Cassidy got fired in part because the lack of development of their younger players - Neely sppoke about that.  Boston already knew that their roster was ageing and that they needed a succession plan.  They swapped Haula for Zacha also to get younger and prepare the post-Bergeron era.

They'll have to complete their roster on the cheap.  Might use next season as a bit of a transition year without Bergeron/Krejci as players step into increased roles and they wait for some cap to open up.  They already went a season without Krejci and still made the playoffs - their overall roster seems stronger today then it was then.

Would expect them to try and open up some cap by trading Reilly, Grzelcyk or Forbort (UFAs in a year). Got to wonder if Anaheim might not be looking for short term veteran Ds (option for Myers too btw).  They added Beaulieu/Klingberg last season and have Shattenkirk as expiring UFA - ie they are possibly down 3 veterans Ds.  They added Klingberg on the hope to flip him at the TDL so maybe they'll do the same again this season.

They might convince one of their RFAs to sign for much lower and then get their payday once they open up some cap a few years later - the SJS/Tampa approach.

Pastrnak wanted to know their plan before extending.  They sold him on something - doubt it's a blow up.

Yes, they had to sell Pastrnak on something, it's called an 11.25x8 contract.  When you are given $90 million to stay where you are it is easy to hang around.  He also probably thought he was winning a cup this year, it would have been his best chance to win one.  And before you say he would have gotten more somewhere else, which team would have been able to pay him $12 million that is a contender?  Would Boston really have traded him while they are the best team in hockey?  I doubt that.

Reilly would need to be a cap dump.  Boston has zero assets to attach to any Reilly trade.  Forbort and Grzelcyk have big tickets.  What is Anaheim going to give Boston to help them clear cap?  And if they trade those guys who is going to replace them?

At the end of the day, Boston has no prospects, no draft picks and no cap space.  Neely is going to have to be like Harry Houdini if he wants to actually improve the team.  I don't see it happening.  Too many holes to fill.  Only 14 players signed, Swayman and Frederic are RFA's and looking for big raises.  Neither one is going to sign for lower than what they are worth.  Both players should be getting raises up to $3 million as both have arbitration rights.  Just re-signing Frederic and Swayman alone would wipe out most of Boston's cap space, and they would need to sign another 6-7 guys on top.
