Joe Thornton was a generational talent such as Ovi & Sid.

I'd have to go with generational too. He didn't have that pedigree of being a 1st overall pick, nor was he guy who was highly touted in NA before his draft, sure... but his career achievements and accolades speak for themselves. Orr and Lidstrom are clearly the #1 & #2 dmen of all time respectively.
How about Forsberg though? I personally wouldn't consider him to be generational, but many Swedes will tell you that they think that Forsberg was the best Swede of all-time and not Lidstrom. Forsberg may had tended to lean in the generational category while he was still playing, but unfortunately as his career continued to dwindle down, his foot was basically made of glass. That could be a testament to how hard he played the game, but I'll bet that if it weren't for injuries, people would be having the 'generational' conversation about him more often.
You can't throw the word generational around too loosely, but I don't see how you couldn't include Lidstrom in that category. I'm not sure if at any point he was ever at one point the VERY BEST player in the league, but if anyone ever made the argument that he was (or as close as can be) to it, then fair enough. I like the way @luckylager put it: he redefined the position.

@luckylager Joe was Decade Defining, I was wrong. Ill admit it. @Herberts Vasiljevs Lidstrom is Generational. Jagr is Generational as well. As for Forsberg... If I was choosing a team I would pick Lidstrom over Forsberg. He may have been the best forward to ever come out of Sweden but not the best player.
