I have give him a bigger chance of being on the big club next year than most, either from the starting roster or an injury call up that sticks.  I know the intent is for it to be a development year for him, but there are factors that could leave a spot open for him on the Canucks.

    1.  We have cap issues and he is a cheap player.  Through a variety of means we will be dropping some More expensive players and depth before next season just for cap compliance.  Are we likely to find a player who can provide more value in a roster spot for $800k?

    2.  His style of play is well suited to the NHL.  There are no indications at all that he needs to learn the lessons of being defensively aware or giving consistent effort that guys like Goldobin and Virtanen did.  Imagine Tyler Motte’s energy, edge, and motor with the skills of Goldobin and that is what Hoglander is already.  Hoglander is short, but stocky at around 190lbs and probably more by training camp.

    3.  Ferland is going to have a pencilled in spot on the bottom 6 LW... with either him or Roussel on the 3rd line.  There is at least an even money chance that Ferland doesn’t make it out of pre-season before being put on LTIR.  That leaves a hole and not a lot of options.

    4.  An an injury to Miller or Pearson leaves a need for someone who can play a skill offensive game.  Would we have anyone better on the farm to call up than Hoglander (assuming he goes to Utica).

    5.  We have Podkolzin who is almost certainly going to be in the lineup the year after, Benning has outright said the plan is for him to come right to the NHL. It would likely on the 3rd line where Hoglander would also be.  Having Hoglander with a year of experience seems like a good idea rather than putting two rookies into a line at the same time.

    6.  Maybe he is just good enough to best out other guys at camp.  I don’t dismiss the idea that he could push Pearson down to the 3rd line purely on merit.

I like that kind of talk...!

Podz and Hogs is going to be a thing....

  2. If we were to trade Oli this year...I guaranty he will come back to bite us in the arse...Oli hasn't had a fully healthy season since junior and the injuries he has had to deal with have hurt his mobility...I think he only needs a good year of being healthy and working on his flexibility to get back on track and another year to be the top 4 guy we drafted....and maybe one more year to be a legit top 2...at the tender age of 24 or 25...which is when most D. men actually mature into a useful player.

I expect a useful player at the very least.

So, is Zack a pro-typical 3rd line center? Big, fast, aggressive, offensive, with Defensive capabilities

I am just wondering if he doesn't really fill in the role better than Adam Gaudette?

I think it is too early to say, but it begs the question

As a winger he can  use his speed and size to get in more hits on the opposing D. and if he fights we are not down a center for 5 or 7 minutes (instigating)....

I don't think he is that great at dishing the puck...his passes are fine if he has a bit of time to get them through but he is no EP or even BH...

I’d say he’s faster than most college players.

The skating thing is a bit of an odd take, but I’ve seen it popping up a fair amount lately. As far as I can track things, only JD Burke has really said that Michaelis is a poor skater. Pronman said he wasn’t sure if Michaelis was truly an NHL quality skater. Malloy said that Michaelis was a very good skater. And Benning and the Canucks cite this kid’s skating as one of his main strengths

From what I’ve seen, he’s plenty quick for the college game, showing good jump and acceleration, and easily achieving separation in footraces. I think it’s fair to say that there’s room for improvement, but that goes for everyone. As for his skating being a weakness, I don’t really see that issue in my viewings of this player.

Time will tell how well he matches up against pro level competition, but I don’t really think of Michaelis as a guy who we should expect to really struggle because of his skating.

EDIT: One last thing. Picked up this tidbit from Mayor’s Manor (LA Kings blog):

“From what we’ve gathered, Michaelis is the Kings No. 1 target. They were interested at this time last season before he decided to return for his senior season – and their interest remains high.”

    https://mayorsmanor.com/2020/03/if-the-la-kings-dip-into-2020-college-free-agent-market/

Nice to see us steal the Kings’ #1 college free agency target out from under them, especially after us trading Madden.

Also have read that quite a number of other teams were also very interested in Michaelis. Looks like a bit of a coup for Vancouver, given the level of interest from around the league.

Thanks for the rundown...and now it sounds like he should be ready to go within a season or so...given his age and skills...maybe he can turn Goldie into the sniper we were hoping for and they can come up together to join Tryamkin on what could become a top 4 D corp in that same time frame.

