We’ve actually had this rule for years. We implemented it a long time ago to keep GMs from unfairly storing quality young players who aren’t in the NHL yet as a way to circumvent the cap/budget limits. It’s just never been of any consequence before as every RFA of any significance has been dealt with long before the usual Dec. 1st date. That obviously wasn’t the case this year, but it isn’t a rule change, it’s the application of a rule that was already there.

A few savvy GMs took note of the passed deadline and tried to take advantage of the situation. The date was moved back so that teams in this situation can still sign their players, but not moved back so far that the sly GMs that were on top of things feel that things are being manipulated to protect teams who weren’t quite as quick on the draw. So yes, players in that situation gained a lot of leverage. Which, I agree, would be very frustrating to the effected team. But better than losing their quality young players for nothing.

Never realized that but after re-reading the CBA I realize this is true and the rule (though I personally still don't like it :P) was implemented previously. My bad and thanks for the clarification.

    For unsigned but qualified RFAs.

Past that point they become UFAs.

EDIT: I've had a one or two messages that this is "all of a sudden". But for the most part, we've had since March to handle these players.

Honestly, I don't understand this rule change that we have never had in our league and doesn't replicate the real NHL rules.

The RFA rules in real life (and those that in past years have been in our game) have a final date that RFA's need to be signed before being forced to sitting out the NHL season. Even if the player doesn't sign by that date the team still also hold their RFA rights going into the following offseason. (eg: Nylander situation a couple years back)

These rules are set in place to give teams some control over particular players because they don't have the ability to become unrestricted. All of the sudden the rule changes and within a week all RFA players remaining are given as much leverage as UFA status players? I know I don't make decisions around here but rule change makes no sense to me. I'd like to hear others thoughts on tbe situation.

  3. Rumour: The Washington Capitals have been actively shopping both Radko Gudas and Tucker Poolman but have been unable to find suitors for either player. Both defensemen have only one year remaining on their contracts and the team is reportedly looking for draft picks or prospects in exchange for either or both players. Though the Caps already have plenty of depth on the blueline management suggests that they would be willing to keep both dmen going into the season if no team shows considerable interest.

Are we going to consider moving to a format that keeps waivers in effect year round? It really makes no sense for teams to have the freedom to just assign NHL players to the minors before the season starts.

Anyone else have an opinion on this?

  5. Congratulations @Sergei Bobrovsky. Well deserved.

The Caps are once again active after taking a much needed break.

Teams looking to add NHL talent are welcomed to contact me as I currently have a surplus.

I also have MTL's 4th round pick this season which I am very open to moving to teams that are looking to add draft picks.
