  1. I'm actually curious .. if anyone knows... what government jurisdictions the canucks would be governed by. Provincal labour code and worksafe BC only applies to BC companies whose employees are stationary. However, Canucks are cross-provincal so they would fall under federal jurisdiction in Canada but, not sure if it extends when playing the US? I would assume all the laws they need to follow are Canadian Federal labour laws. In that case the employee (Pearson) can't sue his employer (Canucks). It's no fault just like the new ICBC system
  2. Good thing for canucks doctors are in Canada. Free health care but pretty much impossible to sue for malpractice
  3. Yup I dont think they are. 5 minutes after I made this post, VC posted Donnies update. I really didn't think his injury was that bad. Feel bad for the player
  4. But that's not new to the industry is it? coaches always get let go and salary paid Horvat was a minimal retention for a couple months to orchestrate a trade Virtanen was a must I know our ownership has it's faults but at least they are willing to spend money
  5. Mods - feel free to merge this into another thread if you feel it doesn't deserve it's own thread. I wanted to put together an outline of how our cap and roster looks for next year. This is in lieu of using CapFriendly because, CapFriendly to me is sometimes inaccurate. if you take a quick glance at CapFriendly it will tell you we are 956k below the cap but, with only 16 players on our roster for next season. This is because: total roster size only includes players that are on the current active roster and signed for 23/24 Includes the cap hit for players on IR/LTIR but, does not include them as part of the roster size Includes the salary of players that are on the active roster but, will most likely not be on the roster if players return from IR/LTIR. i.e. we currently have 13 F on the roster but, if Mikheyev and Pearson where to be activated, 1 or 2 of those forwards would be sent down which would potentially decreases our projected cap hit for next season Therefore, i put together the following illustration that simply shows the Canucks are 956k under the cap going into next season but, can field a team of 12F, 6D, and 2G with the 956k in extra cap space available for an extra F or D. My post isn't meant to make any conclusion on if we're in a good or bad spot cap wise. Just to simply illustrate or current situation and start a conversation on people's suggestions on how we can realistic free up cap space. My observations are that: Canucks can ice a team but, We have RFA's that we won't be able to sign (Kravtsov, Hoglander, Bear, Dermott) No room to add Free Agents So here's my assumptions on what the Canucks will do to free up some cap space Buy-out Tucker Poolman if he comes back from LTIR, which will open 2M in cap space for next 2 seasons. If he doesn't come back we'll continue to have an extra 2.5M in space. Trade Tanner Pearson (no retention) or Buy-Out The above two moves will free up between 3.8M to 5.2M in cap space for next season depending on if Pearson is traded or bought out We would carry some penalties going into 24/25 (500k to 1.4M), 25/26 (1M) and 26/27 (1M) but, i think these are extremely manageable penalties to take on for 24/25 and onward when bad contracts come off the book and salary cap should increase. This is worth it in my opinion free up 3.8M to 5.2M in cap space for next season that will bring our total cap space to 4.8M to 6.2M without trading any of Myers, OEL, Garland or Boeser So what do i think the Canucks will do with that extra cap space? Hoglander will be traded if Garland or Boeser can't be traded. I think they'll be looking for a player in return such as a defensive center. Maybe find a team that needs a bit more offensive help than defensively. I don't see Hoglander being effective in a bottom 6 role, and I don't think he'll be able to leap frog Kuzy, Beau, Podz, Kravtsov, Garland, Boeser, Mikheyev for a spot on the top 2 lines. Considering they just traded for Kravtsov i think he'll be a priority to re-sign Dermott they will trade at draft for picks Bear will be traded at the draft for picks in my opinion. I think the Canucks will try to sign a D in free agency, or maybe they feel Filip Johanssen is ready to join the roster. I just don't see a spot for him long-term and he reestablished some value this season and is a RFA. Sell-high candidate what are you guys thoughts?
  6. I agree more pieces are needed but, the draft is still an option. Plenty of "big pieces" impact players were drafted in the 5-10 range ... i mean look at our very own Petey, Hughes ... and ex-canuck Horvat. Draft position doesn't always translate to success ... and Tampa Bay is a perfect example of this. I just like to have some faith in the current management group because, they've shown an ability of being good talent evaluators and have shown an ability to quickly improve our development program. Some of our current prospects have aggressively increase their stock this past year under new systems. I just think finding your superstar players is the hardest thing to do in the NHL and the Canucks have those. Building out the rest of the team is not easy but, there's definitely more options available to find 2nd and 3rd line forwards as well as #3 to #6 defenseman. If they are right on Hronek than the Canucks will have two very good defenseman anchoring 2 of the 3 pairs and now will need to focus on finding the complimentary piece for both. The way i look at it when you compare today to 1.5 years ago when Alvin/JR came on board we are trending in a positive direction in many aspects of the entire Organization.