At the very least he gives us some skill depth at center and left wing and effectively replaces Madden on the depth chart.

It was a joke. But he has just as much chance of digressing as he does progressing.

Bad joke...and disagree ....he only digresses if the injuries don't heal up properly....

Could show up next year as a echl defenseman too...

Not a chance...he is either a whole healthy player or he heads back to Sweden for a full years rehab....no way he gets demoted, he was still one of the most used D. in Utica when was healthy enough to play.

    Here's THN view

    The top ten fallers list

    at #7

    7. OLLI JUOLEVI, D, VANCOUVER CANUCKS (-35)
    Last year: 66th
This year: not ranked in top 100.

Juolevi actually ranked sixth on this list last year, when he’d tumbled from 21st to 66th, and now he’s dropped right out of the top 100, which is disheartening to say the least given the Canucks used 2016’s fifth-overall pick on him. This season, the news isn’t all bad, however. Despite the slide in the ranks, he’s finally been relatively healthy, shaking off a bout of hip soreness and getting 45 games in with AHL Utica, during which he’s been used in all situations. So while the ranking suggests he’s slipping, Juolevi has actually experienced a positive year developmentally simply by staying on the ice and getting his reps in an important role. He turns 22 in May. Plenty of great NHL defensemen have debuted older than that. So we may see Juolevi get there at some point.

....and the bolded is what we should take from that...if the injuries are behind him and he uses the off time to core strengthen and increase his flexibility ( which is worst trait right now...due to those injuries) he could show up next year as bonafide top 4 D.

    Just watch....!

I think he's on the Canucks next year. We'll see if I'm right, but I think the Canucks feel that he's developed enough to make the jump now.

I think you're right...all he needs is time to work on his range of motion for all his injured parts...to get them limber enough to make tighter faster turns...his mobility is the only thing holding him back right now and if he puts in the work ...a few months should show massive improvement...if he does the work....it's up to him now.

I'd say Dahlin has the better chance to be a Lidstrom. His ceiling is the highest among those four. No slack on the others either. All are top notch D.

His ceiling was the highest....after watching them both this year i think that title belongs to Hughes...he gets better every game, scores a point every game since Fall sometime

(pretty much didn't check)...and he does it with poise and grace.

  11. I would rather have Bailey in for Erikkson..

While Louie played a decent game yesterday he still caused a penalty by not getting the puck out, he had plenty of time to send Miller in on a breakaway on another play and instead sent an area pass way to far ahead of Miller...it would have been a clear break,

MacEwen and/or Bailey should be in for Luoie on a full time basis and the other should come in for Roussel every 2nd or 3rd game to give him a bit of a break without downgrading the team....at all....

  12. I know Greener probably won't try it...at least for the first year or 2 but I want to see Rathbone play with Hughes...and quarterback the 2nd PP.

I know they are small but if you have the puck all the time...it doesn't matter how big you are...those 2 together with EP should provide some on ice weeping by the opposition....especially on there way to and from the penalty box...shouldn't need to sit there long...

Boston was playing their third game in four nights.

Golden Knights are doing well right now and just traded for a goaltender which seemed to be their weak link.

Dallas and Colorado are also better than us if recent games are an indication. Coyotes are going to get Kuemper (their #1 goalie) back soon.

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, we play 3 games in four nights, 4 times with the remaining schedule. This includes 4 back to back games.

That is the part that makes it tough as we won't be able to use Demko for all those games.

My point is the schedule isn't as easy as your making it out to be.

Louis will have to play at least one of those 3 in 4 night games...but Marky might be back in 3 weeks...not sure how that jibes with the remaining 3 in 4's but that is well before the end of the season at least.

edit; just checked and Marky will be back for the last 2 back to back's and it will be right about 3 weeks in for the 3rd back to back on Marck 12th and 13th...

You are willing to give Stecher over 3 million per season? What he can be and what he actually is are two totally different things. I don’t want to rip on the guy, but his play has all of the sudden been inflated by a stellar showing last night. Fact remains he has been pretty average all season long and no more over paying for players who are average. We have too many of those.

Fact remains he has been one of our top 4 D all season...get your facts straight....
