So Carolina is going to give up this stellar contact in a budding stud Kotkaniemi, plus their #1RHD prospect, and a 1st round pick for a 2LW?  Makes complete sense!

All levels of grey in this one.  That is my assessment and why I would do the deal, but if you talk to some people Miller is a HOF/generational power forward and Kotkaniemi is barely an NHLer on an 8 x 4.8M contract.  The deal is fair for both sides based on the timeline needs.  Very few are saying it's unfair, most are just saying they don't like certain players.

  2. Kotkaniemi is not the only piece of a potential return for Miller.  Essentially we swap a 30 year old 2LW for a 22 year old 3C along with 3.5M in cap savings.  On top of that we have been talking about adding a 2RD in Morrow and a 1st which could be something like Dragecevic or Bonk types who could be another 2RD.

Offensive output gap between Miller and Kotkaniemi doesn't have to be made up from him, but could be made up from Garland, Kravtsov, Raty, Hoglander etc.  More opportunity for younger players to fill the gap as they emerge rather that just doing the same thing expecting a different result.

  3. Seems pretty obvious that any deal with Carolina would involve Kotkaniemi, not as the difference maker in the deal but as the cap offset meeting a roster need as 3C as a basement.  All of this talk of Miller being a great PWF and he has 120 hits in 20 mins of ATOI and Kotkaniemi has 80 hits in 14 mins of ATOI.  That's pretty close once you compensate the icetime and the fact that Kotkaniemi has played C more where you aren't being the main player on the forecheck.

We can afford to lose Miller if we get three strong pieces (Including an RD) back.

It's definitely suspicious but could genuinely be an injury. Miller was hit by the puck a couple games in a row and seemed to be hurt but played through it. Both times it seemed to catch him in the mid-section which isn't quite "lower body" but who knows.

At minimum, Miller missing time increases the likelihood of a tank to close out the season, so it may end up benefiting the Canucks anyway.

If the Canucks can draft in the top-3, then they're going to have one heck of a player even if it's not Bedard.

Definitely true.  Him out of the lineup does help the tank, so there is a positive in that regard at a minimum.  Him being moved would just be the right steps for us as a franchise.  We could immediately have a wealth of NHL ready prospects any many positions giving us a few years for them to develop and fill in the gaps as needed.

  5. Still don't think the injury lines up without it being related to a trade.  They are just doing it better than most teams by not stating it as "trade related reasons".  Did he come up lame in the last game?  Will he actually go to IR?  I think he will be traded to the highest bidder.

All this talk of him being a "great" PWF is nonsense.  He's not a top hitter in the league, doesn't drive the net with consistency and it's a presence on the ice that other teams need to compensate for.  He is a bigger player with a good shot, that is strong on the puck that gets a decent amount of points.  He can help be a strong complimentary piece for a contender (Would be for us if we were at that point, but we're not), but he's not a player that we build upon especially with his age.

I wonder about a 3way. Morrow might not even sign with us. Peeke has experience playing top pair and could slot next to Hughes right away. Peekes name is out there with Jiricek and Cuelemans coming.

    Van- Jk, Peeke

    Car- Miller

    Cbj- picks, prospects

Probably don’t get the 1st though

If we ended up with Kotkaniemi and Peeke and 3.5M cap room for Miller that would be a win in my books.

Guys on 650 talking about JTM and the Canes. We could retain on JTM this season, and take back JK's contract. So the Canes don't have any cap issues.  Next year's JTM"s raise is (mostly) covered by Staal being a UFA. He's a six mil cap coming off their books.

It's a perfect fit for both teams especially if we get Kotkaniemi, a strong D prospect and a pick, we meet our needs.

If Miller gets traded, you know the brass is starting to “get” the market and the forum here.

Of course you know what that means next…. :D

Sure hope so.  Bringing in the new guard.  If people think Miller is tough (He's not really, just has a tough look on his face), Tree is as tough as they come.  That is the level of deterrent we need for our skilled players.  Tree and Schenn on the backend meets the need very well.

I'm just curious as to how the negotiations went.  I mean did Nashville refuse the deal unless Tampa included their 5th round pick?  I mean when do you stop negotiating with something like that?  Does it depend who is more drunk?

I can’t even fathom it.  In most situations I would say Jeannot for a 2nd alone is fair.  The rest is beyond imagination.

Why move Myers now?  Why not wait until next tdl and actually get something for him?  It's not like they're competing for a Cup next season

All depends on the roster adds.  If we get Morrow in a Miller trade, sign Livingstone/Schenn and retain Bear, we should move him to not block the future but if those things don’t happen, you’re right, we could just wait and get something better next deadline.

Let’s just keep JT. At worst he is a 60-70 point guy. Whatever. The problem we have are the OELs and Myers, not JT.

    Three very different situations:

-Miller’s value will drop after this year but this deadline he could return three strong young pieces for our major surgery.

-OEL has been hampered by no defensive system and overcompensating for weak RDs. I still believe he is worth his contract and his perceived value is not there for a trade.  Buyout talk on OEL is complete nonsense.

-Myers needs to go because his offence has mostly left him and he is not committed to being a defensive D.  He still roams around where he shouldn’t too often.  Retain and move him for whatever you can.
