The morality of tanking

Recommended Posts

Once the top-3 are determined by lottery, the extreme tanking we are seeing should dissipate quite a bit. Usually there is one, maybe two absolute top talents in the draft. In the past, and even this year, you could ensure getting the top guy (pre-lottery) or at least the consolation prize (post-lottery) by being the worst team.

But in the future, that will only assure you 4th overall. Whereas three teams that tried and fell just short may be picking top-3, and in a position to turn it around and compete right away. They can still attract free agents, and their players haven't formed a culture of losing (Oilers). The incentives will be gone.

One funny thing about the Sabres though...they have 52 points in the standings right now, which is the same as they had last year. So in a way, if they just get one more OTL/SOL, they have improved! The reality is, even without trading for injured players and shipping out decent goalies, they are simply terrible at hockey. Their GM is just taking additional steps to try to ensure they will land the Eichel consolation prize (since even if they're last, there's an 80% chance McDavid goes elsewhere). But that won't be an option after this season.
