    And you have succinctly made my point for me.

    The playoffs ARE a different animal, and Tampa Bay has now got the record for 'most disappointing team in NHL history' for their playoff disappearing act.

    Winning the presidents' trophy is not winning. Aside from some fans of that team, nobody remembers the Prez trophy winner unless they do something like lose disappointingly in the first round against the 8th seed (like us vs the Kings, or Tampa this year).

    Anything less than the Stanley Cup is 'not winning'. That should be the end goal. How we get there is always going to be the measure of debate, but building for anything other than that goal is a waste of time.

    Squeaking into the playoffs and winning the Cup is vastly superior to blowing the league away and not.

    So what did Tampa do wrong? What if Boeser and Pettersson end up being playoff equivalents to Stamkos and Kucherov?

    Where would Benning have failed to account for that while he 'builds' this team?

    I don't think we should do anything. Stay the course. It's not exciting, but I'd rather be boring and win than be Tampa Bay.

    We just watched Edmonton and Toronto utterly screw themselves over through signing a massive free agent deal. I'd rather learn from their mistakes than repeat them here.

    Karlsson is the only game breaker on the list, but he'll want too much term for his 'body'. If he'd do a 1 year 'max' deal to make the money while we have the cap, and renew for 4 more 'mid season' at a more paletable cap deal to keep building a solid team, I'd go for that.

    He's going to want 10-11 for 7 though, doughty+ money. And someone will give it to him. I hope it isn't us. It'll be a Marleau deal where the last year or two just skunk a team.

    This is ridiculous, what do you even mean by that? By any logical measure, Tampa Bay destroyed the league this year. It's not their fault the playoffs are a different animal.

    ... And we happily look to be following in very similar footsteps, about 2'ish years behind their rebuild.

    Obviously these are just loose comparables but...

    Mackinnnon = Pettersson

    Rantanen = Boeser

    Landeskog = Horvat

    Barrie = Hughes (hopefully)

    Soderberg = Pearson

    Kerfoot = Virtanen

    Johnson = Edler

    I'd imagine (assuming another solid summer at the draft, FA's, trades etc) and a another good year of development, we should be looking far more like a legit bubble team next year, as COL was last year.

    Then the year following, hopefully we follow a similar trajectory as they did this year.

    Kerfoot and Virtanen are literally the opposite in every aspect of playing style lol.

  4. Toffoli's vice is that his skating is awful and he's a streaky scorer. He was able to get away with it with the Kings in their peak because they played a slow, possession-heavy game which favoured his skillset. But the game has transitioned so much towards speed that he's been somewhat left behind. It especially does not make sense because the Canucks are primarily a North - South team, we would not be a good fit for him.

    I would rather keep investing in Jake.

    Hypothetically, where would he have gone in last years draft?

    Other than BB, I dont see the same quality of defender in the top of this years draft.

    What do I know, Button has Broberg going top 5.

    Getting a complete RHD cannot be over looked, but is he a top ten guy or a team need, or both as you suggest.

    Could a trade down accomplish the same goal?

    One scouting report I read, or watched put a premium on his RHD vs his other abilities... I will paraphrase, but the take was that his position is what puts him in the top 15, but if he was a LHD he would be in the lower half of the first round.

    We need RHD, Woo is in the pipeline, but we dont have alot else.  But the need is now.  I like Soderstrom, but have some doubts about his timeline.

    That said, you have been right far more than me.  With this draft I think JB might look to trade vs take a d man.  The only roadblock is that Edmonton is even more desperate than us and their timeline was 3 years ago.

    Likely between Bouchard and Ty Smith.

  6. 23 minutes ago, Phat Fingers said:

    How far away do you think he is?  3 years minimum?  I am not adverse to taking a d man, but this year at ten I hope either Krebs or Vegras falls.  Whomever is there at ten is going to be at least 2 years away.

    Soderstrom does have a good two way game and is already playing in the SHL so ge should translate.  This draft I think that there is one or two forwards that will fall out of the top 9 that have more upside.

    Gotta think that Edmonton is looking hard at him too.  He could be gone before ten.

    Good depth is never a bad thing, but if a deal can be made with our first to get better sooner, I would think that JB would trade our pick.  JB doesn't have any clock left.

     JB knows that he has to make some moves this summer to get this team competitive.  That RHD need is urgent.

    He plays a mature, cerebral game that would likely have him not look out of place even if he slotted in next year.

    But, it would be in his best interest to test his limits offensively in another league next year while still building his frame.

    what I don't get, is how I can see flashes of puck moving brilliance from Stetcher, Hutton, even Pouliot & Biega, but there's no consistency.. like it was a total fluke or something.. can't they watch some video and think, yah that's what I need to be doing? is it a confidence thing? or does a player like Hughes somehow see the play unfolding differently or maybe have the ability to make proper adjustments on the fly? just a level up in that skill, plain & simple I guess..

    I think Stecher, Hutton, Biega etc are examples of players with individual talent and hard work but average hockey IQ. Their spatial awareness is not very good and every play they make is telegraphed. With time and space, Stecher and Hutton can make the right play because they can rely on their puck skills to get them out of trouble. However, under time constraints they resort to making the 'safe' play every time because they don't have the quick thinking and on ice awareness that someone like Hughes does.

     I dont agree.  I know the results given his draft position have been disappointing but even as a 3rd liner he brings speed and hitting to our 3rd line.  One may say he is the perfect 3rd liner in fact.  As such, I feel he will stick around.  Losing him would make our soft team even softer.

    If he had the work ethic of Motte I wouldn't mind, but watching him reminds me a lot of Kassian. Speed and tenacity when he ha the puck but as soon as he loses it his game slows down and he ends up puck watching. He's definitely a lot better than Kassian in most regards to his defensive game, but I don't see him taking another step development wise unless he starts showing that he wants it as bad as Horvat or Pettersson.

  9. Really disappointing year from him. He's put up the stats but has largely been ineffective even strength.

    He's just so much slower than other players at everything. I hope he doesn't end up like Toffoli.

    Do you think teams would give up a first rounder for a prospect who in a 2016 redraft would be pick maybe around 15/20?

    So basically you trade your pick for a player with same value but two year older..

    (I’m genuin curious, don’t want to sound polemic :lol:)

    Not saying they would but for a team like Edmonton more prospects do nothing to help a team that should be gunning for the playoffs.

    It's not like Juolevi has zero value either, he was having a decent season in the AHL until his injury.

    Why give up on Juolevi now?

    Seems like the worst possible timing considering his injury and what it does to his current trade value. The kid was doing more than ok in the AHL before it got cut short because of surgery. He might take a little longer but he's a lock to be an NHLer and it's likely he will be a top 4.

    Back on topic, a lot of guys I like this year so I keep changing my really amateur top 10

    Hughes

    Kakko

    Podkolzin

    Cozens

    Byram

    Boldy

    Turcotte

    Dach

    Krebs

    Broberg

    HM: Zegras, Harley, Kaliyev

    Not giving up, selling from a position of strength for a position of need.
