Things can change and we also need him now. I can’t see the Canucks being competitive without an addition like this.

We don't need him now.  If we miss the playoffs, we still get a lottery pick.  We need him for 2021 to make the playoffs. We can't give up on Juolevi until we see what he can do in the NHL because it would be horrible if a 5th overall pick busts for us.

Really, really want Myers. In fact I wanted him at number 10 but we took Hodgson and I believe Buffalo took him like 2 or 3 picks after.

A lot of people would take rookie Myers.  Unfortunately, he peaked his rookie year and never lived up to his potential of that season.  He's not that player today.  It would be like saying you want 18 year old sam bennett today, when he's no longer that player now.

  3. I'd avoid signing Myers this year if it meant going after Barrie next year. Squeeze Vegas for Colin Miller.  If we suck this year, then so be it.  We get another lottery pick in a deep draft.  Sign Barrie next summer and do all you can to make the playoffs for 2021 to avoid giving Tampa a lottery pick.

  4. Damn. I really thought he would go on LTIR like everyone else, but I guess the key difference was everyone else was still on their original team, while Luongo is no longer a Canuck, so he would feel less bad about hitting us with that recapture.  The good news is it's only for 3m for 3 years and not the dreaded 8m it could have been later.  We can handle that caphit without much problem for 3 years.

This is a fickle market, lots to do in town with a high cost of living.  Coming out every year and saying "yeah we are going to suck" is probably not advisable with the type of ownership this team has.  I dont know for certain if he believed what he was saying, but I know enough about hockey to realistically guess when the GM is blowing hot air and when he is not.

I do agree that aquilini probably has some or a lot to do with that.  However, I wish they took the rangers approach which was to inform and prepare their fans for a rebuild without saying they're going to suck.

As a member of the Blueshirt Faithful, we consider you a part of the New York Rangers family, and always want to ensure we share important news about the organization directly with you. Today, we want to talk to you about the future.

As you know, since the 2005-06 season, we have been a highly competitive team. We have played 129 playoff games, won the Presidents' Trophy, reached the Conference Finals three times, as well as the Stanley Cup Final. While we're proud of all those accomplishments - we didn't reach our ultimate goal of bringing the Stanley Cup back to New York.

So as we do every season, we have been continuously evaluating our team, looking for areas that can be improved to enhance our chances of winning. We began the process of reshaping our team this past summer, when we traded for assets that we believe will help us in the years to come. As we approach the trade deadline later this month and into the summer, we will be focused on adding young, competitive players that combine speed, skill and character. This may mean we lose some familiar faces, guys we all care about and respect. While this is part of the game, it's never easy. Our promise to you is that our plans will be guided by our singular commitment: ensuring we are building the foundation for our next Stanley Cup contender.

There are no fans like Rangers fans. You are passionate, loyal and true. You fill The Garden every night, and we always know there will be a strong showing from RangersTown in every building across the League. We do not take your support for granted. We appreciate that you have always stood by us, and we ask you to remain by our side as we undertake this exciting new chapter filled with promise and change.

We will keep you informed as this process takes shape. Thank you for the incredible loyalty, pride and respect you show to the New York Rangers, each and every day.

My point is if you expected anything more than what has happened here in the past 4 or so years then you had unrealistic expectations.

IMHO Jimmy should be let go if they continue to flounder from this point on.

Then Benning had unrealistic expectations since his goal before every season was playoffs and he routinely said that before each season.

Doubt anyone disagrees that he started with an almost empty cupboard.

However finishing at the bottom of the standings and picking high in the 1st round isn't some sort of plan or accomplishment.

Don't forget that picking high wasn't even the plan.  Benning's goal was playoffs every year since he was hired.  We're just lucky we missed the playoffs despite his efforts to make them because without #TeamTank, we would have no Pettersson.

Uh... did you even look at the poll results? This forum is like the exact opposite of HFBoards.

How is a pro-Benning post a breath of fresh air? It's about all we get here. Just look at this thread as a microcosm lol.

Agreed.  It's well known that cdc is pretty pro benning so the results are predictable, next comes reddit which slants more pro benning, but not as extreme as cdc and then hfboards if you don't want to read just blind homerism like here.  HFboards is where you'll find the best and most realistic takes about the team.

