  1. I know insurance companies are driving up premiums... because they are losing money on the investment side due to low interest rates and on the claim side due to the high number of claims that may or may not be caused by climate change such as increased flooding, hurricanes, Forest Fires etc. I thought of picking up an insurance company down the road a s a hedge against inflation and rising rates. If interest rates climb they will start making more money on the investment side. Is this a thing or am I wrong?
  2. Im likely to never be a day trader but I am curious about it. Would you care to explain why you stopped (no worries if you dont)? what does it take to be a day trader? Any online resources or books you recommend?
  3. Should be the Skate logo instead of the Orca
  4. Hunters on Amazon Part Schindlers list, part Inglorious Basterds, part Oceans Eleven, part comic book hero, add in some seventies vibes Hard hitting scenes of holocaust, mixed with over the top violence, mixed with some camp If the first scene puts you off then you should pass on the rest. The second scene is a discussion on Darth Vader.... enough said Some great acting and some of the most vile characters I have ever seen, Including the Secretary of State and the American Nazi psychopath.
  5. Island cases going up now to 111. Right after Long weekend. Coincidence? .... maybe May long weekend we should shut ferries down to non-essential travel. I know Easter long weekend travel via ferries was very low despite news reports and social media saying otherwise. 15,000 people only which I think was 90% of normal but still those all cant be essential trips. Geographically we have an opportunity to shut Covid down on the island and start reopening the economy. One of the steps would be shutting down the ferries to all but essential services. Even if it is just an experiment it would be worth trying.
  6. What's next storage in rail cars? If it's not already done?
  7. Does anyone have insight into the renewable energies sector? What about TransAlta (RNW). Has rebounded off its lows however Dividend is around 6%.
  8. I see a few posts on people using TFSA accounts for day trading/short term trades. Makes sense however if you are not into day trading but rather long term investing what are the best strategies in your opinion. Dividends, Growth?? I was thinking of investing in dividend stocks in my TFSA for some tax free income in the future.
  9. Obviously it wasnt the only problem but it was the first problem and sharing a border with China they decided to shut it down early. There is a reason why their outbreak is delayed. Unfortunately many other mistakes were made (like all countries) and now it looks like they are going to be in real trouble like USA and Italy.
  10. I have been thinking if I could volunteer and deliver groceries. Kind of like our boy Podkolzin
  11. Too bad really because they closed the border to China early so they really had a jump start on everyone on containing the spread.
  12. Simple really. One person can wait outside the store and help carry the groceries home. A shopping cart inside the store will suffice for one person to get everything needed. A grocery list will make sure that the one person inside the store does not miss anything. Shopping alone is a recommendation from health officials and I've watched video from store managers pleading for people to shop alone - meaning no couples and no kids unless circumstances require that. Personally it does not matter to me. Last time I went shopping I saw several older couples - I have no issues with that. However there are some people who are deathly afraid of being in close contact with people in the store and overcrowding is a real problem for them. Also the less people the better in protecting staff. I was in the the baking aisle alone when a older lady entered the aisle. I was having a hard time finding yeast of course so was going up and down the aisle. I noticed she was very nervous as I started to get closer to her and she said the aisle was one way only. I knew this but said I was having a hard time finding something. I was a bit annoyed she was calling me out for going the wrong way when I was searching for something lol. I offered for her to pass me but that clearly revolted her by the look of disgust on her face. She very clearly did not want to be close to anyone. I ended up backing out of the aisle and let her pass so I could go back to looking for yeast - which of course was gone.
  13. anyone aware of some grass roots volunteer possibilities? ie delivering groceries, whatever? Donating masks to health care... I have an n95 mask for construction. its not the type they typically wear in health care but I thought of donating it. I do need it cause im doing some demo with asbestos in drywall but I may put that off. I wish this thread was more about these type of topics and less about politics and stats! Here is a video from Russia of some people making masks and delivering them to old people. Not sure about the effectiveness of home made masks. Anyone have any thoughts? My feeling is they may do more harm than good by giving a false sense of protectiveness. However if people are aware of there limitations they may be alright at keeping hands away from mouths or containing ones own sneezes. I would think they need to be sterilized after every use. One thing I notice in the next video from a different creator is just how many people are wearing masks. In fact they said they are required in a separate video. Last time I went grocery shopping I maybe saw two plus the staff wearing masks.
  14. Thanks for the listen! Its a little long too hahaha But I have been listening to the playlist as I do my renovation so it works out good for me. I would not say I listen to Muse a lot. Although I might start.... that song hysteria is giving me the chills right around the 2:45 mark. So much tension in the song before that. Yes I added Peggy Lee for some fun as the theme of the playlist is quite dark even though not all the songs feel that way.
  15. Why did we not sign Hamhuis, or did he decide to leave because we attempted to trade him and failed? He surely would have been better then some of the defenders we had in the following years.
  16. Did anyone try the Battlefield 5 Battle Royal game? It looked like modern warfare BR except in WW2 setting. Problem was it was not free to play and you needed to purchase the game to play. I was skipping Battlefield 5 or at least waiting until a sale and all the kinks were worked out. Looks like it died out do to lack of developer support and not being free to play. I think if DICE put their mind to it they could create an unreal Battle Royal game. Cant wait to the next Battlefield. I think it will be a good one because they will have 3-4 years to work on it. They need to save the franchise after Battlefield One and 5. Battlefield 3 and 4 are classics.
  17. Had some time to kill and had an idea for a playlist based on a song a friend was listening to NIN - Everyday is Exactly the Same Hope you enjoy! (Its a playlist so should just play through all the songs)
  18. Insurance could be hit hard if corona virus shuts down businesses and that triggers "business interruption" coverage. Business Interruption insurance covers a business financial loss such as lost profits and paying for ongoing expenses such as rent, hydro, etc when a business can no longer operate due to an insured risk. For instance a fire burns a restaurant down they can put in a claim for their financial losses if they have business Interruption coverage. there are options to even cover salaries of some or all employees Financial losses and ongoing expenses are usually covered for a year but can be longer so we are talking large payouts depending on how long these shutdowns will continue. I have to read a policy to see if a shut down due to pandemic or civil order is covered. If so expect higher insurance premiums going forward.
  19. Get a bachelors degree in computer science for free ... sort of http://blog.agupieware.com/2014/06/online-learning-intensive-bachelors.html (some of their links no longer work)
  20. Yes, too bad they didn't announce this 20 pages earlier
