The San Jose Sharks: Rebuilding, Retooling, Revamped:

The San Jose Sharks blew things up this trade deadline, trading away many veterans for prospects and picks. In this article, we will analyze some of the Sharks top prospects and tell you a bit of their story in real life.

Goaltenders:

Jacob Markstrom (55 POT) - One thing the Sharks won't have to worry about is a goaltender of the future. Acquired in the blockbuster deal with Florida along with Jonathan Drouin, Jacob will be one of the few players that will either make or break the Sharks in the upcoming years. Currently, Jacob is ready to break into a starting goaltending role with Florida after being one of the top goaltending prospects in the NHL for the past few years.

Years before making it into the NHL: 1 or less

Benjamin Conz (75 POT) - Signed last offseason to an NHL contract, Benjamin Conz is one of the upcoming Sharks goaltenders that will need a few years of grooming. After a spectacular performance at the WJHC with Switzerland, and is playing in Switzerland right now.

Years before making it into the NHL: 3-4

Dmitri Shikin (60 POT) - Another goaltender signed last offseason, Dmitri Shikin is an intriguing goaltender to watch. After leading Russia to a gold medal at the WJHC in 2010-2011, Dmitri has failed to make an impact on any pro leagues so far. Currently playing in the VHL in Russia, Dmitri will need some more seasoning before he gets the abilities to become a backup or starting goaltender in STHS.

Years before making it into the NHL: 4-5

Defenders:

Martin Marincin (60 POT) - Acquired in a trade with Edmonton, Martin Marincin will hopefully become a steady top 6 defender for San Jose in the future. Tagged with inconsistency issues with Prince George in the WHL, as well as OKC in the AHL, if Martin will be able to overcome these issues it will be a step in the right direction for the future of the Sharks.

Years before making it into the NHL: 4-5

David Musil (65 POT) - Regarded as one of the best upcoming shutdown defenders, David was also acquired in the trade that sent Dion Phaneuf to Edmonton. Repping his native Czech Republic in 3 U18 tournaments as well as 3 WJHC's means that David was highly regarded at a young age. Currently headed to play for the Oklahoma City Barons next year will be a big step in David's development.

Years before making it into the NHL: 2-3

Albert Yarullin (65 POT) - The defenceman with the booming slapshot from the point from Russia was another one of AGM Nails signings from last offseason. After watching him rip it up on the PP with Russia in the WJHC, San Jose was interested in his services. Albert will have some growing to do in the STHS system, but if he keeps on developing, you could see him donning a Sharks jersey in the future.

Years before making it into the NHL: 3-4

Konrad Abeltshauser (50 POT) - Fresh off a Memorial Cup run that saw him at almost a PPG in the regular season, Konrad Abeltshauser should become a part of the Sharks very soon. A very good leader (Was captain of Germany in WJHC Qualifying) and if he is able to use his 6"5 frame wisely, could become a great bottom pairing defencemen.

Years before making it into the NHL: 3-4

Joe Hicketts (Uncreated) - Drafted in the 4th round in last years draft, Joe Hicketts is out there to show others why he should've been a 1st round pick. Just a few days ago, Joe won the Ivan Hlinka tournament with team Canada where he was an assistant captain. He was deemed by many, one of Team Canada's MVP's as well. Depending on his STHS attributes, Joe can be anywhere from 2-5 years away from the NHL. But, if he keeps showing how great he is in real life, his STHS attributes will go up naturally.

Years before making it into the NHL: 3-4

Forwards:

Jonathan Drouin (80 POT) - Jonathan Drouin has ripped up the QMJHL in real life, and the AHL in STHS. Not bad for a 20 year old player! After being acquired from the Florida Panthers, Jonathan produced an astonishing 41 points in 40 games. After a callup to the NHL, Jonathan has also produced 5 points in 17 games. Pair him with San Jose's 2013 1st round pick Andre Burakowsky and you have yourself a young, dynamic duo. It won't take long for Jonathan to become a superstar, something Sharks fans have waited for ever since the departure of Joe Thornton.

Years before making it into the NHL: 1-2

Andre Burakowsky (85 POT) - Another huge, huge part of the Sharks future is Andre Burakowsky. The Swede is oozing with potential to become a star in this league. After being drafted 11th overall by the Sharks in the 2013 STHS Draft, Andre will hopefully become an NHL player for a long time to come.

