  1. I'd get a top-fledge center(Spezza or Stastny would be ideal), move Kesler to the wing and have those guys as our primary offence for the next few years. Trade the Sedins in the offseason to round out D, picks and most importantly secondary scoring. Let the team play some mediocre hockey for a few years and than watch them take off Horvat and Kassian leading the way.

  2. Trading young players would absolutely destroy this team.

We need to deal in roster players and right now there aren't many players to move. The value of Edler, Burrows and Bieksa has absolutely tanked, we needed to get good value for those guys in the offseason. Dreger reported that there was a lot of interest in Edler and Burrows, with some intermittent interest from Eastern Conference teams in Bieksa. Mike Gillis should've kept Keith Ballard and thrown him out there with Chris Tanev.

I don't think Gillis is in over his head, I think he believes that we're still a playoff team, that we can squeak in, get bounced in the 1st round and reload in the offseason Detroit style. There's no need to sacrifice young talent for older roster players when we can just wait to spend our cap space on those same players in the offseason.

Either we win the cup next season or we become a playoff bubble team until young players start to take over the offence.

  3. A great article on Kassian from Cam Charron (stats nerd).

The article talks about Kassians usage under Torts. Personally, it makes ZERO sense to me. A player like Kassian starting virtually every shift in his own zone, playing on the 3rd line? No thanks. He's a way better player than that, his underlying #'s support that. Also extra confusing is Torts refusal to use Kass with twins - the WOWYs (with or without you stats) indicate he's their 2nd best match. Yet he hasn't seen a minute there. So I put blame on the coaching staff. Kass is a top 6 guy now, not next yr or in 2 months.

It makes perfect sense to me personally. He's trying to teach Kassian how to push play from his own zone into the offensive zone as quickly as possible. So far, I think Torts has done a great job of doing this. Mark my words, Zack Kassian will have a breakout season on the second line next year when he starts to ease into more offensive zone starts.

  4. Kane would make our future much better.

A potential Patrice Bergeron-like centre is way more of an impact player than a potential Jarome Iginla-like player who might play like him on the ice but has exhibited a serious lack of judgement off the ice on many occasions.

We're talking about a potential heir-apparent for when the Sedins retire, we're not talking about some guy that might pan out. The competitiveness, the polish and the discipline of the player all show us that he's bound be a very prolific offensive player in his future. There would have to be a complete shift in his development trajectory for us to give up on him.

He'll finish off the year in the OHL, work his ass off in the summer, come to training camp and try out for a spot with the team. He might even get to play a couple games, but at the end of the day I think he'll head back to the OHL. He'll wrap up another season there and then head to another summer of intense training. After that we'll have the option of sending him to the AHL. My guess is that he'll alternate between the NHL and the AHL during that season, when he's up hear he'll be getting the toughest minutes.

After that(3 years from now), I think he'll have enough polish to get thrown onto the 2C spot in his first season of NHL hockey.

  5. Organized right wing media in Austin? Are you serious? Ever been to Sixth Street? UT? Austin is the most hip - liberal and progressive BC type of city in the entire state. Keep Austin weird is a motto. Sounds like you may have made some generalizations without knowing where you were talking about.

Yes, I'm aware Austin is a historically Democratic-voting Liberal city but it is located in the State of Texas. Texas has voted Republican overwhelmingly since the US Political realignment. The Republican Party in the US is an extremely disciplined political machine it is one of the most ruthless political institutions in modern history. But even the National Republican Party has to make concessions in order to appease Northern Voters. Down in Texas, they don't have to pander to any centrist base. They can do and say anything they feel like. Google Governor Rick Perry, there's probably a google article for every stupid thing he's said. Even though Austin itself is a Liberal city, it's located in probably one of the most right-wing states in the nation.

  6. Honestly, the call sounded like it came from a paid-shill of the well-organized right-wing media in Texas. I can't see why someone benefiting from welfare benefits would arrogantly boast about being on welfare over the radio. That doesn't seem like a very wise move if you want the checks to keep coming in. Also, most of the details she provided were vague. If she was really interested in boasting, she would've provided more details about herself. She didn't. I'm not saying I know definitively that the call was a political stunt, I'm just saying that it's a tad suspicious.
