  1. no problem with the disagreement, i concede im old and biased towards that 94 team. I guess my point was that there are as many key pieces on the current team - that were drafted- as the 2011 team had. The 2011 core was bolstered through trades involving picks in the years leading up to the cup run. As for this player (Hronek) - hes roughly a year older than EP and fills the biggest hole on the roster. There are many holes, but no legit top 4 RHD is the biggest. Its up to management now to fix the cap situation. I think its a disservice to EP and Hughes prime years if they dont try and turn this around sooner than later.
  2. The 94 team was the best overall team, imho, in franchise history. Perfect mix of grit, toughness and skill. It was a middle of a pack team that year because they underperformed in the regular season. In the 93 season they finished with 101 points and in 92 they finished with 96 points. It was an excellent team that came within a period of the cup. So lets go with the argument that the 2011 team was supposedly built via the draft. You cite 3 players - Sedin, Sedin and Kesler as the key players.. Sedins drafted in 99 and Kesler in 03. They did not make the cup final till 2011 - 8 years after Kesler drafted and 12 years after Sedins drafted. What is the difference today in terms of core players drafted? They have drafted 3 core players - Hughes, EP and Demko. Hughes is an elite puck mover- best in team history. EP is arguably better than anyone at his age in team history at center. Demko is a solid goalie. Did the 2011 team - in the years leading up to 2011 that is - hoard picks ? How about the 94 team from 89-94? The draft record and success of draft picks developing into impact players does not look good to me during the years leading up to 2011 and 1994. Those teams were built around 3-4 drafted key players- the rest came from shrewd trades, developing guys like Burrows and Bieksa in the farm...and some luck. Im not saying collecting picks, hoarding futures, and tanking isnt the right path ...im just wondering why some people assume its the only path.
  3. Frank Corrado (now an analsyt) has interesting take (at about 2:30 in) maybe some hard feelings over ice time ? It sounds more like a guess but he is puzzled as to why they would move him also. From Yzerman's press conference it seems like the Canucks came to him and targeted Hronek - he really wasnt on the market. At around 4 minute mark Yzerman talks about how they were not really looking to trade Hronek
  4. I can see the merits of “tanking” and accumulating picks which turn into potentially good players, It looks like a great strategy that has worked for some teams. On the other hand… were the 94 and 2011 teams built using that method? Two of the most successful teams in franchise history- came within a whiff of the cup. I can only imagine what guys like Drance would have been saying about the 94 team … well we did have guys like Gallagher and McRae. Those teams had a small number of key players that were drafted by the team. The rest of the rosters were built through trades and signings and developing some players in lower leagues. I don’t understand where or exactly when this obsession with draft picks started. I’ll even concede that the game seemed more enjoyable to me years ago when I hardly knew the salaries because they were not published. i get that the team looks like it’s in trouble right now. They are basically capped out and need multiple changes. Let’s wait and see what they do between the end of the season and training camp. It’s not like they have shown that they are unwilling to make a lot of moves. I’m also interested to see how this group develops its players. It’s a good sign imho that they are letting hogs simmer in the ahl and the coach there is implementing systems that help players transition to the nhl - something Tocchet has mentioned.
  5. ive become desensitized to how good he is. like that move he pulled on Reaves...made him fall over himself..we havent had a guy on the back end move like that like ever...
  6. Was just enjoying me some Calgary Puck: I want Treliving gone tonight. Clean out your office now and catch a flight out with your new team. I hate the Huberdeau and Kadri signings more than any moves this team has ever made. Franchise wrecking contracts. No more sugar coating this disaster.
  7. Sikura was Gaudette's linemate in college...i credit him for pumping up Gaudette's stats. He was the engine that drove that line.
  8. Im trying to think of this objectively. When they started to "retool" in 2013 or 2014 the Canuck primary players were all guys in their late 20s and early 30s - guys past their prime. They were trying to milk one more run out of them - kinda like what the Penguins might be doing now. The difference this time is we have one of the best C's in the teams history that is under 25, we have one of the best D's in team history that is under 25, and we have a solid goalie that could end up being one of the best in team history also. There are some excellent periphery pieces too...Podz, Kuzmenko, Beau. There are a lot of things that need to go right when you tear down and rebuild from scratch. You have to avoid the Juolevi's, Virtanens, Pouliots, Gudbransons in the draft (high picks that dont pan out) and the guys that do hit have to end up becoming impact players. Its a multi year process with a lot of pitfalls that could see the prime years of established impact players fizzle out. Each side has good arguments to make. My point is that I think this time they are building from a different core than they were in the past.
  9. Team pro scouting making a big call here. They way I look at is they cant go all the way and tear down. They are re-loading around EP/Hughes/Demko (I now include Raty, Podz in the mix). You think these guys want to be the next Bo Horvat? Playing on a languishing teamyear after year during their prime.
  10. im waiting to see what else they do, its hard to judge this in isolation. Team needs top 4 RHD, but having potential of multiple first rounders this year would have been great.
  11. Welp lets hope pro scouting comes through here. Hronek addresses the biggest need in the organization right now RHD. And dont worry ! we will get that first back when JT gets moved
  12. Why do we assume its a military tank when we use the word "tank"...im thinking its more of a septic tank .. fits the situation better doesnt it?
  13. In addition to that I think Tocchet is the type of coach that can help reform a 'floater'.
  14. I don’t know mich about this player. I’m assuming he fits the “young under performer with high upside” category management has stated that they would target.
