nuckin_futz
Retiring doesn't cancel a contract. I think it even gets paid out, regardless.

resdog
Here is what I can gather from the CBA: Retiring doesn't cancel a contract. I think it even gets paid out, regardless.

Gurn
"If a player officially retires, he is no longer under contract. No contract = no cap hit. Question - Why would Luongo retire?" MANGO
There is always a way... you don't always have to go through proper channels and lawyers. One could offer Lu 5 or 10 mil. to retire, then because you still own his rights you can trade him for a real bonified player. But on the condition that he rip up his existing contract sign a new deal with this other team. Or some version of a buy-out scenario. Some might say why would he do this when he already has this very lucrative contract. well it ends up being about the same money in the long run given the fact that he is also signing a new contract for say maybe only 4 mil a year. This type of scenario is a win-win situation for everyone involved. Canucks get - out of this contract with lu - free up cap space - potentially a bonified star in return because we aren't dumping salary anymore. - a player that is easier to trade Lu gets - out of Vancouver - out from under this terribly burdensome contract - ends up on a team that isn't a media frenzy - potentially closer to his family New team gets - a great goalie that needs a fresh start - potentially are retooling and need to free up cap space and need to dump salary in the form of a real sniper/goal scorer
-NucksFan
Why on earth would you even consider that a successful 33yr old goalie would think of retiring when all he ever talks about is being a competetor and wanting to win the Cup.
