They are trying to compete now pretty evident they are bound to sign a player in free agency. Another bloated contract among the other bloated contracts on the roster.
So how do you avoid bloated contracts at free agency? How do you improve the team without free agency? Let me guess, build through the draft, correct?
What in your opinion is a bloated contract?
So you would not pay 5-6m per for Gavrikov? Or 3-4m for Barbashev? Or 5m for Graves?

Imagine our cap situation (not to mention our draft capital/prospect pool) if we didn't sign Mik, and traded both Miller/Kuz at the deadline for picks/prospects? Not only would we have the cap-room JR has said from day 1 he wanted, but we wouldn't be rated as one of the worst prospect pools/farm teams in the entire league. Or, even more realistically, imagine if Allvin were able to unload Garland/Boeser without having to actually pay someone to take those contracts?
That would suggest a rebuild through the prime years of Petey, Hughes and Demko. Cap doesnt mean sh*t if Petey and Hughes no longer want to be here and play through a rebuild.
So the goal here is to collect as many picks as possible to have the best prospect pool in the league? We have a bad prospect pool because our prospects have graduated. Petey, Boeser, Hughes, Demko, Podz, Hoglander will all be with the big club next year.
We may not have blue chip prospects but we do have
Johansson
Pettersson
Hirose
Kudraytsev
Lekerremaki
Silovs
11th OA
Not horrible in my opinion but definitley room improvement which will happen over the next 1-2 seasons.
I seriously do not undertsand the logic behind trading away good young players for picks to draft younger players with the hopes that they become the players you initially traded.

the extra 4 mil gives the Canucks time for some of the bad contracts to expire. Unfortunately I am pretty sure Allvin will spend that extra 4 mil on another bloated contract.
Like the other bloated contracts hes signed? Sorry cant recall which ones, some help please?

Hoping the cap goes up every year isn't a replacement for wise, fiscal, long-term planning for this organization.
If this happens and the cap does increase - it's just luck for Allvin. Yes, Benning made a mess of things for sure, but Allvin didn't exactly 'penny pinch' when he took over either to this point.
Allvin has some decisions to make - some hard ones that might rub some people the wrong way - but ones that need to be made to keep this franchise competitive in the long-term.
Further clarification please?
Where did he spend where he had the option to do otherwise? Miller? I would say that the miller deal was a good deal for him based on what he brings to the team and how hes played since joining the Canucks aside from the beginning of this season.
Mikhayev? Kuzmenko? Team is much better with them than without them and replacement players of similar ilk likely cost much more. Any mistakes that Alvin made (Stillman), he cut his losses quickly.
I think our cap situation is 98% Benning's fault and is a work in progress. Also think that PA is doing the best he can with the hand hes been dealt. I also think that an additional 4m cap space is very advantageous for the Canucks even if we spend on an FA. The benefits are apparent on the increased strength of our position to now deal players that many teams will need to reach the cap floor (Myers) but now also have the freedom to take on players like Garland that have term and money attached.

That's all well and good but those video highlights, pointing out his skating, are from this season. If that's his 'vastly improved' skating just how slow was he two - three years ago? The knock on Boeser was his skating. It has improved but nobody is calling Boeser fast.
If you turn the draft rankings in that video into 'consensus' he ranks 19th. Trade down?
On a few other forums, there are some that believe he is a sure-fire top 10 talent. Others believe he could go as high as 5. Personally dont see it, but speaks volumes to his potential and the end result after a solid development journey.
Wood or Reinbacher for me unless Alvin thinks ASP is the 2nd coming of Hughes.

As much as I'd love to have a 2nd round or several. I hope we can acquire them by other means. Trading 2 3rds for a 2nd would be foolish in my opinion.
I trade 2 3rds for an early to mid 2nd every day of the week. Quality over quantity.
However, if we could trade a 3rd, 4th for a 2nd rounder twice, that would be ideal.
3rd, 4th,4th for a early-mid 2nd
3rd and 4th for a late 2nd

After watching a few more videos and doing some light reading, its become quite evident that the top two players for the Canucks should be Wood or Reinbacher. Just imagine the 2nd coming of Todd Bertuzzi playing with Petey and Kuzmenko...West Coast Express v2

Even if Raty hits (and I think he will), they still need at least two possible top level C in the system, imo.
I think we accomplish that in this years draft with the 11OA and possibly in later rounds or the following year. If they can address the top 4 this off season and draft a center in the draft. They will focus on drafting more centers next season.

Hughes and Hronek can both carry their pairings, so best to split them up and use them together only when needed (one goal down, PP using 2 Dmen, etc.). Marino would have been nice to play directly with Hughes, but most likely Tocchet is looking for a Schenn type of player to play with Hughes. And we need another Schenn type to play with Hronek.
After watching the playoffs and watching how the Vegas D dominated the Oilers and how Carolina's D is dominating the eastern teams, it is pretty clear that we need those big defensive Dmen to compliment our offensive guys...
Sign Graves now that Gavrikov seems to be close to signing an extension with the Kings. Really like Graves and how hes played this year with the Devils. I think he would be perfect. He's a right shot defenseman, no?
Hughes and Graves
OEL and Hronek

