Even the 2012 Kings were considered contenders by those who looked beyond the standings. They were like the 2019 Blues -- underachieved in the regular season, but were always a legit contender.

We absolutely should not be trying to just get in the playoffs and hope for a miracle run. A Cinderella team has never won the cup in the salary cap era. At best, they make the finals and lose.

As you said, we need to build a team that can be a contender for several years. Benning did the opposite of this, and I hope the current management team doesn't repeat those mistakes.

The 2012 playoffs was a good year for the Kings to go on a run because they faced relatively weak competition for a playoff (no Daniel Canucks, an overachieving Blues team, a surprising but underwhelming Coyotes team, and then a Devils team led by two wingers and an old Brodeur in the Finals).

I think Calgary in 04 was a true cinderella team, which of course was right before the salary cap era, but usually there aren't true underdogs in the cap era (Montreal would have been one, and Nashville who got swept would be another).

Really. You think that Petey, a top 20 forward and Hughes, a top 10 defenceman are lesser than a 1 or 2OA?

This would only apply to a generational talent. Bedard maybe. Definitely not this draft class!

Well for context, the person I quoted was responding to Stamkos, MacKinnon, Hedman, and Landeskog as the first and 2nd overall players, which I feel are above Petey (or at least used to be).

You are right about the draft class mattering, as RNH was a first overall, as well as busts like Yakupov.

I feel like if Petey and Hughes were drafted first or 2nd overall, they would be solid picks, but a bit underwhelming for those positions.

Saturday July 9th will be the measuring stick for the Lions - Blue Bombers look to be the team to beat again

I'm looking forward to this game as well, as I think the Lions have a shot to contend this year.

Let's be realistic with our expectations with this player people.

Let's see him in camp and go from there.

A lot can be determined by the shape he shows up in camp.

Yes, a good camp and he can be a top 10 player, a bad camp and he will only be top 50 :P

I dare say, within the next two seasons or so we will see a changing of the guards.

    Boston.

    Washington.

    Pittsburgh.

All will be aging out.  A decade of highly competitive play has pushed them to the cap, reduced their youth and assets.

The time for teams like Columbus, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Long Island is now to push those aging out teams to the bubble

That is true! I think Florida (have to show it wasn't a fluke), Carolina, and New York Rangers (overachieving, but should be elite soon) were the new up and coming elite teams, and they go with the Tampa Bay Lightning to fill out the Top 4 in the East.

Then you have the regular contenders that you mentioned (Boston, Washington, and Pittsburgh), along with the Leafs. That's the current 8 in the East.

There was a great deal of separation between these 8 teams and the non-playoff teams, so it would take a fall from one team and a solid rise (New Jersey is looking like a good bet) from another one to change it up.

The West has a lot of variability, as Colorado is the lone Elite team, with potential for movement throughout.

So whereas 1 or 2 teams in the East might swap playoff spots, the West could see 5 different teams next year, with Colorado the favourite to win again.

The seas also parted our first cup run and we all know how that worked out.   In 94 we probably shouldn't have made it past the first round but we did.   And after that were the best team the next two series.... final one we weren't the best team the first game but McLean won it for us ... but as the series went one were at least their match if not the better team.   About as even a series as they come only 2 goals separated us .. Bure was on fire when he got ejected for a high stick (we likely would have won that game .... too bad) and NYR were just getting weaker and weaker ... we kept getting stronger and stronger.   Game 7.   Ugh ... if they didn't add extra rest days Linden might not of had the game he had - but we for sure had them on the ropes ... It's a what if that bugs me to this day.

They would have won if it was a best of 9.

As for the 2011 Canucks, they went on their run a year too soon, as the 2012 playoffs were much easier, or a year too late (facing Philly without a goalie in the Finals in 2010).

Sometimes the outright best team wins the Cup (these past 2 years with Tampa), but usually it's a good team with good luck.

You could say that about the 81/82 Canucks, and for that matter the '94 Canucks. Those two teams barely got into the playoffs, but, got on a run, got some fabulous goaltending, played with toughness, had some top level talent, (Gradin, Bure, Linden), all while qualifying as the 8th seed in their division.

I think the difference is that the 94 Canucks were competitive in the Finals, whereas Dallas and especially Montreal were easily handled.

So yes those 2 teams made it to the Finals, but were revealed as frauds once there.

Hell, even the 2012 Kings who were 8th seed got fortunate with all the upsets so that they had one of the weakest sets of teams on their way to a Cup.

Luck plays a huge part, and sometimes it's better to be lucky (minimal injuries and favourable matchups) than good, but it's better to be lucky AND good.

Maybe if the Jets traded Sheifele, which is possible seeing as they're at odds, I believe. It would open up a space for Miller. Then they'd have Miller-Dubois down the middle.

Could there be a Miller for Scheifele and a 2nd trade possibility?

I think we're better off trading Miller for a whole different package, as the downgrade is not worth it (Scheifele is not a guy you win with IMO).

I think Jets take this deal and run.

So where did we say we have to take someone from Chytil's draft? Is that a pre-requisite? You do realize he was drafted in 2017 an its 2022...so there's 5 years (soon) of prospects we could look at.

Secondly, Chytil was arguably the main piece of that offer, Lundquist was drafted a year later and has only played 25 games in the NHL

The other part was a pick (late first).

When you are trading your best player, who is an Elite center, you have to get back the potential for elite back. What are you expecting? You want a Kelser 2.0 deal? Do Lucas Sbisa, Nick Bonino and a first make you happy? Because that's pretty much the same deal and we have a player not asking to be traded to only one team and hold all the cards.

Because let's be real, one playoff heater does not make Chytil the next Patrice Bergeron dude..

Too many here want to scream they are right because of 12 games in the playoffs.

Funny how the same people will scream JB was wrong for overvaluing the performance of prospects like Juolevi in brief tournaments (aka WJC).

    Funny...how that works

And no, I don't want Cody Glass, but the hyperbolic binary argument is also funny. Just because someone doesn't think a Kesler 2.0 trade is enough, doesn't mean they want a center who seems to have busted. Perhaps it means, the value offered by NYR was not enough.

Interestingly, the smarter hockey minds, who run the show, agreed.

Could become Ville Leino after his one hot playoff, while he was also fairly young.
