  1. I think Hughes is riding on Chara's shoulders.
  2. My guess is its Koskinen + (rumoured 1st) for Murray. It would make sense as to why the big ask by Pitt as they are not gaining cap relief in the Murray trade. Downgrade the back up from Murray to Koskinen and gain an asset for it. Personally, no one should trade for Murray. Over rated, will be over paid. Force Pitt into trading Jarry. Similar to how TB would have wanted to trade Palat or Killorn but ended up having to trade Miller.
  3. He was traded to create room for the cap but wasn't what we typically refer as a cap dump (ie. Marleau from the Leafs). I am sure TB would have preferred to trade away others like a Johnson or Palat before trading Miller but wouldn't have had the same offers.
  4. Barrie has a cap hit of 2.75 for the Leafs as the Avs kept 50% as part of the trade. That is probably where the confusion came from.
  5. That is not an increase in pay for Barrie. His current contract is 5.5 a year.
  6. True, but those hockey analysts always say that Benning has paid too much, regardless of the trade. I agree though, few could have predicted it would turn out this well for Vancouver.
  7. If we can't manage to resign Marky, Tanev and Taffoli, I would be ok signing Hamonic instead of Tanev if that price difference makes it work to also sign the other two. I prefer Tanev but Hamonic brings a similar game, 1 year younger and cheaper.
  8. Never said these were things I expected to happen or were likely to happen, just things that I would need to happen in order to even consider trading Boeser. The point of my post was that it does not make sense for us to trade Boeser unless a whole bunch of things all line up then it might make sense. I don't think it is impossible for Hoglander to be in the top 6 but think it is very unlikely. If at camp he blew our socks off and he made the team, I would rather find a spot in the top 6 for him than force him to play out of style unless its on a very sheltered offensive line with Gaudette. This is all irrelevant to my post though. I would require someone coming in to be a top 6 winger that was part of the Boeser trade in order to replace him otherwise I am just not trading him.
  9. I don't see what is so confusing. If Hoglander is ready to step into a top 6 role (I don't like him in a non scoring role) then we don't need both Taffoli and Boeser. If he is not there, then I want our top 6 to include Boeser. I know it is unlikely, but that is the point, its fine to explore options, but it should be very unlikely we trade Boeser.
  10. Only trade Boeser if all of these things are then also true: -Hoglander is ready to play top 6 next year -Taffoli is re-signed at a reasonable term and avg -It allows us to re-sign Markstrom and Tanev as well -We get a kings ransom in return (ie- young cheap RD and 1st) -The NHL does not allow us to have a compliance buy out and Eriksson is still on the books. As much as the team would be better next year with Taffoli, we can't go with him over Boeser long term just to have Taffoli not be a rental. I also don't want to force Virtanen into a top 6 and honestly would rather he is the guy to go. Him partying while Bo is quarentined from his wife and newborn shows his lack of character and childishness that he is not improving upon. I did like Leivo on the second wing.
  11. The cba agreement bails out Nashville as we all suspected. At least it is not a total bail out but just an altering of the rules to not crush their franchise meanwhile the Canucks situation remains unchanged. For those who haven't heard the change. The new agreement won't allow the cap recapture penalty to be higher than the avg salary of the player. So when Weber retires it won't cost Nashville the crazy 10-25 mil it was going to, but instead the penalty will be the avg salary of the player till the total amount of the recapture has been met. Ie. If Weber retires with one year left, Nashville would have faced a 24.5 million recapture penalty for the next season. Now, they will face 7.5 million for 3 seasons and 2 million for the 4th season.
  12. First off, we don't have the cap for a 7mil contract this year... second there is no reason for Vancouver or Markstrom to sign a 1 year deal. Others have posted why Markstrom wouldn't (although maybe at that high of a camp which is totally out of the question for Van). There is no reason to sign him to a 1 year deal and then let him walk. In my opinion, if we can get it under the cap, the best situation is to have both goalies next year to decide who we want moving forward, and then expose the other one in the draft to avoid losing another player. Or we trade one of them if the incoming value from the trade is higher than that which we would lose in the expansion draft.
  13. By all account it seems like Marky really likes it here, and maybe he would like Seattle as well for their similarities and closeness. If I was him, I would take a deal with Van if it was a price to my liking and term, and be willing to fight Demko to be the one protected, but also be willing to play for Seattle if not.
  14. Ya, I said we could trade his rights but we would get nexted to nothing for them, fewer teams need a starting goalie than other positions so it is very unlikely a team trades for his rights rather than just waits to FA. In terms of doing a sign and trade, we would be screwing over Marky. There is zero reason for him to not just go to FA and sign for which ever team wants him and not have his future team give up assets for him, they would probably be willing to pay more too without giving up assets.
