Without getting too much into the complex politics of the current management/ownership dynamic, I think the current state of the team hammers home the point that acquiring young talent is a distinct process from building a truly competitive team around that talent. JB and company have done a good job at the first thing, but haven't demonstrated quite yet that they're capable of doing the second.

Again without getting too much into detail, the current team is not good enough at consistenly carrying the play, often relying far too much on their goaltending to bail them out. There are good enough core pieces to build around, I just have doubts about whether the current management team is the one that can make the next step with this group of players.

This is the answer to your question J.T.

Im more hype about Zegras tbh.

Elite skill for sure... Anaheim will be building around him, very much how we are building around Petey.  However, for this team, I'd argue that Podz will ultimately be more valuable.  His skill set is exactly what this team needs to be more well rounded.  When all is said and done, Zegras may end up being just as talented or even more so than Petey but Podz is one of a kind and his grit and non stop elite motor will be integral to getting us to the Cup and hopefully win it.

From the 2011 dream til the end of the Sedin era, it was an ownership issue. They held onto the dreams of 2011 for too long. And until the Sedins retired it was an ownership run organization. Since they have retired and a rebuild was evident, its become a GM run organization. This is year 3.... and this year was not at all a normal year to gauge for the canucks..... i feel like its groundhogs day. I am sick of repeating myself, but here we go one last time...

    1) We had the worst scheduling to start the season.
    2) COVID decimated us. We spent a month isolating and recovering without playing hockey. Name another team or a year where a team was iced for a month mid season.

    3) The last 19 games in 30 days (a crippling schedule)

    4) the first round of playoffs will be 1/2 over for some teams, before the regular season ends for Van and Calgary

So you feel Benning and staff deserve at least next year to show what they can do before ownership make a decision one way or the other?

Don't know how to feel about JR. In the first half of his time with the Pens he made some great moves that led to two championships, and then in the second half he was arguably the worst GM in the league.

However I do think this team needs a reputable veteran in the front office (whether it's the PoHo or GM) that can both handle the owner and bring some credibility back to the franchise. Someone who knows how to handle the media would be great, too.

I hear yah about Rutherford.  Maybe the game has past him by a bit.  He knew how to build a high octane skilled exciting team and he has the 3 cup to prove it.  Gilman on the other hand is a mind of the numbers.  Our cap has been mismanaged during all of Bennings tenure, Gilman could work his magic and make the hard logical decisions to get our cap workable again.  But does he have the other skill such as delegating and finding the right people for the right positions... Has he built enough connections and goodwill to make a well rounded elite management team?  Not sure but that is what we need.

Canucks Have Some Options if They Decide to Replace Benning (thehockeywriters.com)

Rutherford would be my first pick and Gilman my second.  Either of these guys command a great deal of respect throughout the league.  Different strengths but all of which could help this team get to that next step.  It's time...

    Let's go!!!

  6. Not gonna lie... Overall, this season's been a trainwreck... But that's only because of our performance last year in the bubble, and the higher (maybe unrealistic) expectations that came as a result.  However, it sure has shown the mental fortitude or lack there of on this team and management alike.  It has truly put a spotlight on all areas this team and organization lack in.

Ultimately I think we will look back on this year as the major push, the experience, the lesson needed for our core players to understand physical sacrifice and have the mental fortitude needed to get to the cup and finally win it!

It takes a lot of failures before the true successes are achieved.  There are some exceptions (Chicago and Pittsburg) but most teams take years of heartbreaking loss before they (Tampa, Washington, St.Louis) get to the top.

With Horvat, Petey, Hughes, Miller, Boeser,  Höglander, Rathbone, Juolevi, Podkolzin, (this year's 1st rounder) and most important Demko... We have enough pieces to at least get to the cup.  We're just a third line center and tough crease clearing, stay at home mobile defenceman away from being solid contending team, top to bottom.

To me, this is the final year our team will miss the playoffs for at least the next 5 to 8 years.  I hope in that time we get at least one cup hopefully more.  So enjoy this long off-season because it will be the last long one for a half decade or so!

    Go canucks go!!!

To get one of those guys they only need to stay at 5th or get a little lucky at 6th.

Anything past that and they’re gone.

I really don't see all those defenceman being taken within the top 10 so a couple of those guys should be available.  Regardless, we've seen through 7 seasons that Benning and co more often then not make the right pick in most rounds let alone the first.  We'll be getting a very good core addition this summer!  Question is... Will Benning be calling the shots at that point?

