    What are those bonus' about?

Seems like a lot of money for a rook. Anyone care to elaborate?

Standard performance bonuses that top picks usually get. Pettersson and Hughes have them. However, maxing out the bonuses is usually reserved for very high picks. Pettersson was the first 5th overall pick to get max bonuses.

You’re missing NJ. They’ve had a recapture penalty on the books for Kovalchuk since he bolted to Russia.  It’s not a huge amount but the structure of the penalty is the same. The total cap savings spread over years that remained in the contract.  He only played a couple years on the contract and there were several years left so there wasn’t much cap savings to have to pay back compared to the years.

Yeah. I remember kovy. His recapture was negligible and only 250k.

Quick, Carter, Keith and Crosby also have active recapture contracts.

Good point. Not sure why he didn't include those contracts as it seemed too few to me.

I dont think LTIR is just free cap; so a player retiring is the best option to Florida. Im not knowledgable myself so I'm just posting in guessing terms. We'll see how Ferland is handled.

LTIR isn't free cap per se as you need to include that cap number in the off season and then you can put the player on LTIR when the season starts. Florida just preferred Luongo retired instead cause their cap recapture was negligible and they saved real money.

    https://www.tsn.ca/luongo-retires-hitting-canucks-with-3-million-cap-recapture-penalty-1.1328964

Luongo made the rare choice to walk away with three years remaining on his contract with the Florida Panthers, foregoing $3.62 million in salary. Playing through lingering hip pain, he could have easily found support from a doctor to say his body was no longer fit for play, leaving him eligible to collect that cash on long-term injured reserve.

The Florida Panthers, who did not enjoy as much of a benefit in cap savings compared to cash, will also be hit with a $1.09 million charge for three seasons.

The Panthers actually encouraged Luongo to retire instead of seeking a long-term injury exception. For one, the cap penalty is somewhat negligible. Plus, the retirement path saves them $3.6 million in real cash and also reduces the headache of carrying a player on LTIR, which impacts cap flexibility.

The Los Angeles Kings were the only team previously to be hung with a cap recapture penalty after they terminated Mike Richards’ contract in 2015. Other players with back-diving deals, such as, Pronger, Hossa and Zetterberg escaped by virtue of LTIR. , Weber, Parise and Suter are the only other active players eligible for the penalty.

The league is to blame because retroactively punishing contracts THEY approved is bush league at best.

Yeah it's dumb they retroactively changed it, but there was an easy loophole of LTIR to get around it.  Luongo easily qualified for LTIR, but Florida told him to retire instead. That's why, I don't blame the NHL because it was so easy to get around the change and avoid the recapture penalty.  It was a rule change that was mostly an empty threat.

I never considered the possibility of getting hit with recapture because with Luongo's failing hips and knees, I thought it was automatic Luongo would end his career on LTIR. I didn't foresee Florida wanting him to retire instead because they benefited more from that and had no problem screwing us. That's why, I blame them over the NHL.

When they revised the rule to let other teams off the hook, but not the Canucks, it was another kick in the nuts.

One, point of clarification here. The NHL isn't at fault here. The canucks very much could have taken advantage of the LTIR loophole like other teams. However Florida told Luongo to retire instead of going on LTIR and since his loyalty was with Florida now and they were going to offer him a job, he listened to them and retired instead of going on LTIR which he could have easily with his injuries. I blame Florida for the recapture penalty and not the NHL here. They chose to screw us, so &^@# Dave Tallon! I'm glad he got fired!

  6. It's a bit surprising as he could be similar to JT Miller and thrive with a bigger role, since Tampa is so stacked.  I bet being 30 years old already is the big mark against him.  Also, goes to show you how much owners are willing to spend in this covid world as he easily gets traded last year like Miller or would have been snapped up on waivers immediately.  Now, Tampa needs to package a draft pick or prospect with him.

  7. Loved tanev, but 4 years was too much for him. Benning is having a great off season so far by thinking big picture and not locking into long term with Markstrom and tanev. Money wise both those contracts are fine but they don't work for us because Demko has always been the goalie of the future and tanev's deal is 2 years too long.

It's all about preparing for petey and Hughes big paydays and Benning is doing a great job so far. Just don't overpay for barrie now!

  8. So long Markstrom and thanks for all the fish! I would much rather him go to Calgary than Edmonton because I think the flames with Markstrom are less scary than the Oilers with Markstrom. McDavid and Draisaitl could run and gun to wins with Markstrom behind them, but Johnny Hockey and Monahan will still be playoffs ghosts with Markstrom!

Speculation on 650 that if Marky gets wooed by Calgary, they will then approach Arizona to see if OEL will add Calgary to his list.  Apparently he and Marky are best buddies.

Marky is best buds with Lindholm, so rather than be the third wheel OEL would rather be in Vancouver! :P

Tweet is not quite accurate.  Vegas wants to trade the full 7M.  They are trying to get a 3rd team involved who would retain 50% of salary and trade him then further at 50% - the cost for the retention is a 2nd + 1st.

Oh well that changes things completely lol. No wonder fleury hasn't been traded yet because I thought vegas was going to retain 50% and send a 2nd round pick!