He sure looked like it in the playoffs to me, he was their best dman in that series.

I didn't watch that series, so can't say anything about that.  However, that's not even the argument since big buff was there soaking up all the minutes and Myers was routinely getting around 4th in ice time among dmen, so if he looked good to you it helped that he was playing sheltered minutes.  I'm fine with Myers being a 4th dman for us.  I'm not fine with paying a 4th dman 7m.

They don't need an elite, scoring dman, they need someone who can prevent goals and someone who can take some of the hard mins from eddie and bump tanev down the depth chart on the right side......desperately.  A depth dman won't do that and when tanev inevitably goes down with an injury, there'll be no one to handle those top 3 mins again.

But Myers isn't that guy, which is the point.  From all accounts he struggled badly when big buff went out with injury and he was forced to play more minutes against the other teams top lines.

What's interesting is how quickly it CAN be improved.  Recall a few years back how bad it was, then suddenly Hutton emerged and Tryamkin came in and some clouds lifted.  There are only 6 spots, so you change out a couple and things suddenly look bright.  One good trade and a quality UFA signing and it can make quite the difference.

Isn't this an argument against signing Myers, since you argue things can change quickly, so why sign a bad long term contract this summer? I actually haven't read the whole thread so am not sure if you're in favour of a 7 year 49m deal for Myers.

  12. 2 minutes ago, Hutton Wink said:

Then what are some "smart changes", and ones that are actually realistic considering the market, free agency, and salary cap?

Signing depth stop gap dmen, instead of overpaying for a number 4/5/6 dman on huge long term deal because you're trying to rush the rebuild.  It shouldn't be trying to load up and going for bust at making the playoffs this year.  I don't understand why the timeline for making the playoffs has to be this year.  A rebuild takes time.  I was thinking playoffs in 2-3 years from now and not so much this year.

The 2020 draft is supposed to be pretty good, so at least our pick is protected there if we're bad again this year.  Add that pick, Pod and any other draft pick that pans out to our young core, then by 2022 we should have a pretty good team.  I know people are impatient, but rebuilding takes time.  Throwing out a bad contract to try to speed up the rebuild is a bad idea.  A Panarin contract would legitimately speed up the rebuild and would be a game changer and something I would be happy about.  A Myers contract might speed it up a little, but more in terms of speeding up to mediocrity instead of contenders like a Panarin would.  I'd hate to end up like Minnesota.  Constant playoffs, but constant early exits.

I don't understand this logic.  Just because the canucks need change, doesn't mean they need to give out a bad contract.  Sign depth stop gap guys like Jordie Benn, etc.  If there's no elite level D available in this year's free agency crop, then so be it and accept that and walk away instead of paying absurd prices for 2nd tier dmen.

People aren't afraid of spending big money on players that are worth it.  If it was Panarin signing a huge long term deal, then people like me and everyone else would be rolling out the red carpet.  I just hate the logic that the canucks need to hand out a bad long term deal just for the sake of change.  Imagine if the oilers or leafs were thinking about giving out this deal to myers.  Everyone here would be rightfully laughing at them, but because some people have to defend every move Benning makes, they'll just accept and defend the Myers deal when they wouldn't if it was any other team, but the canucks.

Your statement is a strawman because we do want change, but we want smart changes, not dumb ones.

  14. Man I've been listening to all the tributes on 1040 and it's just so sad. It's hard not to tear up listening to them. It's cool to hear tributes from Mike Gillis and Laurence Gilman as they were glowing in their praise for him. Looking at that family picture is tough knowing his kids will grow up without their dad.

Both Burke and Kypreos talked about how Luongo would fail his physical next year and ride out his contract on LTIR. I found it quite bold to make those statements considering Luongo just played and won a game earlier in the day. So Luongo is healthy today but he won't be in September of 2019...hmmm.

Henrik Zetterberg played all 82 games in his last year and then went on LTIR for the next season due to his back.  Luongo already misses a bunch of games due to injuries, unlike zetterberg, so he can easily go on LTIR due to his hips/knees.