Exactly, and with how Petey Hughes and Demko are emerging as the core, IMO it makes the most sense to bring in an asset that can likely fill our biggest need (strong RHD, and preferably a partner for OEL IMO, since Hughes can play with anyone so we should look at someone to stabilize the OEL pairing as no one will be coming to take him off our hands so we might as well max him out for what we can get from him). Either you're blowing up the core or you're adding pieces to help strengthen it and I'm glad so far that we took steps to build it up.
Eight simple rules for building a Stanley Cup contender - The Hockey News - this article points out how contenders typically build around 7 core pieces, and so far we're 6/7 of the way there, with a question mark on who the 7th will be. If Miller can remain the strong #2 C and Hronek becomes our #2 it really helps a lot with any future contention aspirations.
#1 C - Petey// #1 D - Hughes// #1 wing - Kuzmenko// #2 C - Miller*// another core forward - Boeser??* // #2 D - Hronek* // #1 G - DemkoLets hope and pray Hronek can get OEL playing better. All OEL has to do is concentrate on the defensive side of the game and leave the zone exits and offensive rushes to Hronek. The less OEL has to do the more effective I think he can be.
IF OEL can get back to form, I wouldnt mind running something like this:
Hughes ????
OEL Hronek
Hirose Burroughs

Owner of the Dallas Stars was asked on Donnie and Dhali if he thought the Canucks should enter a rebuild and he said no and I agree.
You do not rebuild a team when you have players like Pettersson, Hughes, Demko, Kuzmenko and Miller. If you do want to rebuild, you move every single one of the core and draft players hoping they become who you traded. Makes no sense in my mind. What if the drafted players dont pan out? Another rebuild? Start over again in hopes of finally drafting a Huges, Petey and Demko? Sounds stupid doesnt it?
If Hoglander and Podkolzin can take the next step and we can find another top 4 defenseman and 3C, there isnt much missing unless some feel Petey, Hughes and Demko are not good enough to lead us to the Finals.

That’s with Pearson and Poolman included. There will be a little wiggle room once they are put on LTIR.
But yeah, Canucks still need to create cap space and no teams will be doing them any favours.
Pearson and Poolman on LTIR. Im confident Myers gets moved at end of September as well. Garland and Beauvillier will both me moved at the deadline next season. Next year we may be chasing the playoffs but its going to be another year tinkering and experimenting where we try to assemble the roster we want to compete for the foreseeable future.
Only thing we should be doing in the offseason is looking for a partner for Hughes or Hronek (i prefer to Sign Graves or Gavrikov and draft ASP/Reinbacher) and shedding salary from the current roster.
In 2024-2025
Kuzmenko Pettersson Hoglander
Mikhayev Miller Boeser
Karlsson Raty Podkolzin
???? Aman Joshua
Hughes Reinbacher/ASP
Gavrikov/Graves Hronek

Any Canadian team except for the Flames and Leafs. At this point, aside from those two teams, I just want a Canadian team to bring the cup back up North where it belongs.

Bedard is as talented as McDavid, cost controlled, and doesn't have character issues. He's worth more.
More than Pettersson, Hughes and Demko?
You do realize that all 3 players have the potential to be top 5 players at their positions in the entire league, right? I would argue all 3 are top 10 already. Would not be trading all 3 for Bedard or even McDavid - nor could I say that Bedard has anywhere close to the same value as all 3 especially not having played a single NHL game yet.
If you could win it all with one player, Edmonton would have a few cups already, yet they have arguably the 1st and 2nd best players in the world and havent won sh*t

Only way Chicago trades him to Vancouver is for a package like:
1st in 2023, 1st in 2024, Podkolzin, Raty, Hoglander, Silovs, Kudraytsev
This sets up their rebuild well enough that they could consider moving Bedard should he come out and say he will only play for the Canucks.
We would then have to move Miller for defensive help and somehow restock the prospect pool.
I think Bedard is going to be a fantastic player but I would not be doing that deal. Rather, I will wait for Bedard to become UFA in 7 years or so along with Celebrini in 8 years. Petey and Hughes will be at the tailend of their primes and will be an absolute spectacle to watch them play together in 2030-2031, the year the Canucks hoist the Stanley Cup.

After reading comments on here, watching video clips, reading scouting reports etc, there are only 3 players I would be ecstatic for the Canucks to take at 11 (that would likely be available). Ideally, if these 3 are all available at 11, I could see the Canucks trading down to 14-16 and pick up a 2nd round pick or maybe several mid round picks that could be packaged later.

There is a possible solution but that would take a concerted effort by Canucks nation and the people of BC to demonstrate, hang banners, shame him and protest loudly - en masse - to rid this team of Aqua-lini. To get this to happen we'd need even more terrible years of failure - enough to provoke and pi$$-off even the most patient & reasonable fans to Rise-up and yell "Enough is Enough" and disgrace Aqua-lini publicly by the thousands - as an incompetent idiot that has meddled and mismanaged this team into the sewer.
We all know he is the root of all Canucks problems so until he goes - nothing will ever change.
dont think that would be enough. if my team is worth 3 billion, you could start burning ppl at the stake and I still wouldnt sell LOL. A protest by a few thousand ppl isnt going to convince me to sell a money printing machine.

Just called my bank and unfortunately they said right now is not the best time for me financially to buy the team as it would over extend me a little bit.
Now can anyone lend $6 for my hemorrhoid medication? - my accountant said this would over extend me as well.
