  1. Absolute joke shutting down gyms.  Why didn't they just go back to the limited system we had before where I had to book my workout time so there was limited people there at a given time frame.  Yes lets shut down something that helps people stay fit and healthy and aren't the ones being the strain on the medical system while we let the unhealthy people continue going through McDonalds and getting that burger, extra large coke with a side of fries.....

"But now a decade into retirement"

Easy to say when you're in retirement.  More difficult when you're actively competiting, training and beat out your competitiors the last 4 years for the 10 minutes of fame you're gunning for.

I don't want to be one of "those" guys but there's an important difference between "postponed" and "cancelled".  Which one is it?  There's a real chance the whole NHL might be suspended for a while.  I want to see more hockey, especially since we're on a roll, but I also want people to be safe.  I suspect that there are going to be a lot more disruptions.  We need to do what it takes to stop this annoying disease, and then get back to hockey.  GCG!

The NHL won't cancel anything unless they are forced to. They will just postpone games into the olympic break (which I highly doubt they are going to now) and end of season.  To many TV contracts to risk cancelling games, they will do whatever in their power to postpone and still get 82 games in.

My wife just came to me crying showing me tickets she had bought for Bryan Adams New years event surprise for us and my mother in law. Now it's been officially canceled. I hate smooth brain anti vaxxers with a passion. Oh and she works in health care and deals daily with the unvaccinated.

I saw Bryan Adams when I was a kid, wasn't that good you're not missing anything.

Many governments in the world have had a taste of power beyond the scope of 'regular' democracy.  Canada has had some of these issues (mild ones, admittedly) but if you look at a fellow commonwealth partner such as Australia...things get a bit darker.

History would tell us those that have such power/privilege rarely give it up easily (referencing history is so passe these days, I know).   Something tells me after covid there will be a lull and then another medical style emergency that will sweep the world.  The coronavirus has shown officials that using a casus belli of a medical nature (IE a plague) is highly effective in instituting strong control over a population.

I'm going to hold onto my hat and hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

This is the one thing I don't like.  Have governments realized they can flex their muscles and just force people to not vacation, not travel, not do anything just because they say now?  How quickly will they be to pull the rug out on the slightest thing in the future that could or could not be.  I fully support the vaccine but the limiting and segrerating vaccinated and unvaccinated who can go to restaurants, gyms, etc. is a little far in my eyes with them flexing more and more "power" over everyone.

And how often have we seen "do as I say not as I do" like the memo leak the other day of rapid tests going to government christmas parties but not to the general public or how many officials have taken vacations.  Or whats not "essential travel"?  I need a mental break from the crap, is me going away on a vacation somehwere warm to zone out and relax for my mental health not essential?

I feel they are pushing their boundaries way to far at this point.

I’m hearing Canada will reapply its advisory against non essential travel tomorrow. My family booked a trip to Mexico over the Christmas break. I realize this is a first world problem for me to have to cancel, but damn, I’ve taken my two shots, booster, kids are vaccinated, we’ve worn masks everywhere, played by all the rules, and after a year and a half of no travel, we were so looking to celebrate a milestone birthday in a fun way.   And it seems like this new variant is simply helping us get to where society will be soon: living with a mild variant like any flu. Maybe it’s helping us get there faster, and authorities aren’t helping in this case.

We cancelled our January mexico trip a couple weeks ago because my kids are young and couldn't go to daycare for 2 weeks once we came back.  It sucks, it would have been our first vacation (other than to vancouver island) in like 5-6 years.

I think the correct question is "will we get paid back"?. 2010 did eventually pay for itself, and this time out there's no need for massive infrastructure spending so it should be easily viable.

If the bid package includes things like developing the land next to the Burrard Bridge as another olympic village that turns into new rental space that would be ideal imo.

We have just dumped billions into the fires/floods/covid.  Atleast in 2010 there was some sort of idea for the coffers of money, the last 2 years has absolutely destroyed our economy, I just can't see  us affording it.

Would be fun but unless theres very little interest and the IOC is going to give a sweetheart deal which they never do, I would have no interest in this any time soon. To much money still being used for everything else needed more than another set of games.

  8. Other star players around the league play PK for years.  They are usually the smartest and best with their sticks so it makes sense.  You could easily do the old Brodeur style where he had everyone not shot block and clear the lanes so he could see the puck, where the forwards take away one time lanes and more less just get their sticks in the lanes to try and force shots to in certain areas.