  7. Can you give us some examples of teams that managed to build a cup winning team solely because of the draft? Last i checked teams like Colorado (McKinnon, Makar, Landeskog, Rantanen), Pittsburgh (Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Fleury), Washington (Ovechkin, Backstrom, Kuznestov, Carlson), Chicago (Kane, Toews, Keith), all used the draft to find their superstars but, their championship supporting cast was not acquired through draft. Heck even Edmonton who hasn't won a cup .. but, if they do ... used the draft to find McDavid, Draisatl and RHN but, their entire supporting cast has been acquired through other means. Boston is also taking the same approach . .they are not relying on the draft to sustain a winner. Dallas found some gems in Robertson, Hiskanen and Ottengier but, they are using trades and free agency to build around them. The Canucks used the draft to find their core superstars (Petey, Hughes, Demko). Now it's time to maximize those assets by finding the right supporting cast.
  8. The best GM in the league who can't do no wrong but, he has a whiff rate of 90% on all his draft picks in Tampa. Including absolute terrible draft record in the 1st and 2nd rounds. I encourage you to look at his draft record as GM if you have not already. So yes his approach may or may not pay off. He is gambling that all these drafts picks he is accumulating will pay off. The reason Yzerman is taking this approach is because he realizes he doesn't have the core superstars on his team to compete - so he is using the lottery to try to find those ... the Canucks already have those. When he went to Tampa Bay - he already had Stamkos and Hedman. And once there, he made moves geared to re-tooling and winning. he also gave out a bunch of bad contract (Callahan, Gourde, Johnson, etc), bad trades, and bad draft choices along the way. He got lucky by finding gems in the 4th and 5th rounds and for Vasilevsky to develop in an all-world goalie. And i stand by my assumption that he got lucky with his draft picks in the later rounds because his draft picks in the first 3 rounds were not very good... so it's not logical to assume he was an awesome talent evaluator. on another note ... Yzerman built a Stanley Cup winning team by striking gold in the later rounds ... well the canucks have plenty of late round picks The point i'm trying to make is that i do no understand why people view Yzerman as the gold standard ... is it because he won Stanley Cups in Tampa Bay as GM? No he didn't, they actually won Stanley Cups after he left...
  9. Problem is the Canucks were never and they can not be as bad as Columbus (due to injuries), Chicago, Anaheim, Arizona, San Jose. Those teams are terrible ... we have superstar/borderline superstars on our team. If we want to compete for bottom spot in the league than we need to get rid of Petey, Hughes, Demko, Miller, Kuzy etc. It was never realistic for the Canucks to be bottom 3 team in the league.... so i really don't understand why people keep getting so frustrated - a lot of "experts" picked the Canucks to make the playoffs this year. If we finish bottom 10 at least we still have a chance of winning the lottery. Bottom 3 finish does not equal a guarantee on Bedard.
  10. I too want better lottery odds but, i still get happy when the canucks win. That's what being a fan for decades does to a person. I really hope we get some luck on our side and a team like Vancouver, Columbus, Philly or Montreal ends up winning the Bedard sweepstakes. The rest of the bottom dwelling teams are intentionally putting a bad product on the ice to increase their chance of winning the lottery by a few percentage points ... not a good look for the league in my opinion, and I can't get behind that.
  11. Nobody will know exactly unless you're part of the team and room. However, every single report thats come out officially has his team mates going on record they love Miller. Bruce even went on record that he loved Miller post-coaching change. Miller is a gamer. Winners love going to battle with gamers and emotion. I mean is it coincidence guys like Kucherov, McKinnon, Marchand, ROR, Crosby, Ovechkin, etc are the guys who have been hoisting cups? They are no bull** emotional type of guys. Horvat strikes me as the type of guy who team mates loved but, couldn't motivate them. Too quiet, too polite, too level headed honestly. Don't get me wrong I loved the player. Is it coincidence that the Canucks are playing harder since he got traded?
  12. Agreed. Need balance on the team.
  13. No doubt Yzerman is an accomplished GM but I wouldn't call him a great talent evaluator. He did strike gold with Point, Cirrelli , Palat, Kucherov and Vasilevsky but, other than those picks his draft selections as a GM of TB were questionable. He also picked a lot of the guys I listed below before he selected Kucherov, Cirelli etc.. so there's a bit of luck to getting the guys he did too. With 1st and 2nd round picks he selected DeAngelo, Connolly, Drouin, Koekkoek, Namensnistikov, Blujus, Hart, Erne, Macleod, Mason, Spencer, Stephen's, Yan, Katchouk, Raddysh, Howden, Hajek, Volkov, Fortier. Overall about 50 of the 60 draft selections he made turned out as complete busts and alot of those were high picks. He has also made questionable trades and given questionable extensions to players he than had to pay assets to move out (I.e. Callahan and etc). Point I'm trying to make no GM will ever be perfect. So there's no reason to think that maybe Yzerman undervalued Hronek.