  15. I think the goalie situtation is the hardest decision to make moving forward. If they give us a buyout that we can use on Eriksson, and Markstrom is willing to take a 2 or 3 year deal then that is ideal. So many questions moving forward. What Markstrom will we see here on out? Is this an outlier year? Is it his breakout and he could be a top 5 goalie in the league for a few years? Easy to overpay him if we base his contract solely on this past year but also would hate to have him walk and become a legit top 5 guy. To complicate matters is the question mark of Demko. Is he ready to be a starter next year? Is he going to progress into his full potential and be a top guy? Or will be be Eddie Lack and peter out. Would hate to trade Demko and have him become Rask like with the Leafs, but would suck to let Markstrom go and Demko becomes a career backup or average starter. Hopefully we can make things work to see them both back for another full season and can make a decision next offseason with who to run with.
  16. This isn't NHL 20. Want any player to sign with us again at favorable terms and not have a no trade attached? There is a reason you never see teams sign and trade in the NHL. Didn't consider the consequences did you?
  17. How do we trade an unrestricted free agent? His rights aren't worth close to a first.
  18. I don't disagree with you, but where do you put Hog than? Can't go on the 4th line as that is a defensive line, don't think there is room in our top 6 unless Taffoli goes or we totally shake up the lines. If they are already sheltering the Gaud/Virt line and using it as secondary scoring, just keep going with that with Hog there as well. Keep it sheltered but improve the offensive part. The only other option I see is using Gaud with Pearson and Taffoli and using Horvat with Hog and Virtanen.
  19. Have not read through this whole thing, but I think we might be able to sign all three to cheaper than expected short term deals. It is a terrible time for UFA's to cash in, market will be REAL low. I think there will be a fair amount of 1 year deals roughly around what they made this past year by guys so they can try to cash in on a much better market next UFA. The league will HAVE to do something like offer buy outs if the cap is flat or reduces. Too many top teams would be royally screwed it would be bad for business.
  20. Okay fair speculation, I read your comment as one that had the news secured. I thought maybe a missed an announcement. The only news I've heard is the 84-88 projection... which is for sure up in the air now due to this.
  21. Math adds up as I did it all on the cap friendly interactive tool. I did leave Leivo off the team as he is redundant if we resign Taffoli. I also don't think getting out of Loui's contract is something we can count on which is why I left his cap on the team. Things are much easier if it does get terminated.
  22. On an optimistic mind set, the cap is at 88m. Eriksson and Ferland's contracts are off the books. We decide to keep Markstrom instead of Demko. We have an roughly 10m in cap space to deal with the LHD, maybe re-sign Pearson.
  23. Ok fair enough. I gave it a go. Signed Hughes to an 8m contract using Chabot as a comparable. I think Hughes is better but there are also some really good young Dmen signed for less so I think that is a fair contract to project. I signed Petey to an 8.5 m contract. Could maybe be higher, but their are comparables on both ends, ended up using Aho at 8.4 and it also slides him between the numbers of guys like Connor, Point, Nylander on the low side and Marner, Eichel, Rantanen on the high side. The major move I made to come up with the cap space was allowing Seattle to take Markstrom (hoping Demko is ready after another full season as back up next year), and promoted DiPietro to back up. This also assumes that the contract I simulated for next year for Markstrom does not include a No Trade. I used a cap hit of 85 m as I figured either they will sign the rumoured multi year static cap (which would likely be above the 84m baseline projection for next year if its static for multiple years), or it will be low end next year with modest gain the year after. I think it could be up to 88m for this year but like my last projection, lets go low end. I allowed Pearson, Benn and Edler to leave. I brought up Pod, Hoglander, Rafferty, Juolevi. Spooner's buyout comes off the books. My roster is: Miller Petey Taffoli Pod Horvat Boeser Hog Gaudette Virtanen McKewen Beagle Motte Rousell Eriksson Ferland Hughes Tanev Juolevi Myers Rafferty Stetcher Demko DiPietro .5 m in cap space The roster is not fully complete as I obviously have too many forwards, with Rousell, Eriksson and Ferland all eating up a tonne of cap. The D needs one more guy, specifically a LHD. I have stopped at this point because there are MANY possibilities from here on out to make it work. Ferland could be LTIR or retired due to health so that is a big question mark, Eriksson could get moved, retire or mutual termination of contract, and Rousell is a possible trade target to lose salary but ideally is on the roster in case Pod or Hog aren't ready. I also left all 3 salaries on the table to counter balance if we end up going with Markstrom instead of Demko, and/or a potential Tryamkin signing to fill out our LHD or another replacement FA. I kind of went with worst case scenario in terms of cap on the roster, and if I was to move forward with the roster above, I would then be willing to trade a 1st to get rid of Eriksson or trade Ferland and Rousell. Either way, after this experiment I think we will be fine re-signing Petey and Hughes if we brought back Markstrom, Tanev and Taffoli for next year. Remember, the year after this projected lineup, Luongo's recapture comes off the books too to create more room moving forward.