I don’t want to be that guy, but why on earth would you speed up when you see a vehicle in your path if not for an intention to take out that vehicle? The inner me immediately speculates this could have something to do with racial prejudice or else the whole thing makes no sense. I don’t care if you’re armed forces or not, that doesn’t excuse killing another person, this is a sham of a sentence that likely happened because the 3 killed weren’t Canadians and instead were minorities from another country. 1 year in jail is apparently all each victims lives were worth in this country. Disgusting.

Even if they were Canadians, our judicial system is garbage.  Why we have such POS sentences is beyond me.

WHO says omicron Covid variant detected in 38 countries, early data suggests it’s more contagious than delta

    https://www.cnbc.com/2021/12/03/who-says-omicron-covid-variant-has-spread-to-38-countries.html

The World Health Organization on Friday said the omicron Covid-19 variant has been detected in 38 countries, up from 23 two days ago, with early data suggesting the strain is more contagious than delta.

Unless its changed everything I read earlier in the week say its more contagious but less lethal.  Sounded like at the time it was minor symptoms which were a cough and sneezes but at the time there were no hospitalizions with this strain.  If so sounds like its getting closer to the regular seasonal flu unless something changes.

Medicine Hat (Trevor Lindens home town) loves BC.

    Modest donation made.

Appreciate it.  Tons of people are going to be going through hell for the next few months just attempting to get their homes back to working state.  A lot of these were basement suites so tenants are really screwed now.

  12. Needs to start with Jim and Wiesbrod.  Need a new GM to get a feel and start getting the ball rolling.  This seasons toast already, may as well run it out with Green and let the next GM figure stuff out.

Why governments didn't spend millions to prevent billions worth of damage is going to become a big story here.  Take just one example: a breach of the Sumas dike at Cole Road, which was reported as being 60cm too low in 2015.

    https://theprovince.com/news/province-was-studying-dike-integrity-but-data-not-to-be-available-until-next-month

    canada-flood-1-65.jpg?quality=90&strip=a

You can see on google maps street view that the dike dips noticeably at this crossing...the fact that nobody in charge ordered a road crew to spend a couple of days fixing the problem is an incredibly costly mistake.

    https://goo.gl/maps/9ReHVbEJvVkjDKWYA

Because spending millions for prevention is never a good political move.  They could have done it, and come the next election it would have been brought up as a massive waste of money because it may have not done anything and been seen as a waste of tax dollars that could have been spent elsewhere.

Its a bad political move, good move for long term financially.

Its almost like when the Feds told BC to build Hwy 1 6-8 lanes back in the day.  BC said "nah we don't have that much traffic right now" and now the slightest issue and roads are backed up like hell.  The cost back then was way less with inflation these days, would have been way cheaper per tax payer to do something like that than to attempt to try and retrofit extra lanes like they keep talking about.

No government (both Libs and NDP) want to spend money on things that wont be an immediate benefit that they can tout the next election.

Oh yea years ago some started combusting on a truck and had to get dumped off at a place I was working.  We took it and threw it through a grinder and broke it right up into tiny tiny pieces and it was able to put the fire out.  Theres a place just up the road that I bet will get some of it and dispose of it like that.

So in my past I was a certified ironworker.  I would do specialized flange and wire as well as bridge repair.  Like the kind of work you saw done on BC place with that silly roof.  I also repaired/replaced bridges  over the southern interior and Peace River regions.

For a repair, in this instance before anything can happen; hydrologists/geologists and engineers all ned to do surveys, walk throughs and certify the banks are ready for rebuilding.  They then need to inspect and ensure that the footings for these bridges and O-Pass diversions are still viable for weight.  In an absolutely BEST case scenario they are all good and stable and this takes two months.

    This spring....

But we know looking at those videos the likelihood of those footings being still viable is minimal.

So first thing to happen will be ensuring erosion issues have stopped.  Hydrologists will then have to go in and check river flow and new pathing.  Geologists will have to come in to see about stabilization of the banks and pillars/footings.  Afterwards it's the engineers.  This is basically just year 1. Year 2 is the rebuild where the roads and banks are rebuilt.  New footings and pillars/supports for the bridges and O-pass diversions will be MINIMUM 6 months each.  This means multiple crews and ensuring they are all on the same page and schedule.

Make no mistake about it, other roads will be made ready for use; but the Coq itself as it stands will not be repaired and viable for at least 2+ years to its former standards.

I was guessing 18 months before the Coq gets fixed but you seem to have more of a clue.   I figured it'll be high priority and things will be moved a bit quicker but really until spring it wont be able to get started because it'll be snowing up there soon enough.
