado's idea of adding a guy like Toews to play with Makar and Girard. Hampus Lindholm will be a great partner for Drysdale should Anaheim re-sign him. Same for Severson and Ty Smith. If you've got a big hulking defenseman in there who can't move the puck, Quinn is going to get stuck in his zone and we know nothing good happens then. Guys like Toews, Severson, Weegar, Lindholm, etc, are excellent partners to these new age defenseman, because they can cover a good share of the defensive duties, but they can also skate with your Quinn Hughes or Makar and transition the puck in their own rights. The less time Hughes spends in his own zone and the more time on the attack, the better. Obviously.

That's what I think Tristan Luneau could be. Strong skater, 6'2, separates pucks from bodies, releases pressure quickly and effectively, and he's an elite transition defenseman for his age group.. Something like a Jake Sanderson, but not as elite a skater. This early I can only say with much confidence that he should be in the 10-25 range, but personally I would take him on the earlier side of that. Of course the problem still remains you're looking at 1-3 years before he makes it to the NHL, and another 2-3 years beyond that to develop into an impact NHL defenseman you'd want playing with Hughes.

    Just spit balling here

But do you think Miller gets you Severson

and then take the 1st and trade it for a Miler Replacement

Kind of a reversal of what I intended, but Garland kind of made me think of it........

Just a question........interested in your thoughts on it

It's actually not a terrible idea at all. Could work for both teams. Both players about the same age, both have two years left on their current contracts. New Jersey could use some grit up front to try to establish themselves as a playoff team. Only problem is, Vancouver could also use some grit up front. The easy answer would be like you said, swap Miller for Severson and then use the first to go out and add some sort of Miller replacement. But the problem is, if a player like that is available, why wouldn't New Jersey just go after that same player instead of giving up Severson to get Miller? I guess we're assuming Miller is the superior player to this hypothetical other player, so maybe New Jersey wants to go all in. But they would need to be pretty damn sure that Ty Smith is ready to emerge as a feasible replacement to Severson. I dunno, it seems like a long shot, but within the realm of possibility.

Hi Guys.....good question, but I want you all to determine the player and his salary

Personally, I am asking the same question

    Manson - Anahiem

    Savard - Montreal

    Severson - NJersey

Are these guys good enough, with a low enough cap hit? I don't know! Is the offer worth the return?

Is there someone better that fits under the cap?

Weegar would be another perfect fit, but is probably pretty well untouchable. Maybe Jokiharju or Sean Walker would be attainable?

Hell no to Savard. Manson - nah. Severson - &^@# yeah. Would be pretty much the perfect fit alongside Quinn Hughes. Good luck getting him out of New Jersey though, but maybe they think he's expendable with the addition of Hamilton. Would cost a lot more than just a first though.

  8. Dear Lord, Sean Walker now too.

Backstrom, Vrana, Toews, Foligno, Lazar, Smith, Blackwood, Walker. Someone could start a pretty good team out of our injured players. Thank goodness for Oliver "the superstar" Bjorkstrand. Just trying to stay within reach of a playoff spot until we can get to some semblance of healthy.

This matter is subjective though. I think he's a good player, strong down the middle of the ice, PPG player in the AHL, 12 pts last year in in 49 games which is good production for a bottom six player. As a 4C, right-handed, 25-years old is he better than a guy like Gaudette? I'd say they're both around the same, Gaudette's done more in the NHL by a long-shot. The point is, I think he's a good player. You don't and that's fine, you don't need to be a dick about it.

Being straightforward and even blunt does not equate to being a dick. It is not really subjective, or at least certainly not to the extent you're implying. Sure, there is always some room for evaluation and interpretation. But there are definitely better and worse players. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but some opinions are better than others.

Sorry this is irrelevant to your post I quoted just wanted to acknowledge you for last year.

Must be nice seeing you were right about cole sillinger! You were higher on him then anyone last year good job mate!

I clearly don't mind pumping my own tires, but I do appreciate the recognition. I've been working at it for years and have finally had some proud scouting moments in the past couple years. Had Raymond 2nd and was one of his biggest fans in his draft year. People on HF told me I was just looking for attention and no way should he be ahead of Byfield. Even I didn't think he'd be at this level so soon though. Had Mukhamadullin at 17th and they said I was being cute. Was a bit late to the party on Eklund but had him 1st overall in my final list. He's looking ok so far.

