  1. he also obviously watches a ton of video of these players, so yea you have to take his view with a grain of salt, but it's also another perspective and I very much welcome that. As we know, year in and year out there are a lot of surprises on draft day, and it never seems to follow the "consensus".

  2. He's based in Florida and has no hockey background. There is a reason why NHL clubs and scouting organizations have regional scouts. I've yet to hear a single person say they have ever seen him at games and I talk to quite a few people in the business. They even ask, "Who is this guy?"

Say what people will about MacKenzie, MaGuire and Button but at least they go to games all of the time. Going to games doesn't immediately make a person a good evaluator but I believe NOT going means you can't be.

It just really bothers me that there is this guy in Florida watching video only and he's got this web cred above Canadians and Americans from the north who actually put in the hours with little credit.

EDIT: I know from someone who has actually talked to him that as of two years ago he'd never been to Canada and had no travel budget. Maybe that has changed but I doubt it

Asked the question for you, and out of my own curiousity, theminster:

Hey Cory, was wondering how often, if at all, do you get to travel to Canada and watch some of these guys in the CHL live? Also, how much of your opinions on players are based off your own actual viewings of players as oppose to just talking to scouts? No disrespect intended, just curious really.

Cory Pronman: Very fair question which I would ask if I were in your position. I live in NY (from QC), did mostly AHL and college scouting in first half. Did bi-weekly trips through ONT and QC in 2nd half. One trip out west during the top prospect week. Saw guys during international camps as well that came out east. QC, Ont are mostly my views. WHL, high school and Europe (depending on area/player) I lean on sources. Proportion depends on players. If it's a high-end prospect, I make calls. I wouldn't put a guy top 30 based on a couple of views and no extra info but a guy like Shane Gersich was a personal gut call for example.

  3. A little off topic, but I wonder if the nucks will take a shot at Horvat's cousin in the 2015 draft. He's projected to go in the top 10.

Konecny is likely a top 5 pick, so I doubt we finish that low. If we had kept Torts then I think we'd definitely have a good shot..

  4. In the early part of the 1st period, a 2-minute eye test was enough to see how nervous the young Ducks players were. The talented but inexperienced defencemen and goalie were the Achilles' heel of Anaheim and the kings cut right through them. Game Over.

Yeah they certainly have a bright future, but they're simply overmatched.

Speaking of gaborik, goal again. Kopitar has been on par with Toews this year and throughout the playoffs.

  5. Here's Pronman's list of the players he think that will end up being the best in this draft :

1 Aaron Ekblad D Barrie OHL
2 Sam Bennett C Kingston OHL
3 William Nylander RW Modo SHL
4 Sam Reinhart C Kootenay WHL
5 Nikolaj Ehlers LW Halifax QMJHL
6 Kevin Fiala LW HV71 SHL
7 Leon Draisaitl C Prince Albert WHL
8 Michael Dal Colle LW Oshawa OHL
9 Kasperi Kapanen RW KalPa Liiga
10 Haydn Fleury D Red Deer WHL

Edit: Sorry, just saw it was posted. Interesting list none the less

  6. Who would you guys rather have drop, Dal Colle or Draisaitl?

For me personally I would want Draisaitl. He reminds of Kopitar in the way he uses his body to protect the puck. He carried his team offensively this season with 105 points in 64 games with the second best forward on his team who is an over-ager having only 72 points in 71 games.

I like Leon, but I love Dal Colle. I think he's a slam dunk star and I've been praying since the start of the year that we'd somehow have a crack at drafting him.

  7. With Burrows career as a Canuck perhaps coming to an end, we cold use another player like him more than another player like Shinkaruk or Jensen.

But But Burrows is small and undersized, after all only 1 inch and 12 lbs heavier than Ehlers

  8. Here's something that people need to realize about the Sedins.

In the 2010-2011 season Daniel Sedin put up 42 points on the powerplay. Henrik put up 35.

The following season without Ehrhoff, Daniel put up 25 and Henrik put up 27.

This season Henrik was on pace for 21 points, and Daniel was on pace for 20.

Anyone that knows the Sedins, knows that their bread and butter is the powerplay. Without a strong powerplay, they're never going to be point per game players again. That's biggest area Gillis failed to fix.

That's why the first order of business for the new GM needs to be going out and getting one of Boyle, Ehrhoff, Letang, or Niskanen. Without a player like this, we might as well trade the Sedins now, because their production will continue to stay at around 60 points.

Agreed for the most part, except there's a good reason San Jose hasn't resigned Boyle. He's clearly lost a step and his hands aren't what they once were. I think the only viable option would be Niskanen, maybe Letang if they're still interested in Kesler(obviously we'd have to add). We'd probably have to overpay Niskanen to lure him here as well and we'd have to convince one of our top 4 to waive their NTC, which is much easier said than done.
  9. Maybe you should check our Burr at the WC he is back doing what he does best, getting in the greasy areas, drawing penaltys, pking like a mofo. He will make guys like you eat his jock next year.

He's also got one assist in 4 games mostly playing on the first line..

I think buying out Burrows would be the wrong decision but his best days are way behind him. He's still excellent at all the things that you've mentioned, but we need him to do that on top of put up points. On any other line other than with the Sedins, he'd be very lucky to crack 20 goals . If he has any trade value, I'd be receptive to moving on from Burrows.

  10. bottom line canucks aint getting ekblad unless florida is stupid enough to make a trade. only thing I can see happening is 6th pick prospect; probably someone like gaunce and a top 6 d from our end. but someone like ekblad only comes every couple years and florida is not given that up as there team is already rebuilding and looking good. ekblad #wheres he goinnnnnn #next doughty

There are a lot of scouts who say Ekblad most likely tops out as a no. 2 d man. I would imagine Dale Tallon still has nightmares about taking Cam Barker third overall in Chicago.

  11. Jagr 6'3 240

    Ilya kovalchuk 6'3 230

    Ovechkin 6'3 230

    Talylor Pyatt 6'3 235

    Dustin Penney 6'4 247

    Bertuzzi 6'3 235

All of them except for kovalchuk are nhl regulars. I avoided cherry picking retired players.

Chris Stewart is over 230, Joel Ward is just under and of course Milan Lucic is over 230 as well.

In Ritchie's case he needs to drop some fat, but by some accounts he still has room to add to his frame. He probably ends up at 225lb as he's pretty tall, 6'3.
