Can Virtanen start the NHL season on the IR?

Pushing a player down the lineup for 9 games to see where a prospect is at to the NHL level is very possible.

Down the lineup to where? There's a little thing called the CBA that limits the number of roster spots and who is or isn't waiver eligible. The roster is already full. And every one of them is waiver eligible. That means to gift a prospect with a 9 game tryout a player needs to go through waivers or be traded. Neither will happen for a "look see" prospect. Either a prospect steals a spot or he's out unless a veteran is injured to start the season.

If you're thinking Horvat, there's three ways for him to start the season here:

1 - He play so well he steals a spot.

2 - One of the Utica eligible prospect plays so well they steal a spot. Then he could be sent to Utica and Horvat given his nine games and the other prospect recalled afterward.

3 - A veteran is injured for the start of the season.

He's one of the youngest kids to be drafted in a while. 17 years old and he's already at a point per game at junior. I expect him to spend another season in junior and score about 90 points in 70 games, then another year where he has another big year and could top 100 points if he keeps developing, then spend a year in the AHL and hopefully be at or just below a point per game before splitting time with the Canucks and Comets as a 20 or 21 year old rookie.

In about 3-4 years time, I'll be expecting a lineup like this:

Shinkaruk - ? - Jensen

Kassian - Horvat - Bonino

Sedin - Sedin - Virtanen

? - ? - ?

Edler - Tanev

Sbisa - Corrado

Hamhuis? - Bieksa?

Lack
