If the sweetener is retaining 50% I’d be interested.

The current sweetener is 50% retained + a 2nd round pick, but teams are holding out for a 1st and 2nd! Honestly, I'd take just the 2nd pick for a 3.5m backup for demko! That's an easy 2nd round pick for Benning to pick up and he could let Markstrom walk without worrying about finding Demko a backup.

I'd rather us try to sign Pietrangelo for a shorter term / similar money (6 x 7.5 mil?) without giving up assets. We really need another RH option on defense. Hopefully this is Benning's plan B if this doesn't go through.

Petro already turned down 8x8m from the blues.

Draisaitl has never been considered an overpayment what are you on about? He was nearly a ppg player on an awful team in year one and followed with 105 points in year 2 of the deal.

Huh? Are you forgetting the narrative around that contract? It was widely considered an overpayment and people thought draisaitl took Chiarelli to the cleaners.

Hard to make a case for Petey to make more than Draisaitl if we're being honest $20mil+ for both Petey and Hughes is a stretch at best probably will be more accurately around 15-17 for both.

You can't use the draisaitl contract as a comparable. At the time people thought it was an overpayment and now he outplayed that contract, so he's underpaid now. It would be like saying Petey shouldn't make more than Mackinnon. Contracts like that aren't comparable for players today.

The only kids that got those contracts were from Toronto cause Dubas is synonymous with dumbass, McJesus and Eichel deserve their 10mil+ cause they carry their franchises on their backs. Matthew Tkachuk got 7mil, Sebastian Aho got 8.5m and Leon Draisaitl got 8.5m. Aaron Ekblad and Thomas Chabot got 7.5m and 8m respectively. Those should be the real numbers for Petey and Hughes, and some of those players are on Canadian teams so don't give me that lower tax nonsense. Not those bloated messes of contracts Toronto handed out. Rantanen is a bit high as well at 9.25m, but that's likely as high as I can see Petey getting. Hughes if we're smart is at or slightly above the Chabot contract (8milx8 years).

If we're being honest the Hughes and Pettersson contracts should be in the 8-9m range, on long term deals. Could maybe argue for Petey to get closer to 9.5m if he hits 80+ points 30+ goals like Rantanen has done before he signed his contract. He hit those totals in back to back seasons before signing his deal. I really don't see our kids getting 10+ mil. Even Kucherov didn't get that.

I think Petey is better than Eichel. For all of his points, Buffalo is still a tire fire with Eichel. Vancouver was similar to Buffalo, but Petey and Hughes instantly changed them and have made the canucks winners now. They're both more valuable than Eichel to me. I do think they're our Matthews/Marner, so anything less than those contracts, I would consider a home town discount. I think Montreal screwed up with that lowball contract to Aho, which Carolina didn't think twice about matching. I think Aho undersold himself accepting that offer sheet and should have gotten a bigger contract.

  6. Benning should tell Arizona to take a hike if they want an RoR package. The comparable should be the Subban trade. However, he was an actual Norris trophy winner and Arizona has way less leverage than Nashville did, so they should get a package less than what Subban returned.

I know its like hes unwanted in the league and Arizona would be lucky to get rid if him lol. More than half the league would jump on it if OEL has them on the list

The cap hit is scary. Petey and Hughes are due for 10m+ each unless they take home town discounts.

You guys are hilarious its like you guys are valuing OEL on Eriksson level. Most star defenseman plays well into their mid 30s. OEL apparently is a bad contract but NHL GM would gladly be offering the likes of Pietrangelo something similar cap that will prolly take him to 35. If we offer say 8years at 8mil for hughes when hes 27 you guys be like omg that's a steal.. hypocrites

Petro just finished 4th in Norris voting this season. Oel is good, but he's not a true number 1 like Petro anymore. A lot of people remember a player at their peak and then have a hard time letting go of that image. This isn't the same oel of a few years ago.  Unless the canucks go to a 2 dman pp, then oel will be on the 2nd unit so won't get all those juicy pp points he got in Arizona too.

I guess the myth of Jake being built for the playoffs was just that. A myth and not reality. It's true that a player like Jake should be built for the playoffs, but that requires someone with higher hockey iq and desire to compete and win.  I think Jake like Shane O'Brien is just content to be in the NHL, so he can party and chase women.
