Massive shakeup in Los Angeles

Kings fans were treated to a massive trade late last night, as the team saw Brad Marchand, TJ Oshie, Mark Giordano, Drew Shore, and Tyler Johnson shipped out in return for Evgeni Malkin, Matt Niskanen, and Magnus Paajarvi. The major part of the deal was obviously Evgeni Malkin, who now gives the Kings a franchise player to build around. The team had reportedly been looking for a game changing forward, and certainly ended up getting that player in Malkin. It's expected that Malkin will be paired with Martin St. Louis on the first line, while the team will shuffle other forwards through to go with the duo in order to find the right fit. Not to be forgotten, the Kings also acquired two top young talents in Matt Niskanen and Magnus Paajarvi. Niskanen had been a Kings target for some time, and it's expected he will be looked upon to replace some of the minutes left by the departed Mark Giordano. Paajarvi will also have a bigger role, as the Kings will look to help him realize his immense potential by giving him minutes in the top 9.

Opportunity for several players?

The departure of Oshie, Marchand, and Giordano leaves several open spots available in the top 6 forward group and top 4 D. Up front, it's expected that young wingers Michael Grabner and Bryan Bickell will have a great chance at more minutes. Both players had been buried in the bottom 6 with the amount of depth the Kings had, but will now have their chance to show their stuff in the top 6. On D, it's expected that Tim Gleason will be asked to slot in to the top 4, with Matt Niskanen also getting a chance. The emergence of young defenders such as Patrick Wiercioch and Sami Vatanen this season was a large part of what allowed the Kings to deal Giordano.

Goaltending situation resolved?

Early on in the season it appeared that a looming goaltending controversy might be coming, with both Ryan Miller and Sergei Bobrovsky playing so well. However, the young Russian has faltered lately while the veteran Miller has been as solid as ever. Bobrovsky looks to be the future in goal for LA, but it is apparent that he won't be wrestling the starting job away from Miller anytime soon.

Prospect update

One young King who has really started to make a name for himself is the diminutive John Gaudreau. While small in stature, Gaudreau has proven to be immensely skilled as he dominated at the recent WJC. He possesses slick hands, terrific vision and hockey IQ to go along with a deadly accurate wrist shot. Gaudreau continues to be a force in the NCAA with Boston College, and is rapidly climbing to the top of the Kings prospect chart. It is expected that the Kings will look to get him signed asap, as Gaudreau is easily one of the brightest young stars in the organization.