Oh no we beat the Oilers! Some of you don't even sound like Canuck fans. I get wanting a high draft pick but I like seeing our team win, I like seeing our players do well and feel good about their game. You know Highmore is gonna go into next season with confidence and I think he can be a solid bottom 6 contributor.

Highmore and Graovac are welcome back. Maybe Boyd too if Sutter isn't back. Bye to Vesey and Hawrlyuk. Michaelis should be in Abbotsford.

Add Podkolzin (and Petey back) to the top 6 and this team is much better. These guys will be able to take the strong breakout passes Rathbone and Juolevi can dish and actually convert on them.

    +1

Couldn't have said it better myself!

benning did draft a really good young core, but (maybe?) a new guy needs to come in to take the team to the next level.  Not too sure.

I think it's time yah... The next step needs to be with a GM with a new perspective.  I've been a benning supporter all the way along.  But just like when Gillis took over from the Burke/Nonis era to complete the puzzle, I think we need someone else to take this great young core and fill in the holes with the right pieces.

Having Lockwood in the system makes me question why we traded for Highmore. Kind of similar players.

Might have made more sense to trade Gaudette for someone that brings attributes we don’t currently have.

I think there's room and probably should be at least two if these types of players on the bottom 6.  All of Highmore, Motte and/or  Lockwood could complete a very effective bottom 6.

Good points.  If Seattle doesn’t take Lockwood, then he’s a fixture (like Motte and Highmore) in our bottom six next season.  Fast, aggressive, some skill.  Lots of energy and accept their role.

It is interesting to see where Bennings focus is these days.  Prioritizing speed, grit, high compete level with above average hockey IQ.  Seems size and skill are a little lower priority.  We'll see what Gadjovick's got to offer and if big Mack continues improving, then we have the size too.  I could also assume this is due to managements focus on the bottom 6.  I like it so far.  If this continues, this team will have enough free up cash to upgrade out right D and 3rd line center.

  12. 12 minutes ago, Alflives said:

True, but he’s a really good player, who (with opportunity) will do well enough to deserve a second or third contract that we might not be able to pay him.  I see Lockwood as a bottom six guy for us, but he might be a second line guy on a different team in a few years, and get more money that way.

Plus, Seattle could definitely take him in expansion.

Lockwood is a player I’ve been very high on since we drafted him.

I was excited when we drafted him.  At the time, he was the first Benning pick that had quickness, some skill, lots of effort and grit.  His development was slowed due to a couple shoulder dislocations.  As a result, he has to change his game a little to save his body which included getting bigger and stronger.  I see another Motte in Lockwood.

Not enough people listening to dr. Bonnie's advice to “be kind”.

we need a vaccine against nasty.  Maybe that’s humour?  Or is it scotch?  :frantic:

That's what I thought... Well good for you for giving it a go.  As you've experienced today with all the well wishers, there is lots of positivity towards you and your return.

We can still sign him though, can’t we?  NHL players go to the world’s for Russia, and they’re under contract to their NHL teams, no?  We need this kid.  He’s going to be a key piece to our three Cups over the next decade.

Alf... First of all welcome back.  Your sense of humor and overall lighthearted nature (eating cats yhe exception lol!) were very much missed.  A lot of posters hace been at eachother during this trying time for us all and challenging nucks season.  I'm curious.... How was it over at hfboards?  I mean, I think it's way more negative towards our team. Did you find the same thing there as well?

These games are actually super early exhibition games for next season with no stakes so relax and enjoy the game.

All the power to you.  But I like watching quality hockey.  League wide (covid hockey) is not that... Not to mention this team.  It sucks to watch, when you know it could be a lot better.  But hey, enjoy watching the nails on a chalk board hot mess, slow train wreck, covid decimated team that is the current edition of vancouver canucks.... And I'll watch the 10 min highlights and wait for Rathbone and Gadjovick to play before I commit to 2.5 hrs of my time.

I think Rathbone came up from Utica a couple of weeks ago so he's probably good to go tonight if they're going to sit one of the regulars.

Gadjovich won't be in until the games next week.

I'll actually watch the game if Rathbone is in... Still a diehard fan but if I don't have to put myself through inevitable pain and suffering then why would I lol!
