If we truly want to be a Cup favourite/contender, then we need as much depth as possible, especially up the middle. I think Lapierre fits perfectly on the 4th line, so it would be better for him to stay there. It would be nice for Scroeder to rise up and earn a spot in camp, too. He is looking like another potential bust in Canuck's Draft history. 0.55 PPG in 150 AHL games doesn't scream NHL'er to me. If we have to sign or trade for a 3 centre, I would go at: 1. Dubinsky 2. Goc 3. Arnott I always worry about "chemistry" when too many new guys are added at once. Don't really want to just trade Lu to meet current needs (e.g. for 3rd line center or goalie), it should be smarter to build for the future esp. with the way the team is now. Twins - Booth Burr - Kes - Mueller Higgins - Arnott - Hansen (size, grit, scoring, defense, two play makers for Arnott the shooter) Don't want to count Lapierre or possibly Gaunce out of the 3rd line, but we'll see (still pining for Jason Arnott). Tragoedia Posted July 6, 2012 Share Posted July 6, 2012 Lapierre made a great 3rd line centre during our 2011 run, BUT he plays on the fourth line so well it's hard to replace him. If Malhotra can make a comeback, then it's his job. Schroeder should at least get an audition in my opinion. Whether he will hold onto it is probably doubtful at this stage, but you never know. If possible, i wouldn't be opposed to bringing in another seasoned veteran like Palhsson, but I hope Malhotra can get conditioned and work on his vision. I wouldn't trade many assets for one though. I'd love to see Bjugstad come this way in the Luongo deal - if not him, Matthias will make a good third line center, a little further in his development, probably not as much upside. Goc would also be a good option - Florida really has the pieces to get a deal done. Even if a Luongo deal doesn't get done, or if a center is not a piece, the Canucks have reasonable options that are not that easy to upgrade. Once Kesler returns, if the Canucks then have Lapierre, Malhotra, Shroeder, and a Luongo trade center, (in addition to Gaunce and Mallet in the system), another third line guy may be a slight bottleneck. People talking smack about Schroeder should have a closer look at him - he has almost identical scoring statistics as Hodgson at his age - but was a much better +/- player, has much better speed, more grit, and seems to have some positive intangibles. I really don't see why he can't be as successful as Hodgson was, particuarly if he is blessed with solid two way linemates like Higgins and Hansen. I expect Malhotra to be better this season, if you remember when Ohlund injured his eye it took him two years or so before he was back to normal. Malhotra's coming up on that, and Lapierre is capable of filling that spot too, I think he has more to contribute in a bigger role with Kesler hurt. And Ebbett is a perfectly good fill-in. Between those three guys and with Schroeder coming to camp with a spot open, I think we are just fine at center, we can give Kes as much time as he needs and when he comes back it's just gravy. He deserves the chance, with a full summer of training I'm sure he will be a lot better this year. (Defensively and offensively) Unless they have him stuck on the fourth line all season. EDIT: Although If he does falter, I'm fine with Lappy taking over I guess.. We should still sign a veteran guy like Jason Arnott just in case though. The twins play well with smart hard forechecking players that pass well and find scoring positions. He has also shown offensive upside - Malhotra has had time to adjust to his injury. Now with a FULL off-season to train and improve, I believe he can return to form, being that shutdown 3rd line center and putting up 30-40 points. - Schroeder will be in his last year of his ELC and it would be such a waste to not give him a chance for a guy who was highly touted and drafted in the first round. At the very least let him play 2nd or 3rd line while Kesler is out and see how it goes. I feel comfortable with these choices. We have seen what Lapierre and Maholtra can do and I think they can gel well in that role That being said, for the right price, I wouldn't mind a trade or an under the radar free agent signing (Brule, Mueller) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