Some questionable calls from last draft though. Wasn't big on Edvinsson or McTavish, and both are looking to prove me wrong so far.

What I'm more pleased with than seeing prospects I like succeed though, is when I'm able to identify and correct false narratives around prospects, as with Lambos and Sillinger this past draft in particular. Early on in their draft years there was this narrative established somehow around Lambos that he was a stable, unexciting defensive defenseman, and Sillinger was this one-dimensional goal-scorer. I had already seen both since the U17 and knew those things to be patently false. I was seeing Lambos compared to Pietrangelo while I compared him to P.K. Subban. A remarkably talented two-way defenseman who was a force in both the offensive and defensive zones, but with serious flaws in his decision-making and risk-manaement. And With Sillinger I saw an exceptional defensive center, pro-style player, and heart-and-soul competitior, in addition to a goal-scorer, a la Joe Paveslki or Chris Drury.

Can't wait to see what happens with this year's draft.

  11. This is stupid. "The NHL is the best league for developing NHL players." Yeah, no $&!#. Wouldn't it be nice if teams could develop all their players in the NHL. This article seems to take it that player development is the only consideration. But if a player isn't good enough to play in the NHL then they don't get to play in the NHL, too bad for their development. And the reasoning behind the conclusion is nonsense. All he's really showing is that if a player exhibits that he isn't good enough to play in the NHL (and so has to play in the AHL), then his long-term likelyhood of playing in the NHL is lower. Uhhhh, yeah. Players that are good enough to make the NHL are probably gonna be more likely to be NHL players.

    Just my two cents, but…

Theres a difference between venting, and slagging/disrespecting the game that many of us have spent years playing, and being invested in. Through good times, and bad.

Hate to play the this card, but the essence of our game is to imitate reality.

If an NHL GM came out in public and said “I don’t care” or “I’m tanking” , they simply wouldn’t have a job anymore.

Curt busts his ass keeping things afloat around here, and if you don’t like it, you’re free to leave peacefully.

No need to leave with any sort of unnecessary disrespect.

    Preach, brother.

You've got a number of GMs who havent done a goddam thing in the year I was here. Nothing.

But because I can be honest and embrace a top ten pick because the team I inherited had a brutal lack of depth and prospects, I'm TANKING.

The discussion among the executive board of cowards is a stupid thing to even mention because no one except Sharpshooter bothered to ask me what I meant by "tanking." Pathetic cowardly $&!#.

But yes, CURT ISN'T THE ONLY ONE WITH POWER, YOU ARE A POWERFUL FANTASY EXEC AS WELL!

  14. We decided to sort our prospects into three tiers to make trade negotiations easier on ourselves and potential trade partners. A prospects are players we think are good bets to be NHL players in some capacity, and maybe even have some upside. These guys we'd only move for a significant piece coming back. B prospects are players who could maybe at least be journeymen / fringe/ depth NHLers at some point. These guys could be involved in lower level trades involving minor leaguers or fringe players, or perhaps as balancers for later draft picks in larger trades. C prospects are players we don't expect will likely ever see NHL action. If you see a name there that interests you, offer half a bag of pucks. Also I tried to put them roughly in order within each tier.

    A

    William Eklund

    Brandt Clarke

    Fyodor Svechkov

    Ville Koivunen

    Roby Jarventie

    Sasha Chmelevski*

    Karel Vejmelka

    Sean Durzi

    Reilly Walsh

    Ian Mitchell

    Arvid Soderblom

    Ethan Haider

    Tristan Lennox

    Will Calverley

    Vadim Zherenko

    Otto Somppi

    B

    Alex Steeves

    Colten Ellis

    Timur Bilyalov

    Ben McCartney

    Dmitri Voronkov

    Hunter Shepard

    Yevgeni Oksentyuk

    Topias Vilen

    Owen Pederson

    Teemu Turunen

    Jesper Eliasson**

    C

    Hudson Elynuik

    Luke Green

    Alec Rauhauser

    * That final ten minutes of WJC gold medal game is forever burned in my brain. Never giving up on this kid until he's pried away from my cold, dead hands.

** Lol, Eliasson is not looking like our best signing so far. I think I over-rated ICEHL a little bit.
