The Vancouver Giants have aquired 18-year-old goaltender Jared Rathjen from the Victoria Royals in exchange for an 8th-round draft pick in the WHL bantam draft. Rathjen is currently playing for the Whitecourt Wolves of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. This trade comes just days after fellow goaltender Liam Liston left the team to attend University of Alberta. Starter Payton Lee played his last game at the world U-17 championship for team Pacific today and will return soon. Rathjen will join the team in their upcoming Alberta road trip. As mentioned above, the Giants have also signed 16-year-old forward Luca Leone of the Coquitlam Express. Leone will also join the Giants in their upcoming road trip.

The Vancouver Giants trade 20-year-old Kale Kessy, a fourth-round pick of the Phoenix Coyotes, to the Kamloops Blazers in exchange for 18-year-old Bob Trzonkowski and a 2015 fifth-round draft pick. Kessy was picked up by the Giants earlier this year from Medicine Hat for a 2015 fifth-round pick. The WHL trade deadline is coming up next week and it is expected that the Giants will make some more moves in their rebuild, perhaps including overager Trevor Cheek, who has 17 goals in 37 games and has 7 in as many games. It really sucks that Tvrdon is hurt, he would've fetched a good return.

Before the draft, I thought that Samuelsson would've been a great choice. Only problem is his suspensions. But hey, another reason for the bruins to hate us, why not eh? But with Gaunce available that late in the first round, he was clearly the better choice. I, along with many other people, were thinking he would go late teens, early twenties. I wasn't home during the Canucks draft choice, and I was giddy with excitement when I got home to see that we had Gaunce. I had barely any thought that he would still be available to us.

I think the best comparison to Schroeder right now would be Andrew Cogliano. Both small, 2nd/3rd line centers, with good 2-way ability. Drafted around the same pick (22nd, 25th, respectively), and probably won't quite live up to the hype of being a first round pick.

It all depends on how we groom him. It seems like even among power forwards, there are two types of players, those who are good defensively, and those who are not. He could turn into a Milan Lucic or Evande Kane-type player, or more like a Wayne Simmonds, Ryan Clowe or Shane Doan-like player.

Well Gaunce was expected to go a lot higher and if he did I would've been happy with Samuelsson.
