  1. Pretty much. Shocked people are mentioning Boesser and Horvat in the same sentence as MacKinnon. He's on a different level from both of them combined.

That's going a bit too far. I don't wanna put a cap on Horvat's potential--if he got that much faster in a short amount of time just through playing shorter shifts and NEVER floating around, who knows how good he'll get. However, I think we'll all agree that while Horvat has a high floor, Mackinnon has a very high ceiling. He looked like the best player on the ice most of the time in his first playoffs.

On the other hand, it's just ridiculous to say Boeser is better than Eichel, at this point. It's fairly likely Eichel will be better than McDavid in their first season. He is more developed than almost anybody who has entered this league at that age.

  2. Jones

    Monahan

    Horvat

    That's the top three.

A GM not named Gillis had him ranked 4th.

He might be right. Although some of us worried if he'd be able to drive to the net like he did in junior, he did that in the playoffs. When he converts those chances, oh man.

I'd probably rank Mackinnon ahead of him though. Maybe Barkov.

  3. Lets not get ahead of ourselves here. I'm not sure i see a 30 goal season in Virtanen let alone a 50.

I said 'potential.' I don't think he'll be a 50 goal scorer like Neely; I just think he'll be similarly hard to play against.

  4. wow people really don't understand how good Hanzal is here lol.

Hanzal is a good player. One of my favourite on the Coyotes. But it's the Coyotes....

Virtanen has Cam Neely potential. You don't trade that for a 30 pt producer.

  5. Maybe it's just because he played Finland, but I just realized that another comparable for his ability to find open spots is Selanne. If he can develop the same kind of offensive awareness as Hull and Selanne, in finding places to shoot, then we've got a player on our hands.

  6. Probably going to get the Draisatl treatment. With the Canucks til WJC, then back to the Hitmen in Jan.

It's also possible he joins after the WJC, when some players have been traded. We could use that hitting acumen in the playoffs, and it seems like that hockey IQ issue has been overblown.

  7. Canucks want him at 205: http://www.theprovince.com/sports/Jamieson+Virtanen+learning+hard+Canucks+camp/11195615/story.html

The general plan is to increase Virtanen’s strength and reduce his percentage of body fat. He arrived at Utica in May with 215 pounds on his big, 6-foot-1 frame, but the Canucks would like to see him at around 205 at training camp.

Could probably skate faster at that weight, and I'm not even sure if it'd affect his hitting much. Maybe with big dmen

Team Canada practises today & tomorrow before facing Russia on Monday; 1st of 4 exhibition games over 4 days v RUS & CZE

I think I'd rather have Virtanen over any of the guys there, although I wanted Dal Colle before the draft (but he's been somewhat outshined by cassels - what a pick).
  9. I don't know how but Virtanen needs to get his 9 game stint imo. It's important for his development. Maybe a trade or like I said there's usually someone injured anyways.

This is the 6th overall pick from 2014. He needs to get a taste of the nhl.

I think the Canucks drafted him because of what he might do with the Sedins. Expect him to get in quickly, but maybe not next season

  10. Hockey sense is mainly an individual skill that can't be taught by any coach. That's the way I look at it atleast

Not really. It's true that some just have great vision and an innate sense of where to go to get the puck, but hockey sense also incorporates turning what you learn from a coach into instinct
