I was thinking if Schroeder is able to crack the lineup, he should play wing along side Manny.

-Malhotra will still take most of the faceoffs, having Malhotra on that line as a mentor for Schroeder could provide a real boost for his development

-One of the best ways for Schroeder to learn how to win faceoffs, is to watch one of the best in the game doing it right in front of him everyday.

-Last season sometimes Manny would take the faceoff and then switch over to wing due to his eye injury. Schroeder is most comfortable playing center, he has struggled when he has to play wing, so it would work if him and Manny switch.

-Based on the forwards we have as of today, this is the lineup I'd like to see.

Daniel Sedin ----------- Henrik Sedin ---------David Booth
Mason Raymond ------Ryan Kesler-----------Alexandre Burrows
Chris Higgins ---------- Maxim Lapierre------- Jannik Hansen
Jordan Schroeder------Manny Malhotra------ Zack Kassian

Aaron Volpatti----Andrew Ebbett ($0.600m) /

-if you were to add Kassian to there line it would help him as well. His minutes would be limited and controlled (AV loves that).

-Malhotra would be the perfect on ice coach for both Kassian and Schroeder. he will tell them what to look for and where to be and what mistakes they made.

I think the faceoff aspect is something that can be learned in practice. Schroeder has apparently struggled on the wing and I'd much rather have Volpatti and Pinizzotto battle it out for the 4th line winger position and give us more toughness there.

This is actually a very interesting idea. I like the look of that 4th line, but I'm afraid that Schroeder will not do well on the fourth line. He is also better performance wise as a centreman.

I dont think they should split duties... I agree Manny is a great mentor, especially when CoHo was still here but Schroeder will get a chance at 2nd line center while Kes is injured and then he can go be first line center with Chicago and work on consistently putting points on the board every night. Scouts say this kid is really skilled but consistency is his issue.

If Schroeder can't make the top 6 he shouldn't be in the lineup.

While playing with Manny might help, it'd only be useful if he's not stuck on the 4th line. I think there are better opportunities, like between Higgins and Hansen where Higgins has played center and both are strong forecheckers with good skill. As has been said, he can learn more from Manny in practice than he can in games for faceoff skills in particular.

We may need Schroeder for a 2nd line role at the start of the season if no one else steps up or we don't acquire anyone else, but I think his best bet right now is the 3rd line C role. He has speed, defensive awareness and is very strong on his skates despite not being particularly tall.

Fingers crossed that Doan comes home and Florida gonna send us something for Lu, might as well be a guy we kinda need while Kesler is dodgy

we need versions of those 2 in the lineup plus a big nasty Top 4 D.

He better find a way to find that power forward and that 3rd centre or else its gonna be another long summer next year too.

What do you mean by Doan coming home? Weiss will not be coming here unless Kesler is going the other way. Our D's top 4 is already set too, we have no more room unless someone from our top 4 is going the other way which is very unlikely.

Unfortunately I agree about him being over paid as a fourth liner. He was a great acquisition before his injury, but the sad reality is that both he and Raymond are a waste of cap space, as is Ballard if he stays as the 5th/6th pairing or (even worse) in the press box. We could use that money for a second line winger and another center.

According to DeNiro, we don't need "mentors." Apparently, these are grown men who don't need to be taught new things.

I think DeNiro is referring to on-ice mentorship...if this is the case, I would tend to agree with him.

For the most part, coaching in amateur ranks have improved so much that when a kid gets to the pros, he's been well mentored/coached. What kids like Schroeder need is the time to develop (as he did the past 2 seasons in the AHL), and most importantly, the opportunity to play meaningful minutes, as well as exposure to life as a professional athlete.

Given the make-up of Malhotra, I have no doubt that he would take the time during practice and in the locker room to talk about techniques and drills to improve certain skill sets for Schroeder or any other prospect. In this specific case, Schroeder and Malhotra are different type of players, so I'm sure a kid like Schroeder could benefit from Malhotra's wisdom to help improve parts of his game that Malhotra is strong with so as to make him a more all-around player. But to think that Manny's magical mentorship will transform Schroeder is a reach...no doubt Schroeder would benefit, but Schroeder strikes me as a confident young man who needs the opportunity to play at the NHL level.

Perhaps where Malhotra's mentorship can be fully realized is all the off-ice stuff that goes with playing in the major leagues (but this would be shared by other veterans on the team). For those who watched 24/7: Flyers and Rangers, you can see how Sean Coutourier (spelling?) benefited from living with Daniel Briere...also, Crosby/Lemieux.

For those who feel Malhotra is overpaid, I would say that based solely on performance, he probably is; however, the intangible factors that we (which is 99.9% of us) don't see makes him a valuable member of the team. With the benefit of a full off-season of training, I would expect him to be the pre-eye injury Malhotra.

Since this isn't hockey perhaps DeNiro could be your CDC mentor ... unless of course you are a grown man. :)
