To put it in context of the present market for buyers and moving out cap....

(and to be clear, Gostisbehere aint close to LE's level of underperforming dump)....

    To Philly

    Ellis

    Ristolainen

    Out

    Phillipe Myers

    Nolan Patrick

    Robert Hagg

Yeah and that’s stupid too. Why compare to stupidity? Bar is on the floor.

OEL is a legit #1 dman.

Garland, on a contender is a solid 3rd line type.  Would love great with Dickinson and Pearson or Mackewan and maybe give us a legit 3rd line similar to what Tampa had.

You have this totally wrong. Garland is a very good top six forward on any competitive team.

OEL got killed playing against other team’s bottom sixes. He’s a #5D

On what planet is OEL a bottom pairing Dman?

He literally played the 5th most difficult competition among Coyotes defenders. If four players play more difficult minutes, that would make you a bottom pairing defenseman.

He was third in TOI/G at ES among coyotes D. Racking up minutes against other team’s bottom sixes.

    yawn.

I can tell you’re in one of those moods where you can’t make a competent argument so you’re just making tiny posts like this for upvotes.

    Happens pretty often.

If one day you can explain why adding a 30 year old D who plays bottom pairing level QOC and bleeds goals against while being soft and slow and has 6 years left at #1D money is a win to us, feel free to tag me pal. Would love to read it.

    So to reiterate

    Benning

    • Shed some immediate cap space to re-sign an important player
    • Shed 3 roster spots to ensure out kids get to play
    • Managed to get that retention keeping OEL at $7 million a year
    • Might have just found a way to retain Edler with this trade at a discount

    And for the detractors

    • Benning gave up a top flight pick and if Clarke, MacTavish or Eklund is there it will look very very bad
    • Saddled the team with a potential $7 million anchor if OEL is not rejuvinated and wasn't just mailing it in to leave Arizona
    • Gave up yet ANOTHER 2nd round pick
    • Might have little to no ammo to make any more viable trades to recoup picks this year
    • Might have just signed off on the trade that gets him fired in the next 2 seasons or less

So there.  Try to look at both the positives and negatives people.

You don’t have to trade players to free up roster spots. They could have sent them down and the roster spots are there.

The only reason it would “block” players is because the organization doesn’t like the optics of big money in the minors.

How old was Loui when he was signed?

Loui was coming off a good year where he played against the opponent’s top players every night and scored 30 goals too.

OEL is coming off a season where he played against opponent’s bottom sixes every night and looked soft/slow.

Hes been rotting in the desert. I'll reserve judgement till I see him in a Canucks uniform. Anyone would be struggling within that tire fire of a franchise.

Honestly, outside of analytics.. how many Coyotes games have you tuned into where their not playing the Canucks?

The canucks have been a worse defensive team than the coyotes the past few years.

  8. The interesting thing is I called OEL the second worst contract in the NHL a few weeks ago on this board and was happy that we missed out on that mistake.

Then we ended up acquiring it.

    @IBatch@aGENT

I KNOW you guys weren’t fans of OEL a few weeks ago.

Pods, Hogs, Woo, Lockwood, Rathbone, Di Pietro, Gadjovich, McDougnah etc. Yup, cupboard is bare.

There's no question right now that with a lot of graduating prospects to the NHL (Rathbone/Hoglander are NHL players, Podkolzin will be soon) that we are low on futures. I think Woo and DiPietro will see NHL time next year. I think there's a good chance that they use DiPietro as a backup next season and that Woo developed well enough last season that he deserves to be one of the first callups on the backend. I don't think Gadjovich can skate anywhere close to an NHL level.

The naming names thing is cool but you have to be careful because you end up doing this ->

It's also relative. If we were to do the naming names thing, you could do that for any team.

If you summed the cumulative value of the sabres top ten assets vs the canucks top ten assets, it'd probably be similar. So again, context is key and you have to understand the value relative to what other teams have.

  10. Gaffar is basically just a mouthpiece for the organization and only reports things that are absolutely true. Whether he actually ends up dealt or stays doesn’t disregard the validity to it.

Larsson would be a good get - that’s a good suggestion.

Trading Schmidt instead of Myers is a huge mistake unless you only care about goals, height, and handedness. Schmidt is a better hockey player and is one season removed from being one of the best defensemen on a WCF team.

As @Alflives mentioned, Edmonton does make sense with James Neal going back. I've heard that Edmonton wants to move Neal this offseason. Also Klefbom might be out longer than thought, may not be back until well into next season. That leaves Nurse and Russell on that LD side. Holland wants a veteran LD as well. Neal for Keith makes sense. Seattle make sense if they get a sweetener they like. Calgary I don't see it unless it's Lucic for Keith and Calgary thinks Keith may offer more than Lucic.

Vancouver makes zero sense nor do I see a fit for Keith here.

Neal for Keith is actually a really good trade. Edmonton doesn't need any more forwards for that first PP unit but probably need to replace Barrie's pp role.

Neal and Keith are both some of the worst ES players in the league. Believable

When I first heard that Jones was available, I looked online for information on the guy. CanucksArmy wrote a solid article on Jones.

Why the Vancouver Canucks should absolutely not trade for Seth Jones (canucksarmy.com)

I used to find their stuff super biased, but once J.D. Burke left, they vastly improved. Solid article.

i don't think it's just that JD left - and I don't think JD has a lot of inherit bias either. like I know that this past week while there was an insane portion of the fanbase going off about missing on Caufield, JD was defending the process/decision making behind taking Podkolzin.

I think what's happened is that every year, analytics are becoming easier to interpret and relate to what we see on the ice. It's not just basic corsi stats. I'd say maybe since ~2018, CA stuff has been a lot better but I usually only read Dayal stuff for analytics stuff still.

And when Werenski was paired with, say, David Savard, his possession metrics maintained, while Jones' took a significant hit when he was without Werenski. Jones still is a talented player, but not the ideal partner for Quinn Hughes, at least in this poster's humble opinion.

yes. that's where i totally agree with you.

there's way better options than jones for the reasons you outlined

  14. There are other analytics past just corsi. Some of the micro tracking stuff or whatever like the rush offense creation stuff is interesting. It’s the best way to score.

I have no question that you can build teams that don’t play dominate possession. Montreal’s team is built upon the low down cycle and possession.

There is no one size fits all. It isn’t solely about size, skill, possession, speed, whatever.

It is just about how well you can put together talent that compliments each other and fits within a coaches structure. The way you manage cap allows you to make better decisions for the above.
