LTIR isn't free cap per se as you need to include that cap number in the off season and then you can put the player on LTIR when the season starts. Yeah it's dumb they retroactively changed it, but there was an easy loophole of LTIR to get around it. Luongo easily qualified for LTIR, but Florida told him to retire instead. That's why, I don't blame the NHL because it was so easy to get around the change and avoid the recapture penalty. It was a rule change that was mostly an empty threat. I never considered the possibility of getting hit with recapture because with Luongo's failing hips and knees, I thought it was automatic Luongo would end his career on LTIR. I didn't foresee Florida wanting him to retire instead because they benefited more from that and had no problem screwing us. That's why, I blame them over the NHL.

Shocking cause he said he wanted playoffs and a short term deal to the avs would have been a no brainer if that was true. Well I'm glad he didn't go to the avs cause that would have made them too stacked!

One, point of clarification here. The NHL isn't at fault here. The canucks very much could have taken advantage of the LTIR loophole like other teams. However Florida told Luongo to retire instead of going on LTIR and since his loyalty was with Florida now and they were going to offer him a job, he listened to them and retired instead of going on LTIR which he could have easily with his injuries. I blame Florida for the recapture penalty and not the NHL here. They chose to screw us, so &^@# Dave Tallon! I'm glad he got fired!

Him with the Oilers is the smart move since he needs 1st pp time on a show me deal. However, the ironic thing is even if he lights it up with Oilers other teams will say it's the McDavid/Draisaitl effect and still lowball him.

It's a bit surprising as he could be similar to JT Miller and thrive with a bigger role, since Tampa is so stacked. I bet being 30 years old already is the big mark against him. Also, goes to show you how much owners are willing to spend in this covid world as he easily gets traded last year like Miller or would have been snapped up on waivers immediately. I would be interested on a cheap deal like that 3.9m I saw floated around. Don't think he would actually sign for that, but he played much better once Babcock was fired.

Loved tanev, but 4 years was too much for him. Benning is having a great off season so far by thinking big picture and not locking into long term with Markstrom and tanev. Money wise both those contracts are fine but they don't work for us because Demko has always been the goalie of the future and tanev's deal is 2 years too long. It's all about preparing for petey and Hughes big paydays and Benning is doing a great job so far. Just don't overpay for barrie now!

Barrie would need to take a cheap show me deal. However, with Quinn running the pp, he would face the same situation as he would in Toronto, so vancouver would be a poor fit for his show me deal. He needs a team that will let him run the pp.

So long Markstrom and thanks for all the fish! I would much rather him go to Calgary than Edmonton because I think the flames with Markstrom are less scary than the Oilers with Markstrom. McDavid and Draisaitl could run and gun to wins with Markstrom behind them, but Johnny Hockey and Monahan will still be playoffs ghosts with Markstrom!
