The guys in Sportsnet 650 did mention something similar. That he wasn't that bad with the Islanders due to his defensive game but also pointed out that when Horvat's defensive game improves his offense suffers and vise versa and can't seem to do both at the same time.

But who knows maybe he figures this out with a Lou Lamoriello ran hockey organization. And I guess next season we figure out who the real Bo Horvat is.

I know it took Kesler a long time to get the offense going, but he truly mastered the defensive side alongside Burrows, and then he worked on his offense which coincided with his bump up to 2nd line centre (and Burrows then to the first line with the Sedins).

It depends what you need and how patient you can be with players. If you don't need instant scoring forwards, you can build them defensively and then have them work on offense once you move them up the line-up.

Horvat seems to be confused on what he is; as he was a faceoff specialist who was supposed to be good defensively, but then transitioned to full goal-scorer without fully developing the defensive side, and then he was forced back to being a two-way guy, but his offense never fully developed either (AKA he "cheated" to get points and goals).

I see all of Montgomery, Gallant, and Bednar keeping their jobs.

Gotta remember that States' teams aren't as hasty as Canadian markets where everyone knee jerks and overreacts all the time.

Cooper kept his job after being swept by Columbus and that patience helped lead to 3 cup runs and 2 wins.

Winning a Cup should also give you some time, especially since the Avs had key injuries that would have flipped the series in their favour.

When they eventually get fired, they will be hot commodities around the league.

Okay so offensively Horvat had a poor playoffs…. But defensively he was sound.

Why did Horvat struggle with offence?

    It’s simple.

    38.3% oZS in all situations

    34.8% oZS at even strength.

Horvat was utilized as a shutdown player and his CORSI at ES, despite having under 40%oZS

    51.5% CORSI

Horvat drove possession BIG TIME. They just couldnt score.
His line had 62SCF and 31SCA

37/62 SCF were high danger areas

14/31 SCA were high danger areas

Horvat was on the ice for 4 goals for and only 2 against. He also scored a short handed goal for the Isles.

Sorokin also had a 2.5+ GSAA against Horvat and his line.

Chirp his offence all you want, he was not put in a position to succeed offensively. He was put in a position to stop offence, to which he did a fantastic job. Only on the ice for 2 of the 16 goals against. His goalie had a .957sv% at even strength when Horvat was on the ice.

    This is interesting to see.

Kesler got praised for shutting down Toews in 2011, but Kesler also didn't put up many points (if I recall, no goals either).

The problem with the Isles is they didn't have enough offense to go around to cope for Horvat neutralizing the opposition. They needed to put somebody else in that role and let Horvat make stuff happen offensively.

I didn't pay attention to the Isles and Canes series, so I'm not sure if Horvat was given shutdown duties against a certain line or not, but it would be interesting to see if the Canes tried to get away from Horvat if that was the case.

What happens to the cap hit if OEL retires?

It would go away since he signed the contract when he was younger than 35 (or 35 year old season).

However, I don't see this happening, and hope a healthy OEL can rebound to some degree next year.

I wouldn't be opposed to seeing Tryamkin back with the Canucks, but role and expectations are things that the team must dictate and not him or his agent.

Given the Canucks' apparent interest in Valtteri Pulli, there is interest in a tall, physically imposing Dman who can skate. Tryamkin would fit that bill, albeit he is much older than Pulli. Still, Tryamkin may have value in a depth or 3rd pairing role until he can prove his mettle.

If Tryamkin wants a big contract and/or to immediately slot into a team's top-4, then he should look elsewhere. His run from several years ago was fun to follow from draft day to his last NHL game, and it at least showed some promise at that time. I don't think Tryamkin has done enough in the KHL to indicate that he has risen far above that level in the time he has been away though.

I'm curious what teams will offer him as well.

He's big, skates well, and is right-side so there are going to be interesting offers. Maybe we see him offered a multi-year deal (3X3), a spicy one-year deal (1X4) or a one-year show me (1X1.5).

While I do agree we need a couple more game breakers to be cup contenders, until OEL and Boeser are off the books, we will be a mediocre playoff team.

Peteys line is solid.. And it'll only get better as Petey isn't even in his prime yet

Miller is starting to really own the 2C spot and I see that as good as any second line the the league.

We start falling apart in the bottom 6.

We need Hogz to make the jump and play well. We need either Raty or Karlsson to play well.

Joshua has been a really good addition. So has Aman. Bottom 6 is close but not there yet.

On defense, Hronek addition was key. We need him to play well.

One or 2 more signings and moving out Myers and OEL will be the key to the franchise. Hughes much like Petey isn't even in his prime yet.

Hughes defence is transition/open ice is one of the best on the team. His board play and battle in front of the net is what hurts him and we need a good partner for him.

I see OEL being moved in 2 years when we need the cap space.

We don't need to that yet but it will happen when we are on the cusp and need to sign a key player.

I like this timeline when it comes to OEL being moved.

We definitely need a couple d-men to round out the top-4 (Hronek and Hughes are in the top two pairings, but we need others to fill out the top pairings).

I think we have forwards who can come up and fill spots in that group, but not on our defense.

I think the next couple years will tell us what we have as we try to bring young guys up to the NHL.

You know there is a middle ground between trading them and benching them right?

It’s called playing them less and giving some rookies more opportunity. Tocchett is playing the roster to win right now which is crazy.

Hughes should not be playing 28 minutes a game and Petey should not be playing top minutes in every situation. Demko should be playing once every 3 games after coming back from a serious injury. How would you feel if one of these guys suffered a long term injury from playing too much? How would that help next season?

We know these guys are studs, they’re not proving anything. What we need to see right now is what else we have. And if we win with rookies playing big minutes in key situations fantastic! If we lose well it gives them lessons to learn from.

Playing the system and learning better habits yes. Riding our top guys to squeeze out wins right now no.

I agree, and I hope they will switch to a pre-season strategy near the end of March (I'd prefer earlier, but I don't see it happening).

We have tough competitors who won't want to rest, so seeing PP2 out more than PP1 will likely be done closer to the end of the season.

    Key word being type.

Not true. I love the current player, and his extension is below market value. Just simply not a fit with our timeline. It's an entirely situational problem.

I think if we didn't have OEL (and other big deals for underperforming misfits like Boeser, Garland, and Myers), then JT could stay and make sense.

We just have too many bad contracts that prevent us from fixing our defense and being a balanced team.

Glad he's getting the help he needs.  Plenty of guys who got through the program who I'm sure would be more than willing to offer him support if he asks as well.

Rooting for him to make a full recovery on and off the ice.

Corey Hirsch would be very pleased with him getting the help.

Goalies face so much pressure with very few jobs out there, but I think Knight is giving himself the best chance right now by entering the program.

Sigh no D in the top 10??

That's the biggest issue for me.

You want to hit on one of the top forwards, otherwise you're just going to get a "good" forward.

We need Good+ d-men and great forwards (centres), so an early pick is huge for that.

We can try to hit on a d-man with other picks (hopefully we scoop some up).

I would like to see us draft in the top 4 and pick a forward, then use most of the other picks on d-men.