  14. Yes but Middleton , Spurgeon, Brodin, Addison, Merrill and Faber is still a solid D... middle of the pack? I don't think they give up on Addison, defenceman take longer to develop and he still has potential. Zucs may be resigned but not for 6 million so it'll still open up cap space next year with his contract expiring. The year after , Parise and Suters atrocious penalty disappears. Guerin has done a good job navigating the buyout penalties All im saying is they'll be an interesting team to watch. And once their penalties and bad contracts come off the book, they will have plenty of cap space and a relatively good core with Kaprizov, Boldy, Brodin, Gustavsson, etc still in their prime.
  15. I agree with above except i dont' think they need to re-sign/replace Dumba. They still have a solid D as of today and Brodin is on LTIR. Brodin's return will essentially replace Dumba next year. They'll probably sign Gustavsson, Addison and Gaudreau to 1 or 2 year bridge deals because they don't have much of a choice and try to make those 3 guys fit under 10 million total per year total. That will leave them with 2.3 million for 4-5 guys which is not enough ... they'll have to shed some salary but, the last 4-5 holes they have to plug will be in their bottom six. II think they'll take a step back next year but, afterwards money will start coming off the books fast with Zucs, Fleury, Parise/Suter penalty, etc It's one team i'll be interested to watch this off-season.
  16. they had 8 mil of cap space for this year prior to this trade and projected for 12 million next year they are not in as bad of a position as we were led to believe.
  17. I really like this move for the Wild + what they did this TDL Freed up some space to re-sign Gauthier, Addison and Gustafsson, while adding pending UFA's to help them this year. Good job Wild - and you built a playoff contender without tanking
  18. I personally appreciate the fact we have a management group that's focused on building a winner and now banking on stacking draft picks that may or may not turn out, and lose Petey Quinn Demko Kuzy etc.... not to mention tarnish our reputation as a losing franchise even more. Alvin and JR are managing to find ways to add legitimate talent to this organization since they joined despite being capped out and not having many assets (Kuzy, Hronek, Aman, Joshua, Lazar, Kravstov, Wolanin, Beauvellier, Bear) and some potential prospects (Johansson, Raty and D Petey). I trust their ability to evaluate talent (which Benning and past regimes lacked.. i.e. Gudbranson, Del Zotto, Vey Beartschi, Grandlund, and the list goes on and on). We already have our superstars and play drivers... we need a strong supporting cast now. That can 100% be acquired through trades, free agency, and screwed trades (I.e. Bear, Kravtsov) Plus people act as we still don't have a chance at Bedard. If we win the lotto and get Bedard... everyone is going to be pushing for the team to compete. At that point nobody is going to be crying about this Hronek trade.
  19. I personally think so. I feel the NHL is currently LHD quality-heavy and there's not that many quality RHD in the NHL. Makar, Karlsson, Fox, Dahlin, McAvoy, Doughty, Seider, Carlson and Petriangelo are the top tier. But, Karlsson, Carlson, Petriangelo, and Doughty probably only have a couple more seasons in them of maintaing their superstar level of play. But, after that I feel Hronek is in the same class as Dougie Hamilton, Ekbald, Montour, Dobson, Andersson, and Seth Jones. I personally feel Hronek is ahead of those guys overall and the all the advance metrics are in his favour as well. To be determined of course.
  20. The Canucks have - Top 10 Forward (who's a center) in the league who is 24 - Top 10 Defenseman in the league who is 23 - Potential Top 10 Goalie in the league who is 27 - Added a Top 10 RHD in the league who is 25 Not many teams that are outside of the playoff picture can say that about their team. The Canucks are setting themselves up to compete once majority of their bad contracts come off the back at the end of next season. OEL is truly the only long term anchor contract. I really think we're going in the right direction here
  21. that's a pessimistic take arguably the Canucks have the two best players / borderline superstars (Petey and Quinn) out of all the bottom dwellers (ARZ, ANA, CHI, SJ, DET, NSH, STL, MTL, etc). I personally would not compare the Canucks to those teams as we're in different situation and those teams are still looking for their Petey, Hughes, Demko to build around .... , so why rebuild in hope of finding our next Petey, Hughes, and Demko when we already have them? If they were 29-30 years old i would agree but, they are just entering their prime.
  22. And who is Andy and Logan again? There's just as many, if not more, tweets about how well Hronek has been developing and his trajectory year over year is trending in the right direction. I think we have to give PA/JR the benefit of the doubt here. Most of us thought, including media, thought the Canucks would make the playoffs this year because of the finish last season under Bruce. However, Alvin and JR continuously said we lack structure and Demko bailed us out - they clearly stated we weren't as good of a team as the record indicated. This year proved their evaluation was right, and made a coaching change that is preaching structure and we are already seeing positive changes in a short period of time. No assessment is perfect but, PA/JR have shown an ability to evaluate properly (i.e. Kuzmenko, coaching change, Mikheyev, Joshua, Aman, Filip Johansson, EP 2.0, Lazar, Beauvellier, etc). If anything, PA/JR have shown an ability to properly evaluate, so i'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt here that they made the right decision with bringing Hronek in, in addition to Ray & Kravtsov.
