Aren't we close to where the Soilers were when they had a young group of guys they were trying to build around a few years back: Nuge, Hall, Eberle?  They soon figured out their young core guys weren't good enough to be a top team, even if they build a great support group.  So they went into a bottom feeder rebuild and got lucky with the draft.  The LOSER LEAFS went into their deep diving rebuild to get Matthews and their young key core.

Is our young key core like that Coiler team, or more like the LOSER LEAFS have now?  Should we KABOOM it all or try to build a great supporting cast around our young key core?

IMHAO we need to commit to one or the other, and stop trying to do both.

I agree! Our top-end guys aren't good enough and we don't have a good defense.

Bedard would be a huge, but impossible piece.

Hard to build out of this, so better to tear it down and start again.

  2. I feel like there's no trust in this core. With the Sedins, we knew we were building around them and trying to find the pieces to make it work, but there doesn't seem to be anything sustainable to build around here.

I think building from the net out would have been a better idea, where it sucks to not score goals, but it's more structured and you can find someone to score easier than to find a whole team identity

Hasn't worn a Canuck uni since 16-17 and folks still talk about him returning to play for us, I can't remember the last time an ex-Canuck got this kind of attention.

Kirill Koltsov was a d-man I wanted to come over, but never did.

Not an ex-canuck per se, but I do remember a few wanting him to come over :P

  5. Focus on yourself and cut ties. Hell, you don't even have to say goodbye.

Maybe it's something years later that you go back to, but definitely move on and focus on yourself. Meet new people, do new things, and just try to live life.

Time helps with healing, so please be patient with yourself.

I would agree with that statement too. I think his reputation as a two way center is exaggerated a bit. I think Bo was a very good defensive center in junior, but as his NHL career has evolved, he has shown to be much more heavily slanted towards being power scoring center than a two way center. He plays the role, but he doesn't exactly excel in that role, however, Bo has shown to improve some aspect of his game on a yearly basis so perhaps he grows into being better defensively.

I too think a deal is plausible under 7mil if you give him more term and clause protection. I think it all comes down to how much does he actually want. Does he want somewhere between 45-50 mil or is he expecting 52+ mil.

I think the progression of Kesler and Horvat are quite different; where Kesler really owned defensively and then grew offensively, then added a lethal shot, Horvat has improved skating and focused more on offense, but also getting a bit better defensively each year.

I think Kesler being used as the main shutdown worked well, whereas Horvat would be better suited as a two-way guy who should get you points without costing you defensively.

I still think a great shutdown center would be beneficial to at least split roles with Horvat.

  7. Bridge deals are usually given to players coming off their ELC where the cap doesn't work for a big deal or the team isn't convinced enough to commit long-term.

Bo is an established player and will go for what he is worth, and it will be a long-term contract.

Huggy comes in at #4 on Pronman’s list of the top players and prospects under 23:

    https://theathletic.com/3509131/2022/08/29/nhl-players-prospects-rankings-under-23/

Ahead of him on the list are his brother Jack, Seider, and Zegras.

Hughes is one of only five players (Tkachuk is #5) to make Pronman’s “bubble elite” tier (highest ranking he gives to the current list of under-23’s).

Here’s his writeup (article is probably paywall):

    4. Quinn Hughes, D, Vancouver

    22 years old | 5-foot-10 | 170 pounds | Shoots left

    Drafted: No. 7 in 2018
    Skating: Elite
    Puck skills: NHL average
    Hockey sense: High-end
    Compete: NHL average

Analysis: Hughes had a monster season, coming just under a point/game as a 22-year-old defenseman in the NHL and playing major minutes for the Canucks. He’s dynamic with the puck due to his elite skating and playmaking ability. Hughes has a distinct skating stride that makes him highly elusive at both ends and allows his game to have a lot of pace. He makes highly skilled and creative plays with the puck at a high frequency as well. He’ll always be an offense-tilted player, but his defense should be good enough given his mobility and Hughes got regular PK time for the first time this season.

I would have Quinn over Zegras, but thye must have valued Zegras being younger.

Hard to know yet. Was playing on a really high profile Russian team. Looks good in those practice clips. Pre-season all eyes will be on him.

    Seems to play a responsible game, if there's any validity that would translate to the NHL just based on his stats;

      Regular Season Playoffs
Season Team Lge GP G A Pts PIM +/- GP G A Pts PIM
    2014-15 CSKA Moscow KHL 12 1 2 3 0 6 1 0 0 0 0
    2015-16 CSKA Moscow KHL 15 1 2 3 0 5 -- -- -- -- --
    2016-17 CSKA Moscow KHL 34 6 9 15 6 11 1 0 0 0 2
    2017-18 CSKA Moscow KHL 45 13 12 25 12 21 15 4 1 5 5
    2018-19 St. Petersburg SKA KHL 58 12 19 31 20 23 9 0 0 0 0
    2019-20 St. Petersburg SKA KHL 49 14 19 33 6 20 4 3 1 4 0
    2020-21 St. Petersburg SKA KHL 57 18 19 37 14 17 15 4 2 6 4
    2021-22 St. Petersburg SKA KHL 45 20 33 53 10 15 16 7 7 14 12

I'm thinking 80G-35A-115 points for this upcoming season

  10. I was kind of a loser growing up, so I had lots of time to commit to sports.

However, when I got more "popular" and starting hanging out with people more, I didn't dedicate myself to sports as much.

It was also easier to do because Vancouver wasn't very good for that stretch, but I used to watch every televised game (especially Saturdays on CBC), but now I don't (if I'm hanging out or whatever).

Losing Jim Hughson was huge, as Saturday games suck if it's not John and John or Chris Cuthbert calling them, and the team is only middle of the pack versus a serious contender.

This goes for other sports as well, though NFL is easier to accommodate for since Sunday and Monday are more like rest days for me.

I still love the Canucks and sports, but I like enjoying life along with it, rather than revolving my life around sports.

My favourite part is where JS says he's a better version of Bergeron, and better looking too, and then JT's face hahaha. Priceless.

Maybe someone can correct me, but aren't we the only one's who can sign him to eight years whereas everyone else is seven? If so, JT signing with us for seven shouldn't be so bad for him, as long as the dollars work. That's why I think a 7X8.25 is what'll end up happening right before camp starts.

You are correct! Free agents can only sign for 7 years, but can re-sign for 8 years with their current team.
