  1. He already hits like a truck at age 19.

What's it going to be like for opponents when he matures?

Forward version of Scott Stevens?

I hope so. Stevens is my favourite defenseman all time. Absolute crime he hasn't won a Norris. Although some of his hits wouldn't stand now, he only had 3 elbowing penalties in his career. He would have changed his game, jus like he did when he went from an offensive-minded goon to a pure shutdown defenseman.

We can only hope Virtanen can change his game like that--to fit the situation--or the climate of the NHL, but it looks like he can so far. That battle in the net was so old school I didn't even care he embellished (I rather liked that). However, he can shift to a more on-the-puck game if he needs to. No wonder Willie likes him.

  2. He's so good at honing in on people for hits. Gets guys like Doughty that are extremely hard to catch. I think it's true that he has high IQ for his style of play. Although he has gotten some stupid penalties, he's about as clean a hitter for someone who hits that hard.

  3. I think a third line of

    Higgins - Sutter - Virtanen

would put in work over the course of the season. Two hard working defensively responsible vets to show him the ropes and take a little of the two way pressure off of him.

After going to the McCann thread I knew you'd say Virt should stay.

But, I can't get mad at that line.

  4. I'm excited too, but adding 3 rookies does not constitute a seamless rebuild.

Yeah I know, I just meant there are more to come. 3 more may join next year. The presence of vets allows them some people they can learn from.
  5. I'm not worried about Bart. Moves the puck well, plays physical and can skate.

One thing I've noticed this preseason is how much better the team is at transitioning out of our zone and he's part of that (along with Hutton) IMO.

    He's not flashy but he's a solid 4/5 guy.

I agree. Bartkowski has silently played well.

Losing Bieksa kind of sucked, but I think we've improved our defense in terms of the transition game and not turning the puck over.

  6. I think Jake's D is under rated in the D zone. I try to watch him closely and he is always in the right position depending on where the puck is. Stops and starts are good. Guy looks committed to being a good 2 way player and with great vets to learn from, I see his game really improving like Bo's has with NHL experience.

Kid is so deft with the puck just like Perry is

He kind of floats, but only a bit. You can see that his head is on a swivel to see if there's someone uncovered on the rush. It's kind of jarring to see such a fast guy slow down that much, but he can explode and throw a check out of nowhere; if anything, it's nice he saves his energy. When they shoot he almost always goes to the front of the net to block a shot off a potential rebound.

He's raw, but man, he has some tantalizing skills.

  7. It's interesting. After going on the Oilers forums, it seems like most fans there have a decent amount of respect for Virt because of that hit.

That's cause he's not a dirty hitter. He never lifts his feet or hits in the #s

  8. I really like Gaunce next to Bo. Helps that he can play centre or wing on the 4th line and penalty kill. That switch may have been the best thing for his career, making him a more versatile player.

Out of all our prospects, him making the team makes the most sense--but I hope we move some guys so others can make it as well.

  9. That release is sick.

His positioning could better, but he's smart in terms of when to hit and when not to. Doesn't hit in the numbers or get caught behind the play after one. More a question of knowing where to be.

  10. I think Nylander will be a Grabner kind of player, with an admittedly higher ceiling. He'll be good, but certainly not a franchise player, same as Jake, same as every other player outside of the top 3-4 in that draft.

Nylander and Grabner don't even play alike.