Years before making it into the NHL: 1-2

Rocco Grimaldi (75 POT) - Acquired in a deal that sent Dan Boyle to Minnesota, Rocco Grimaldi is an interesting player. At only 5"6, Rocco will only succeed if he is in a top 6 role. With the departure of Logan Couture the need for a true #1 center has came and San Jose will give Rocco all the time in the world to develop into that. With David Desharnais, David Legwand and Travis Zajac all signed for the next 3+ seasons, Rocco will get plenty of time to become a true top 6 center.

Years before making it in to the NHL: 3-4

Jason Dickinson (70 POT) - Just recently acquired from Detroit in the Brad Stuart trade, the 2013 first round pick will look to find consistency with San Jose after failing to do so with Detroit. Jason will be able to fulfill a top 9 role in the future and the Sharks hope he will be able to develop into the player the Red Wings envisioned he would become when he was drafted.

Years before making it into the NHL: 3-4

Beau Bennett (50 POT) - The sniper acquired in the deal that sent Jumbo Joe to Pittsburgh hasn't lived up to expectations yet with San Jose. Luckily, he'll have some more opportunities to live up to those expectations and become a top 6 player with San Jose. In real life, Beau has developed himself into a guy that has a huge ceiling to succeed and we hope that his STHS rerate will follow that as well.

Years before making it into the NHL: 2-3

Landon Ferraro (55 POT) - Acquired in the trade that brought Travis Zajac to San Jose, Landon is one of the Sharks prospects that can play a top 6 role, or a bottom 6 role. All signs point to him becoming a 3rd line grinder who can chip in with points, but Landon could surprise and become more than that.

Years before making it into the NHL: 2-3

Ryan Spooner (60 POT) - A playmaking offensive centerman with speed defines Ryan Spooners game. After being acquired by trade from the Boston Bruins in exchange for a draft pick, Spooner will need some good rerates to develop into a top 6 center like he should be. If he doesn't develop, he could find himself on a team with a 3rd line scoring line but all hopes go towards him developing into a top 6 center.

Years before making it into the NHL: 2-3

Jakub Vrana (Uncreated) - The 20th overall selection in last years STHS Draft may become a top 10 pick for next years NHL Entry Draft. Regarded as a gifted offensive scorer that can play all 3 zones, Jakub may find himself with a top 6 role in the near future.

Years before making it into the NHL: 3-4

Samuel Bennett (Uncreated) - Drafted 41th overall by the Panthers, Bennett was also another piece that San Jose acquired from the Logan Couture trade. Bennett was also a part of the Ivan Hlinka team that won Gold and just came off a 40 point season with Kingston in the OHL. Sam could find himself in a 2nd/3rd line type role in the near future.

Years before making it into the NHL: 3-4

Nic Petan (Uncreated) - Another high risk, high reward pick as Nic Petan dominated the WHL taking a share of the scoring lead this past season. Although he was drafted in the 2nd round by Winnipeg in real life, Petan could've been a potential top 20 pick had he been taller than his 5"9 frame. Put Petan in an offensive role and he is sure to suceed.

Years before making it into the NHL: 2-3

Daniel Audette (Uncreated) - Drafted 50th overall by San Jose in the 2014 STHS Draft, Daniel has some heavy shoes to fill in real life. The son of Donald, was drafted 1st overall by the Sherbrooke Phoenix is also a relatively small prospect at 5"8. Daniel should make it to the NHL, but depending on what role he plays will either be effective or a complete bust.

Years before making it into the NHL: 3-4

Jake Virtanen (Uncreated) - The 8th overall pick in a very successful draft for the Sharks has lived with hefty expectations since being drafted 1st overall to the Calgary Hitmen. Jake has a willingness to score but also to engage physically and that may just set him apart from the rest of the Sharks prospects.

Years before making it into the NHL: 2-3

Overview:

Here is a potential roster that the Sharks could ice in a few seasons:

Jonathan Drouin - Nic Petan - Andre Burakowsky

Jakub Vrana - Rocco Grimaldi - Jake Virtanen

Jason Dickensen - Ryan Spooner - Beau Bennett

Samuel Bennett - Daniel Audette - Landon Ferraro

Joe Hicketts - David Musil

Martin Marincin - Albert Yarullin

Konrad Abeltshauer - ????

Jacob Markstrom

Benjamin Conz

Dmitri Shikin

As you can see, the Sharks are offensive heavy especially up the middle where they have 4 offensive smallish centers. Maybe in the future one could be moved for more of a two way guy? The defense needs work, but we can easily fix that with 1 1st, 3 2nds, 4 3rds and 3 5ths to go along with 3 1st rounders next year. Goaltending should be fine for many years to come.

Thanks for the read guys!
